If Wilcox knew he was going to get fired next year (because he heard NIL was drying up, massive loss in talent, daunting schedule) then I can see him trying to pull a Jeff Hafley and leave to reset his coaching clock and avoid a firing on his resume.

But I have a feeling Wilcox thinks he can win next year so he isn't going do what Hafley did.
My understanding from watching BC last year was the players pretty much quit on Hafley. I'm not sure if that's accurate but its what BC fans told me and given how well they performed against FSU and Missouri this season (even though they lost) its clear they are on an upward trajectory with their new coach. BC are one of the worst programs in the ACC historically, so if we can't even finish above them regularly, we are really going to be in serious trouble. Indiana is another great example. We don't even have to get to 10-11 wins every year, just often enough that the TV execs realize its worth having the Bay Area in the B1G.

should it? Should beating a G5 team in a meaningless bowl game really atone for 8 years of losing conference records?

UNLV is a pretty solid team, their only losses are to BSU and Syracuse in OT
they're a good team, but if we are going to survive realignment, are ESPN or Fox going to look at an LA Bowl win against UNLV as proof we're committed to being a serious program? At this point in the game, its playoff appearance or bust for most schools on the fringes of the P2 like us. We need to make a run at a conference title, or at least be in contention to make the CCG once in a while, the traditional bowls are largely meaningless for better or worse. Finishing with 7 wins does absolutely nothing for us in the eyes of the power brokers running the show.
My point was that it's not a guarantee we will win against the loser of the MWC championship game, who will likely be pissed that they missed the playoffs and have one final chance to prove this season. It's very likely we will end at 6-7 again despite playing in a meaningless bowl game

doubtful, does your word choice of "we" in your predictable statement that won't win the bowl game mean that you will actually be at the bowl game or something??

or does it just mean ur gonna watch the game on ur tv while posting ur usual negative **** on the gameday thread, u know just biz as usual for u??

Business as usual is being proven right time and again. From your vantage point of delusion, posting almost 400 pages on cal's monstrously terrible offensive line full of underage instagram girls, sure my posts look negative.

But for the rest of the world, it's clear that my posts are very much aligned with reality. I came into the season expecting a 6-6 result. I thought it was a disaster that we let Spav go and promoted Bloesch instead of hiring from within. I had serious doubts that our supposedly top tier transfer class would move the needle this year.

And yet your only comeback is whether I would book a cross country flight just to watch our dumpster fire of a head coach will lead us to yet another loss.

doubtful, so why weren't you at the exciting auburn game when cal wuz undefeated which virtually every cal fan in attendance thought wuz arguably the best roadie in the history of cal football?...or the cool vibe wake forest game in winston-salem?

do u also expound on rating movies, restaurants, golf courses, etc. that you've never seen in person?...compounding ur bad takes is that u got zero inside knowledge of anything...curious if u ever try to solve life problems with real solutions or do u just throw ur hands up in the air & threaten to kill urself?

let's be real here, u can't afford to buy a plane tix to the la bowl, is there literally nothing in the city of los angeles that would interest u in addition to watching a bowl game at a fun nfl venue?...honestly if ur that broke azz u probably shouldn't be wasting ur time on a sports message board, u should be thinking about how ur gonna get ur next meal or something

Nice of you always to change the subject when you are losing an argument. I have more interesting things to do than fly out just to watch a mediocre team led by a terrible head coach. My time is precious, unlike yours since you have ample time to creep on other peoples daughters and granddaughters on the internet.

Funny that you are calling me poor, I have no doubt my net worth is at least double of yours. I bet you can't even go outside because you are a registered sex offender that can't be within a mile of any school or public park for being a creepy pedophile.

I don't get all this negativity on Wilcox. The man had a chance to leave us and go to Oregon but turned them down. What makes everyone think we can do better? I was one of the earlier ones to turn on Tedford, but in hindsight, we had it pretty good with him. I just thought we needed someone else to get to the next level, but what I've learned is there is no hope that we will ever be a football powerhouse. Being mediocre and making it to a bowl game is all that we should hope for. If we expect anything more, we're setting ourselves up for disappointment.

