Oddsmakers don't know anything. NC State odds was -9.5, look how that turned out

On average, the oddsmakers are right, especially later in the season like now.

WF defense is bottom 5 when it comes to havoc rate. That's the primary indicator on whether cal is going to win (since our biggest weakness is Oline)

If cal offense comes out knowing they are clearly better than WF defense and we just fling it around, we win comfortably

If Wilcox believes it's an away game against a comparable team and gets into a rock fight, then I don't f'ing know.

I love it when people say they're smarter than vegas. And then right after they'll say, oh I'm against betting.

So you're against free money? Ok dude

Never underestimate Cal fans ability to treat 4-4 like 0-8.

Cal's underlying metrics are much better than their record. This makes sense, when you consider that our four losses are by a TOTAL of 9 points. Vegas has probably been looking at that.

Also no one wants to bet on Wake Forest, so you need a big number to entice some action on that side.

Or 0-4 in conference like 0-4 in conference. If we win it will be our first win in our new conference and Wilcox's first conference win outside the state of California in 5 years. Losses to good and bad teams in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, Utah and now Florida , Pennsylvania….

I try to never expect wins. I always expect heart breaking losses. This is a well-honed defense mechanism and it generally helps me be depressed rather than suicidal when we find ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I've watched a few Wake games. They aren't a bad team (frame of reference I thought that both Oregon State and San Diego State were bad football teams before we played them and nothing I saw at Memorial changed my mind). With all that said, Wake is about to see the best version of the Cal football team we've put on the field in 2024 and that includes our home opener. We should finally have virtually all of the talent we assembled this offseason (Kyion Grayes being a notable exception) playing. If THIS version of Cal can not handily beat Wake Forest there is something fundamentally and profoundly wrong with our coaching, game prep and planning. I pray that's not the case.

I rarely make pre-game predictions but I think we win this one handily. We shall see.

Moreover, there are indications from the OSU game that Wilcox/Bloesch have figured out that we need to have Mendoza pass early and keep passing and scoring even with a lead until the clock expires.

Still, Wilcox has not won a conference road game that is not in front of a big Cal crowd at Stanford against weak Stanford teams or a big Cal crowd in LA against a weak LA team in 5 years.

sure we will likely come out of the gate with TDs but can we hold on through 4 quarters? Other coaches make adjustments at halftime while Wilcox and co. keep trying the same thing even after the opposing team finds a solution

Yeah, in OOC games he had Auburn this year, North Texas last year and 5 years ago he beat Southern Miss on the road. The point is he lost a lot of out of state conference road games since 2019, including to otherwise winless teams (Arizona, Colorado and now FSU). It is one reason to be uncertain about Wilcox beating Wake despite the fact we are the better team.

Ole Miss, not Southern Miss (Ole Miss is much better). Also won at Washington that year. And UNC in his first year.

But at this point we are a far cry from the 2019 results (with Garbers).

Yes, what I meant, though Ole Miss at 4-8 was not good that year.

Cal had the #112 scoring offense in 2019, though Garbers, in Baldwin's offense was relatively effective, Baldwin finally got fired after the season. Wonder if Bloesch gets three years to try to learn on the job too?

I think we know the answer to this regardless of whether Cal beats Wake handily or not. The evidence suggests this staff is mediocre or worse.

IMO if not for the collective stepping up and providing a mechanism to attract and keep talent this team just might have 1 win rather than 4.

I think there is enough talent on hand to finish these last games 3-1. But they had enough talent (even with the injuries) to win at FSU, Pitt and at home vs NC State. The record under Wilcox is poor. Particularly in conference games. And even worse on the road. And awful after byes as well. Poor performances after byes seems particularly telling. Well coached teams should perform better after byes.

Wake Forest is a conference game on the road after a bye. I do think Cal is better and should win. But the history of the team under Wilcox should not be ignored.

Their slow mesh rpo offense drives d's nuts. That's because their rb is a water bug and hard to see. Their qb is someone we recruited out of hs - he's pretty good, though not fleet afoot. Otherwise, wf is ordinary.

He's not going to be fired regardless. Unless you write the check for $15M to cover his buyout.
I'm amazed that posters continue to ignore the fact that Cal cannot afford to fire him for another year or two.
