Moving back to OL coach? I hope Wilcox gets a quality, young, creative OC.

Was it ever reported here what happened with Spivital? Everyone here thought he was a solution only for him to exit under mysterious circumstances

This is Wilcox we're talking about. He's probably going to promote Gilbert to OC as the path of least resistance

Being that Gilbert was reportedly the primary recruiter for JKS, that would not be surprising. That 'could be' who JKS wants for OC, and that Nando, who has been coached at QB by Gilbert, has a strong relationship with Gilbert as well, and is all in on such a move.

We don't know for certain but the consensus from the rumors seems to be that Wilcox meddled in the offense instead of giving free rein and that Spav went to Baylor where their coach was on the hot seat because he thought it was his best path back into a HC position

Wilcox needs to disengage from the offense entirely. Bring in the equivalent of a offensive co-coach who has complete autonomy in personnel, play-calling, etc. He shouldn't make this hire. We've burned through so many OC's it's clear the problem is Wilcox and even he should see that by now.

A new OC won't make any difference as long as Wilcox is still head coach.

100%. Pure insanity. Doing the same thing and expecting different results. Unfortunately this administration will never learn. Its not the OC thats the problem.

Sounds that no matter what, several of you will be not supporting the Bears for at least another year, since Coach Wilcox is going nowhere. Right??
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

You can safely assume it was a lower body injury. He's listed as week-to-week so you know he's never coming back.

This hire needs to understand that they will essentially be the head coach elect.

For OC and Hawaii recruit JKS system fit - What about Nick Rolovich had many high-powered offenses in the Pac12 at WSU. Hawaii roots having played and coached at UH. Also Bay Area roots from MC and currently coaching at San Marin HS. Local - No relocation needed. Or what about former Oregon HC and OC Mark Helfrich. He coached Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Totally agree. Problem is Wilcox getting involve in the offense. He need to stay the f away. Far far away.

I wouldn't mind at all Bloesch being our dedicated O-line coach, but it's pretty rare for somebody to take a step down and stay on staff. As Offensive Coordinator, I thought he was "okay". Unless Gilbert really showed something, behind the scenes, promoting him to OC, over Bloesch, seems odd.

Bottom line, I have zero confidence in Wilcox to hire a really good Offensive Coordinator. Why would he all of a sudden get it right the fifth time?

Gilbert has 8 seasons of previous experience as a college OC. Maybe he should have been the OC this season.

good point. proviso that his oc will be a true qb coach and a successful one at that. I forgot about Rolo - a different kind of dude, but he has the chops. never thought much of Helfrich.

there's still that young guy at unlv. if we could get him.

I have brought Rolovich up a few times in recent years, but acknowledge there are political complications given his exit from WSU and the continuing litigation (though his trial may be starting this week?). There was speculation last year he was an informal consultant of some sort. I think this would be a home run hire for OC.

No good OC would want to come here. They would have to deal with Wilcox meddling and would be the first on the chopping block since there is no chance that Wilcox is fired

Davis Webb is the QB coach for the Denver Broncos but Cal OC sounds like a downgrade

Wonder if a certain QB commit indicated he might look elsewhere if there wasn't a change at OC.

Wonder if bowl game will be an audition for someone currently on staff. Last years Independence Bowl did seem awfully prophetic about how this year would turn out offensively.

Not exactly a sterling track record with those previous years as OC though...

Surprised they are funding a new OC search, (or it's being forced on Wilcox). I think Mike Bloesch was put in a tough spot to be an OC and coach O-line, but he has potential as an OC down the line. I liked the games he called vs Auburn and Miami for example,

In terms of target names that jumped out to me as possible and cheap (i imagine the department does not want to fund that much for a new hire)

Andy Ludwig, was just fired from Utah after 5 years so Wilcox will have some familiarity with

Kevin Johns: Was not retained by Elko as he moved from Duke but had a good track record there

Wilcox gets criticized on this site for both
1) being a head coach who only focuses on defenses and leaves his OC to be on his own; and
2) meddling with the offense.

Which one is true?

Wasn't Ludwig the OC under Holmoe? And wasn't everyone calling for his scalp back then? Kind of funny how he went to Utah and had a pretty good run

Which is why we may be able to attract a decent OC if we give them some assurances of control and autonomy. You're a hero if the team does well, and you may get a HC shot if it does poorly (provided the offense improves).

He was under Tedford, but it was during the start of Tedford's decline (2009-10) and so people were just unhappy about that. As with Wilcox and his OCs, I think the problem there was really that the head coach was losing it, not so much the assistant.

Wilcox doesn't know enough about the offense to meddle. He gives the OC complete control, that's the problem!
