The first two were earned and well-deserved. The ones about FSU are more jinx and bulletin board material than not. That's a great way to get walloped by hubris. I hope the Cal players and coaches don't overlook FSU like the fans who made those memes.

Keep in mind, Cal's not really played any really good teams. Yet, Cal has struggled in the first half of all three games! Also, Cal's run defense hasn't really been great. When Davis ran the ball, Cal's defense made Larison look like a Heisman candidate. If FSU's team gets off to a good start, it can afford to run the ball at will and Cal will not be able to stop the run.

Cal fans are getting over their skis here. I don't expect the Noles to roll over for Cal any more than I expected Cal to roll over for Auburn. It'll be a tough game and the Noles will come out looking to put a beat down on our Bears. They don't want to be embarrassed by the new ACC member in their first meeting, especially not at their home. They sure as heck don't want to continue their losing streak. They'll see this as the perfect opportunity to right the ship.

Cal needs to be prepared for this and be ready to weather the storm. If the coaches and players think like NYCGoBears, then I would bet the house on FSU.

You must be fun at parties.

I am, actually.

I've just also seen Cal faceplant after having a little success. Again. And Again. And again. It's something I would prefer that the team didn't do this time. I want to see them win and surprise us all by having a double digit win season (exclusive of bowl games).

Maybe that's just me. Maybe some of you are okay with seeing Cal getting a little publicity and the losing. I'm not. If I had my druthers, Cal would win it all. We can celebrate after that, not before.

I'm not sure you're quite understanding what's happening here. What cal twitter is doing is not overconfidence or hubris. It's mostly self deprecating and self aware. And there's an understanding amongst everyone that times likes these don't come along that often, so we should enjoy it to the limit when things are going well.

Cal Twitter isn't the concern. Sure, it's arguable that guys like NYCGOBEARS are jinxing the team by already posting about having beaten FSU. But that's not my main concern. I'm worried the Cal players might buy into the posts and think they'll just walk over FSU. That's a recipe for disaster. FSU has trap game written all over it!

Cal isn't so good that it can play suboptimal football and still beat FSU. Neither is FSU so bad that it'll beat itself at home against a newly resurgent Cal squad. The Cal players will need to be absolutely focused on doing their jobs. All the Cal Twitter nonsense is a distraction. At best, the team will ignore it. If they don't, then the loss will be shared by them and the Cal tweeters.

Again, I've seen this play out many times before. Cal starts doing well and getting some positive publicity, the players start to believe they're better than they are, then Cal comes crashing down. We saw this under Tedford, and even under Sonny (remember "Keep calm and drop 50?"). I really don't want to see history repeat itself here. Cal is on the verge of something special. Let's not ruin that over something as inane as Twitter memes.
Nah bruh, it ain't that deep - this isn't 2007 or 2015. Not just for Cal football but also in Internet culture terms.

Memery & shYtposting are a regular thing in Gen Z/alpha circles, and I'm pretty sure the players (starting with team leaders like Nando, Jaydn, Nohl, Teddye) understand that these memes aren't serious. If anything, it probably helps them lighten the mood AND focus on the task at hand - knowing that Cal students/alums/fans got their back.

And to echo a comment I made in another forum [re: Cal Twitter generally]: Young alums DO care & genuinely love Cal alot; many of us just do so in our own way often with self-aware/self-deprecating humor - aka 'Cal Twitter hits different'.

Self deprecation is one thing, proclaiming Cal as the victors over FSU before a single down has been played is another. There's a world of difference between the two. Unfortunately, there are too many of the latter swarming Cal Twitter and not many of the former.

lol I don't think anyone with half a brain is overlooking FSU. If this were wake forest and they were 0-3, maybe. But there's not a single player going into this game thinking they can just show up and beat FSU at their own place. Thinking thats even a possibility is crazy. Cal may well lose. But it'll be because FSU was better that day. Not cause of overconfidence. You're letting your cal paranoia get the best of you.

