Sadly, you may be right. Cal can't win with this loser mentality.
Seems like many of us realize we can do so much better while the powers that be just don't care and are satisfied with relentlessly disappointing mediocrity. Been watching Cal since the 1960s and I'm really not sure how much longer I wish to subject myself to this. With little variation it seems the plan each season is to beat three patsies, then struggle the rest of the way at 3-6, gain some toilet bowl invitation and embarrass ourselves against another lightweight 6-6 opponent. Because we are in some sort of bowl, admin then plays it up like we are a football power. This just isn't my idea of success. The school,
the fans, the players, the alumni all deserve better. The Big Game was great, but so much of this year was just a downer with unfulfilled expectations. Hard to have hope with this
sub-par coaching staff that continually disappoints. And an administration that thinks this is acceptable.
time for Lyons to show what he is made of. Inaction now means he's just another one of his predecessors, despite the talk.

could we be headed for a return to the Pac 12 with second tier fill-ins? SDS, FSU, SJS. Sac St., Nev, UNLV, Hawaii, Utah St, Colo St., some combo of that...with Furd? UCLA's program looks to be in worse shape than ours. Would they want out of the B10?

Lyons has not shown he's any different than Tien. He's all talk, no results. He'll cheer on the team on Saturdays but won't take any meaningful action that actually moves the needle.
How quickly do you expect Lyons to move exactly? We're just now ending the first football season since he took the role and we haven't even played the bowl yet. At least give it a year before judging if he yields results.
If he has a business mentality, he knows that a new top kick has begun his leadership before he even takes the seat. If he's anywhere near the sports fan he claims to be, he would have walked in knowing Knowlton and JW and how they think and operate. Within two weeks after he took office, Lyons would have been in a position to act. He knows that Knowlton has to go first and the thing that would have taken the most time is identifying his replacement. Would he succumb to the "hiring consultant" ploy? Not if he's at all decisive. Those consultants serve a CYA function. At best, they can insulate him from the inside/secret contacts with potential candidates. Or, is Lyons waiting for the final report on that women's swim coach. If so, he's weak - that's just another way of failing to take responsibility.

So, Lyons should be acting now, maybe as late as a day after our bowl game. He knows what he has to do. It's just a matter of will he do it.

The Knowlton issue is complicated. There are multiple lawsuits by swimmers and one by Mckeever against the university. I'm no lawyer but I'd bet that Lyons is taking direction from UC lawyers. Just firing Knowlton may be much more expensive than any buyout. Just my guess.

the name of the game is delay, not win, necessarily. if the report is to be the pretext for firing, then Knowlton would appeal the report's veracity and make that appeal the grounds for a pitch to the Board that the case can be drawn out forever (maybe that's being done now). knowlton knows that the final report will mean he's gone...with no buyout. The swim coach knows that, too. If they're not in collusion, they're both ignorant.

If I were Lyons, I would leak the next-to-worst secret during his tenure, fire him and tie him up in litigation until he accepts it, in defeat, or paint the picture to him now that his life will be hell for the foreseeable future and he'll end up broke.

Either Knowlton knew about the abuse and did nothing, in which case he failed his duty to protect the student athletes, or he was clueless about something in his own department under his watch, in which case he's incompetent. IMHO, both are grounds for dismissal with cause.

He refused to meet with swimmer's parents and when swimmer's reported abuse to him he did not investigate as required by law, much less university policy, and instead told the swimmers McKeever was just a "tough coach and someday you will be grateful for her." This after a the whole issue with the trainer. Even after reports of abuse came out in the press he did not immediately investigate and instead extended her contract.

It will be a great day when Knowlton, Wilcox, Simon-O'neil, Everett, and others are gone. It should become a national holiday! Or at least a state holiday!!

Enough is enough!

Either Knowlton knew about the abuse and did nothing, in which case he failed his duty to protect the student athletes, or he was clueless about something in his own department under his watch, in which case he's incompetent. IMHO, both are grounds for dismissal with cause.
If the report is at all equivocal, it's all over and Knowlton will not be fired.

Didn't McKeever get fired for abuse? That's an admission that there was abuse in Knowlton's department. Again, either he failed his duty to protect students or he was incompetent.
i'm assuming they're looking for wider issues: who else? who knew and when? signs of a cover-up?litigation by students? Title IX implications?

Absolutely, I get that. But apropos of Knowlton, he was wither derelict in his duty or he was incompetent. Both are fireable offenses. Why is he still drawing a paycheck is Cal AD?

He refused to meet with swimmer's parents and when swimmer's reported abuse to him he did not investigate as required by law, much less university policy, and instead told the swimmers McKeever was just a "tough coach and someday you will be grateful for her." This after a the whole issue with the trainer. Even after reports of abuse came out in the press he did not immediately investigate and instead extended her contract.

From your post, it sounds like JK is guilty of dereliction of duty, at the very least. That coupled with negligence and another form of incompetence. All of this amounts to termination with cause, IMHO.

Basically, I still don't understand how JK is still employed at Cal as the AD. As for the Lyons apologists, I'm curious how they're spinning his inaction apropos of terminating Knowlton.

He'll be back as long as he wants to be. The powers that be are quite happy with this season.

The only defensible delay is getting ducks in order to fire him for cause. Still, placing him on leave in the meantime would seem a nobrainer.

A poster implied that we may not be firing Knowlton because that would imply liability in the lawsuits filed by the swimmers against the university, which if true, would be heinous. Moreover, it seems more the opposite to me. Knowlton himself likely violated the law and violated the swimmers' civil rights. As you pointed out, we already fired McKeever for her abuse. By protecting him and continuing to pay him $millions the university only increases its liability toward the swimmers, morally if not legally, The whole thing stinks. The university should do right by the swimmers including firing Knowlton.

I don't really practice PI law, but from what I remember, California law doesn't permit post-injury remedies as evidence of wrongdoing in previous cases. (We'll need a PI attorney to step up here and chime in for a more thorough explanation of the law.)

If I remembered correctly above, then that means there really is no defense for Lyons not having fired Knowlton already.
