Im so bad at this, I genuinely thought we had the talent to compete for ACC title. I was half right. We do have the athletic talent, we just don't have the coaching talent.

This is Cal after all, so Cal will probably run the table and Knowlton will hand Wilcox a lifetime extension. lolol

I have no faith that we will beat Furd. They are 5-1 Syracuse's only loss. Meanwhile our best win is 2-5 Auburn
My Beavers are a mess right now. I hear we get a couple defensive players back for the Cal game, so that helps, but still.....if Cal shows up at all, you will get your feel better game against our porous defense. I'll be there to support, but fully expecting a Bears win...maybe even big.

Good call.

Is the program going to rebuild next year or will the Beavs have a hard time getting back to their previous P12 strength?

I think we can get to 8-4, we should be favored in every game except SMU and by then with 4 straight wins the team will have learned to close the deal.

We should finish 8-4 or 7-5, which is kind of where many of us predicted we would.

Given our easy schedule this year we predicted 8-4 and 7-5 taking Wilcox into account. We should be 8-0 and ranked right now, but 4-4 was a reasonable prediction for this point given Wilcox. Wilcox meeting lowered expectations should not be to his credit.

We are alone in last place in the ACC. We could easily be in first. That is a huge missed opportunity. We could be selling out Memorial. There would be huge hype around the program.

Years we entered November without a conference win: 2020 (COVID), 2013 (Dykes' disastrous first year) and 2001 (Holmoe's disastrous last year).

I do hope we turn it around, the schedule, other than SMU, and maybe Syracuse, looks favorable.

The schedule is easier than last year but tbf, Cal is probably going to play 3 of the 4 best ACC teams this season (only missing Clemson) so compared to SMU and Stanford it was a harder ride. Of course losing to FSU and NC State will always hurt a lot though because I think 5-3 conference record will be a decent reflection of Cal's talent level this year.

The schedule is FAR easier than last year based on strength of schedule rankings. I also think this team, with a great defense and Mendoza starting from day one, throwing lasers and not making turnovers is considerably better than last year's team with poor defense and offensive turnovers. All our losses so far have been due to coaching or indirectly due to pre-snap penalties (indicative of coaching, not talent).

If we had beaten Miami and Pittsburgh, as we easily could have, you would have a different view of who the top 4 teams in the ACC are (and we would be one of them). But yes, NC State and FSU were worse losses.

I firmly believe that Cal's talent level is every bit as good at Pittsburgh's or even Miami's as evidenced by the fact we could have and should have beaten them at home. Our talent level is much better than last year and this year's ACC cannot compare to last year's PAC-12.

Results haven't been good and of course fans are going to feel negative. In fact, we just pounded the Beavers 44-7 today and all I can think of is, oh, if we had only won 2-3 of those other games. So, yeah.

The poster I was responding to, IMO, has seemed to have had the most negative takes on everything, going back years. It has just been too much. To each his own, though, We all want the Bears to win and we're just here swapping opinions.

I understand where everyone is coming from (well with a few exceptions). I understand the pure pessimists and I understand the pure optimists. I want to be optimistic about the future, I really do.

Where I break with the pure optimists is sugarcoating the past, making excuses or lowering the bar (the opposite of optimism really). I think you need to look at what is working and honestly look at what is not working in order make corrections and improve in order to be better in the future. Things don't get better by circling the wagons and arguing "everything is fine" or this is "good enough."

I also will never write anyone off. Everyone, even Wilcox, can learn and improve, but they have to willing to do a self assessment and go out and get the information, mentorship, help or training to improve. If an employee is unwilling to do that, we find a lesser role for them or suggest it might be better if they find another employer.

Nando is the perfect example. He knew and said his ball security had to improve . His ball security is night and day from last year. He went to Manning Camp. He sought out Mike Pawlawski as a mentor. He said he needed to improve his accuracy on short throws and he went and did it. On the broadcast they showed him mentally running through reps. He is going out and getting all the resources he can. He combines honest self-criticism with unflagging optimism and hard work. He is a great role model for Justin Wilcox (and for all of us). He may not reach his lofty goals, but if he doesn't it won't be for lack of self-assessment, lack of effort, a negative attitude or settling for less than excellence.