Unburden yourself. We are not going back.

I hope you're right. But I can see Cal getting curb stomped in Tallahassee because the players bought into the glowing tweets about the team. They're young kids, they really don't know better. Collegiate level success is still pretty new to most of them, let alone the adulation that comes with it. Expecting them to put it out if their heads is unrealistic.

So I guess we should all prefer that they play scared and shYt the bed 14-42 (3-42, etc) like past teams did vs USC or Oregon under Tedford multiple times?

Can't have it both ways bro - like ducky23 said, unburden yourself. It's a new season, with a new team, in a new conference. And like I alluded to above - win or lose - the players get it.

Ok this will be my last post about this cause I'm not sure anything is getting thru.

The tweets are overly cocky cause that's PART OF THE JOKE! We all know Cal's history of sucking. So acting like we're the **** is the self deprecating humour.

The fact that all this has to be explained really takes the fun out of it.

That's a false dichotomy, bruh. No one ever said those were the only two options. Cal can beat FSU, but to do so, they have to play focused and disciplined ball. They can't overlook the Noles nor believe they're better than they really are. Cal is still a flawed team that is just now learning to win. The culture is changing but it needs to be nurtured. Getting stomped by FSU will ****** that growth.

Getting over their skis and buying into the positive buzz about them is a recipe for disaster. They're all still kids; it's completely normal for them to let the recent adulation go to their heads. Again, that's a sure way to guarantee a loss. Unfortunately, the Cal Twitterverse doesn't quite understand that and are adding fuel to their hubris.

Yeah, something tells me it's not being taken as a joke by everyone, whether at Cal or in Tallahassee. The latter is probably treating it as bulletin board material and the former is letting it create an undeserved sense of invincibility.

We saw this under Tedford, and even under Sonny (remember "Keep calm and drop 50?"). I really don't want to see history repeat itself here. Cal is on the verge of something special. Let's not ruin that over something as inane as Twitter memes.

lol I don't think anyone with half a brain is overlooking FSU.

Dude, lighten up. This is supposed to be fun: it is college football. Also, you're implying something uncharitable towards our student athletes. You yourself were a kid and you probably were smart, what makes you think our student athletes aren't? Hell, I saved some of the papers I wrote and exams I took at Cal and have re-read some of my work; I can't believe I was once that intelligent!

I remember having Tosh Lupoi in one of my classes. Guy seemed to be grounded and was not some dumb jock. Unfortunately, we later learned that he lacked a moral compass. Most of the Cal athletes I had the pleasure of meeting actually had a head on their shoulders. You're right, they are young kids, but they're not morons.

Most of the Cal athletes I had the pleasure of meeting actually had a head on their shoulders. You're right, they are young kids, but they're not morons.

It's not a matter of them being morons. Far from it. I have never once denigrated any Cal student-athlete. Rather, I appreciate them all. I acknowledge how much hard work and effort they put into representing Cal. But I'm also realistic about their shortcomings and limitations.

The fact of the matter is, the Cal team is comprised of kids. Kids are susceptible to allowing headlines (or in the case tweets) to get to their heads. It's not a matter of intelligence but maturity and experience. By default, kids tend to lack both. There may be some kids who have the maturity and experience to ignore the sudden adulation, but to expect the entire team (or even just the starting units) all to do so is unrealistic. If the team had a history of success, at least the older players could help guide the younger ones and show them how to tune out the praise. Since that's not the case, the kids are all in uncharted territory.

I sure as heck hope I'm wrong. I hope you're all right and that I'm worried for nothing. But I've seen this play out too many times. Cal gets a little on-field success, the praise starts to come in, the players believing the headlines and press, then the team falls in its face. I'd very much like to see this Cal team not go down the same path.

Or maybe they're not funny. Do you really think giving FSU bulletin board material is a good idea? Can you honestly tell me that an asinine "joke" is worth giving FSU extra motivation to crush Cal on Saturday?

