If the defense is that out of shape then you just have to gamble with blitzes because the result is no worse than what is happening now, anyway.

It is not ok for the defense to be gassed after one quarter. Not in any universe. Their effort has been garbage as a group thus far. Lazy and with no regard to fundamentals. Wilmoe did not have them prepared.
The defense can also try to stop the other team on 4th down. I did a little research and against FBS opponents, the Cal defense has done the following on 4th down:

Auburn - 0/1
SDSU - 2/4
FSU - 1/2
Miami - 3/4
Pitt - 2/2
NC State - 2/2
Oregon State - 3/5
Wake Forest - 3/3
Cuse - 2/2

Total: 18/25 for 72%
And 12/14 since the Miami game for 86%.

Not sure a zone makes sense against Cuse. They want to throw quick passes. Better to press them and give the pass rush a chance to get there.
