I highly doubt UNLV offered a patriot league QB 100k to rent for 1 season.

That seems cheap to me.

According to cbs sports, going rates for QB's are $500,000 and up for power 4 conferences. Also the kid's dad ( grain of salt) said he had multiple offers at more $ from major conferences.

UNLV is a multi-decade losing program. They made only $1 million last year, the first time they've came in the black in many years. This is not a team that has NIL money just flowing. The Casino's are VERY limited in how much they can give to UNLV, so the main source of revenue is very tightly controlled. UNLV's other football team members came out and said they got the same deal the QB was getting which is a scholarship and $3k/month. I'm going to come out and say it, I think the kid and his parent's are liars. The first thing they were talking about after his 2 wins were how his value rose up lol. They tried to extort the head coach and when that didn't work he tried to use the media. The only problem is, there are no other schools looking to throw money at a QB with a under 50% completion rate.
His 3 games:
-Houston he had 46.2% 71yds 2TD 1int 59yds rushing
-Vs Utah Tech (a school that moved to the FCS level in 2020) he had 47.1% 161yds 3tds 70 rushing 1TD
-Vs Kansas he had 38.9% 86yds 1TD 124yds rushing

Everything I've read is UNLV's defense basically won them every game except vs Utah Tech who is basically Junior College level football. Combined all the teams they have played are 2-10.

I don't know enough to comment on the family's veracity or in his football ability. But I don't believe UNLV can't afford $100, 000.

According to media reports UNLV is receiving $20 million to remain in the Mountsin West. See below

Think about it, the PAC tries to lure them and they leverage it into $20 million, while their QB walks for $100,000. So they are doing the same thing thing this kid is doing- trying to leverage power into money

"That gave the other seven schools a chance to reconsider, but ultimately it appears Nevarez will be able to keep the Mountain West alive with the help of about $100 million dollars in exit fees expected to come the conference's way from the departing schools.

The Pac-12 is suing the Mountain West over another $55 million in poaching penalties that were part of a football scheduling agreement Oregon State and Washington State entered into with the conference for this season.

The person said UNLV and Air Force have been offered signing bonuses of more than $20 million to stay put, and that was more than other conferences were willing to spend to lure them awa

Guys, you gotta understand something, and yes I know it is has been said many times before, but right now the NIL payments don't come from the college or the athletic department. That could change, if the House cases settles, but that now seems unlikely given the Judge's refusal to approve the settlement (a topic for another thread). The agent at least was smart enough to ask the collective and was told to pound sand, which gets us into the land of a coach can't make an offer under the current NCAA structure. That structure may be illegal once Justice Kavanaugh gets to weight in, but right now that is the rules

But stop with if the schools or the athletic department have all this money, why can't they pay more money crap. Furd for example, is rolling in money, but its collective is not, and that is reflected in still eligible Furd players jumping into the Portal Unless you have specific knowledge about the UNLV's collective finances, you are whistling into the wind with this line of reasoning. I get where a SEC schools collective has so much money they could write the check easily for a deserving QB. UNLV is not even remotely close to a SEC school or more relevant, the UNLV collective is not within light years of a SEC collective.

One of my sons goes to Linfield College in McMinnville.... longest winning streak in college football at any level... 67 years or something. Maybe I just need to start following D3 football...

67 years without a loss?
You'd think they'd try their hand at D2.
Linfield says it's had 67 straight winning seasons. The story below says they have gone 540-120-10 over the 67 year period. Very impressive!

To try and make everyone feel a bit better, one of the things I'm really enjoying about this season is the whole story with Fernando Mendoza. Here's a kid who was going to play at Yale, which doesn't have athletic scholarships, and decided to take a chance as a preferred walk on, initially, to get a great education and play P4 football besides. His ability shone through, and he's now the starter, with a chance to lead this team to its best season in years. I'm happy the collective is able to give him some financial help, because his story is everything a lot of the current landscape is not.

Amen. Fernando's story is one of the few truly feel good elements of the past couple of seasons. I'm proud that my alma mater has played a significant role.