I can honestly tell you nobody in the FSU locker room cares about Cal tweets. They're 0-3 and being ridiculed by the national media and their entire fan base. Some tweet about the woke agenda coming for them isn't impacting their motivation.

I think letting the rest of the college football world know that a Cal fanbase exists and is engaged is a great thing. And I think that if pride, NIL or NFL aspirations aren't sufficiently motivating for the FSU players, that an onslaught of shytpost AI memes won't move the needle.

It's not the posts about the woke agenda that will add fuel to their fire, it's the tweets about Cal whooping their arses. Yeah, their fan base has turned on them, FSU players are going to want to take that anger out on Cal. Especially as Cal tweeters keep ridiculing the Noles. Or do you think FSU players won't use that as extra motivation?

There are different types of motivation. One of them is anger at being belittled or snubbed. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are prime examples of athletes who were motivated by this. While FSU players may not be all-time greats, I'd be shocked if they didn't also take the insults from Cal tweeters personally and use them as motivation for meting out punishment on the Cal team on Saturday, as a result.

While I fully admit I may be wrong (heck, I hope I'm wrong!), I suspect the FSU game has now turned into a trap game for Cal specifically because FSU has become the butt of college football media while Cal had become its latest darling. FSU will be extra motivated to prove everyone wrong and to beat the tar out of the Cal squad. Cal may end up going into the game taking the Noles too lightly, leading them to fall into an early hole from which they won't be able to emerge.

If this happens, it may well kill whatever momentum Cal's been building in changing its football culture. Instead, Cal will return to its culture of mediocrity, where winning just enough games to make it to a minor bowl is considered a good year. For those concerned about ratings and the executives in Manhattan, I'm sure you know exactly what that means.

The tweets are overly cocky cause that's PART OF THE JOKE! We all know Cal's history of sucking. So acting like we're the **** is the self deprecating humour.

The fact that all this has to be explained really takes the fun out of it.

A little off topic, but I also think the mini-embrace of Cal twitter by the extremely online CFB twitter is a mini-pressure release valve.

College Football fandom has been a mono-culture.

The rise of wacky extremely online Cal burners who take the Berkeley stereotypes thrown at them by their peers, exaggerate them, and throw them back at the CFB online world is a great media turnaround story.

If I could so far, I'd suggest it's a way for coastal city folk to 'reclaim' their college football heritage the CFB mono-culture.

In a way 'owning' and 'perverting' the stereotypes his acting as a mini-charm offensive and helps to remove the 'elitist' or 'apathetic' label that some has placed on Cal fandom.

At least it appears that way from this frenetic month online.

Shades of the game at Purdue in the early Gilby era (92), where their players got the impression that they were dissed as midwestern hicks, and went on to destroy a ranked Cal team.

At the very least, this twitter movement is a double-edged sword.

I think you are overestimating the impact of random tweets from Cal fans. FSU has plenty of motivation. Nobody cares about the tweets.

Broader note, who the **** cares if FSU is extra motivated? We're the flagship school in the largest state in the country. We are a premier academic institution in one of the most beautiful areas in America. We need to stop being scared and embrace our rightful place as the apex predator in college sports. I want FSU as motivated as possible - and then I want us to kick their ass so bad they're still talking about it a decade from now.

To the contrary - 01Bear is the only poster approaching these pernicious "jokes" with the earnest concern that they deserve. Each dense paragraph of prose submitted in defense of his thesis further convinces me that his worry over this supposed "humor" is apt. Apt!

But I say leave this inconsequential message board and put your words to use in service of the ultimate goal -- molding the words and behavior of a disparate group of sh*tposting fans, kids, and randoms into your preferred tone of caution and sobriety, lest they further shape the outcome of a future football game played by a separate group of high-level college athletes. Onward to twitter, godspeed!