Well - "letting Spav go" is misleading, either He would "resign" or He would have been shown the door. No point in disparaging Him here (and He definitely needed a change of scenery for his well being and good for him to shine elsewhere) but safe to say, his ability to communicate consistently and not erratically, was not missed. Totally agree on promoting Bloesch was a bad decision that hurt two key coaching positions/impact. Changes are coming shortly.

From what I've gathered by reading these boards is that Wilcox turned down the UO job because the AD wouldn't give him carte blanche in picking his assistants. It seems the UO AD had it right. Wilcox has proven to be abysmal at picking an OC. In eight years, only Spav ran a decent offense, but it looks like Wilcox ran off Spav.

As to your other point, I do believe that the Cal HC position can be a plum assignment. Cal is still a P4 team. It's located in one of the greatest metropolises in the world. The school is internationally renowned. The campus itself is absolutely gorgeous. The climate is unmatched and is ideal for football, year round. The alumni and student body have proven (in the past) to be willing to support a winning program.

If Cal has a coach who can turn around the program, he'll be loved (look at Tedford and how loved he is by the greater Cal community for his early years). He'll also get all the support he wants for his team. On top of which, he'll have access to some of the deepest alumni pockets (given that everyone loves a winner, even non-football loving alumni will be crawling out of the woodwork to be associated with the program, which leads to donations).

The question is, what coach thinks he has what it takes to turn around Cal? Cal will need someone with confidence and swag, like early Tedford.

4thGenCal, this is the first I've heard of Spav being unable to communicate consistently or otherwise having communication problems. Wasn't he essentially forced out by Wilcox? I thought the reason for the force out was that Spav refused to run a Wilcoxian offense?

Tedford, Snyder, White. Yes, only three over a very long time period but each of these head coaches were able to build strong Cal teams, recruit players and coaches, produce winning teams, produce NFL players and produce coaches who moved on to bigger, better jobs (ie. they could all mentor coaches). They were also here at Cal to stay and only left or were forced out for other reasons. I'll admit, I don't know the exact circumstances around any of them leaving. Cal can do a lot better than Wilcox at HC. I think you are too young to know this based on your board name being a more recent Cal slogan. Snyder and White were fabulous coaches. I still believe Snyder was on the verge of doing something special and we ****ed that up horribly.

The problem is the higher ups accepting mediocrity. I say it all the time, the fanbase wants a winner but the administration is content going 6-6 every year. That is a loser mentality. If they were serious about football they would hire a quality head coach and not give a mediocre coach an extension when hes proven nothing. Any program serious about winning would've fired Knowlton and Wilcox a long time ago and figure out the buyout costs later. "Well we can't buy him out so we should just keep him"... I hate that mindset some people have. That will force the program to slip further into obscurity and irrelevancy. Sorry I'm not on board for that. It's time to make a change and start winning games.

and you know that the UO story was true how? meanwhile, tedford was in emotional decline and the team went downhill. we never aspired to be a powerhouse, but having winning records and the occasional major bowl was realistic with a good coach.

Sadly, you may be right. Cal can't win with this loser mentality.
Seems like many of us realize we can do so much better while the powers that be just don't care and are satisfied with relentlessly disappointing mediocrity. Been watching Cal since the 1960s and I'm really not sure how much longer I wish to subject myself to this. With little variation it seems the plan each season is to beat three patsies, then struggle the rest of the way at 3-6, gain some toilet bowl invitation and embarrass ourselves against another lightweight 6-6 opponent. Because we are in some sort of bowl, admin then plays it up like we are a football power. This just isn't my idea of success. The school,
the fans, the players, the alumni all deserve better. The Big Game was great, but so much of this year was just a downer with unfulfilled expectations. Hard to have hope with this
sub-par coaching staff that continually disappoints. And an administration that thinks this is acceptable.

