It's a very small consolation after the fact but I'm glad something bad happened to him. As a matter of fact I hope all bad things always happen to Mac Brown. I hope the first bite of pizza always cuts & burns the roof of his mouth. I hope every toilet he flushes splashes up on him, I hope every beer he ever drinks is warm, I hope every lane of traffic he's ever in is always the slow lane, I hope he steps on a Lego and stubs his toe getting out of bed every morning, I hope his most annoying in-laws are always staying at his house, I hope he has a neighbor who revs a motorcycle or loudly mows their lawn at 5am every day, and I hope birds take aim and **** on him whenever he goes outside. Good riddance and unhappy trails you scamming, cheating, POS

The 2004 reunion on Saturday led to this karmic slap down.

6-5 (3-4) in the ACC and "bowl eligible" with one game (NC State) to go. Could have ended up 7-5 (4-4) in the Holliday Bowl….

OK - honest question everyone:

I'm all aboard the "hate on Mack Brown for snatching the Rose Bowl from us" train especially because I actually was attending Cal during that moment but if the situation were reversed, would we have supported our coach lobbying the public the same way Mack Brown did for Texas?

Cal fans are mad that another coach understood the dynamic while ours did not.

That's the entirety of the hate train.

That guy getting his team into the BCS isn't the problem. It's that we were too good to sell ourselves. That's why JJ sat at home for the Heisman ceremony with 2018 yards and a like 1.4ypc better than the #2 dude.

Cal fans wanted to worship Tedford and hate the BCS at the end of 2004. Brown was just the face of a system Cal didn't like and refused to participate in. Like hating someone for asking for a raise and getting it, even though I dO So mUcH mOrE!

I spend almost zero time thinking about Mack Brown... Apparently some people are still thinking about it in 2024, which is just nuts.

Not just that, but Cal fans were mad at a system being manipulated because we wanted the Rose Bowl as a Pac10 runner up. It's not like it was a real Rose Bowl. It was a chance to perpetrate like champions while not being champions, and crying that we didn't lobby for ANYTHING effectively, because someone did.

This. (^) We didn't want our coach to lobby for the Rose Bowl because it was unseemly. Well, now there is no more Rose Bowl (like there was), there is no more Pac 8-or-10-or-12, everybody pays their players and the players go wherever they want after each season.

And we're supposed to hate Mac Brown because he got some for his team while it was still there to get.

This times infinity! Tedford took a knee and it wouldn't have been a real Rose Bowl. And don't get me started on those who cling to being "co-champions" in 2006.

It would not have taken me long to get over the fact that our Rose Bowl appearance would not have been "real" in some people's eyes because we were P10 runners-up.

Like so many "norms" that have been obliterated since then, it broke the "best of Pac-10/12" vs "Best of Big 10/B1G" norm for the Rose Bowl.

Exactly.
Mack Brown lobbied for his team because he could. Some Cal fans take it personally, which is ridiculous. Tedford was simply out politicked. And Mack Brown's wife is a Cal grad. He was doing everything he could for his team. Good on him.
