If JKS has the confidence that he should have as a top recruit, you've got to think that he thinks that he can do some things better than Fernando right now and beat him out NEXT year.
I keep thinking back to all of the hoopla and publicity surrounding the recruitment and signing by Texas of 5-star Arch Manning, who never saw the field (that I can remember) during his true frosh season. And if I am not mistaken, he is still there backup to Ewers. 5 stars doesn't guarantee - or even make likely - instant readiness for P4 fb for true frosh QBs.
Arch Manning has sat on purpose because Ewers is that damn good, and when given playing time Arch has played well and will have the reins next year, there is nothing wrong with sitting for a while especially if the starter is very high-caliber like Ewers and the Mannings do not want to rush him, Arch can do whatever he wants with his family's backing anyways, playing QB or otherwise
All of that is probably true. I am just trying to say - and Arch Manning is not the only example - that it is not anathema for a highly rated true frosh QB to sit as a backup for a year, to get acclimated to P4 fb as well as to become acclimated to the course work and academic workload of an elite, highly competitive academic environment like Berkeley. He won't, after all, be enrolling at Sacramento State, or Louisville...or NC State.