Impressed you still care and/or have any hope left! Apathy struck me several years ago. I went from planning my schedule around football and basketball games to paying passing attention here and there in my spare time. It's been much healthier.

I've told this story numerous times, but in one of my first jobs after Cal, there were two senior members of the firm who were HUGE sports fans and Cal graduates. Neither of them cared about Cal sports. During the early Tedford years I shared my excitement about the program's trajectory and tried to encourage them to support it financially (both were very successful), I can still remember the all-knowing look of pity they had on their faces. Their message was the same - this is Cal, it is not built to succeed athletically in major sports and you'll come to understand that eventually. After Wilcox, Wyking, and Fox I understand - Cal is what it is.

How quickly do you expect Lyons to move exactly? We're just now ending the first football season since he took the role and we haven't even played the bowl yet. At least give it a year before judging if he yields results.

How quickly do you expect Lyons to move exactly? We're just now ending the first football season since he took the role and we haven't even played the bowl yet. At least give it a year before judging if he yields results.
Before he became the chancellor, he already worked at Cal as the Dean of Haas. Also, from what all his fanboys have said, Lyons is a big Cal sports fan. All this means he was or should've been aware of the problems infesting the Cal athletics program. He should've had a plan in place and been ready to remove Knowlton and/or Wilcox from the first day; he did not. That alone is damning. It means either he didn't do his homework or he has no clue how to fix the problem.

Instead, he's made a bunch of the same "rah rah Go Bears" noises Tien made. His results show he's no better than Tien. Actions (and results) speak louder than words. So far, all that's come from Lyons is a deafening silence.

He'll be back as long as he wants to be. The powers that be are quite happy with this season.

And an administration that thinks this is acceptable.
time for Lyons to show what he is made of. Inaction now means he's just another one of his predecessors, despite the talk.

Uninformed post. You need to be on the premium board. There are a few people there who are more than connected at the highest level that will educate you.

Lol!

What results has Lyons achieved? Is Knowlton still the AD? Is Wilcox still the HC for the football program?

Fanboy over Lyons all you want, but until he actually achieves results, he's no better than Tien.

The same ones that defended the Knowlton hire, Mark Fox, the Knowlton extension, the Wilcox extension and swore that after USC and UCLA departed for the B1G and UW and Oregon were reportedly lobbying to get in too, told us "Carol Christ is doing more to get us into the B1G than any other PAC-10 CEO"?

Things move slowly at the University and Lyons has many stakeholders to report to.

It's reality, whether you like it or not. I see a lot of delusional fans who think we should be better than we've historically been. I'm not suggesting we don't support the team or root for losses. I just don't get the sense of entitlement that many here seem to have. What in our history suggests we should be expecting more? We had a good season. The close losses sucked, but we were competitive and didn't quit. We beat Stanford and made a bowl game. My first year at Cal was Holmoe's final year when we won one game against Rutgers at the end of the year. We were on the verge of being stuck on the same boat as WSU and OSU. We had to take the ACC's scraps just to stay in a power 4 conference. Be grateful for what we have, and stop being so negative.

CAL is one of the top 15? 20? recruiting beds in the entire nation. You? choose to lose.

there is a direct correlation between the low income losers on this board like doubtful bear/philly bear who can't afford to attend any cal football games & those with negative non constructive attitudes that can't find any aspects of cal football enjoyable

if u honestly can't see the FUN factor of going to los angeles (nobu malibu, shopping on rodeo/melrose, golf at riv & lacc, drinks at chateau marmont, etc) while rooting for ur alma mater (not a **** academic skool like ducktilldeath's worthless degree) in a game that means so much to the players, their families & the program in setting up a successful 2025 season why try to drag like sofa king trumpanzee those berkeley grads that r happy people into ur sad world of socioeconomic depression/posting caustic **** on a gameday thread??

an inclusive party in los angeles, everybody is invited (including the losers of the world)#
