Checks out. From the Pacific Northwest (Boise, Idaho) and played for Boise. Was the OC at Boise the entire time Wilcox was the DC. Has coached in Texas. They are the exact same age (born 11 days apart). I am sure they are buddies. He's been unemployed for 3 years after getting fired after a brief stint at Auburn with a big buyout.

Anyone have an option on his offense? I assume "multiple"?

I remember a power running game under center (long time ago)

Not that familiar with Harsin, but from a quick read about how his time at Auburn ended, sounds like an absolutely terrible hire. That plus his likely friendship with Wilcox means it probably happens. Crappy coaches who just happen to be Wilcox's best friends - hmm, like Sirmon perhaps?

His offenses consistently averaged (roughly) between 35 - 40 ppg, as both OC and HC at Boise, for more than a decade (combining both positions). He did the same as OC at Texas (27+ ppg followed by 30+ ppg). And the same thing as HC at Arkansas St (or maybe it was Alabama St - I took my eye off the page for a moment).

Some of those holes that Boise's RB was getting would have been house calls for Ott or Jet.

Imagine the Cal Football alternate universe in which Wilcox actually had talented friends.

Instead he has Adam sandler level friends. To be fair though, Grandmas Boy is an absolute cult classic

I don't think Harsin is the first choice or he would already be hired. That said, Harsin was Petersen's OC and Harsin had a great record at Boise State as head coach. His offenses put up big numbers. Auburn tends to burn through head coaches rather quickly. The highly regarded Hugh Freeze seems headed into flames as well.

Based on past performances of his offenses, seems like he would be a major upgrade from Wilcox's other OCs at Cal. But since Wilcox is doing the hiring, there is good reason to be skeptical.

Harsin appears to be a dynamite hire.

Yeah, some similarities with Musgrave, but Baldwin too. Or a little bit like hiring Tedford as OC.

He was OC under Peterson and Mack Brown (briefly) then most of his success was as a HC. It is tough to get a read on what "his" offense is like. I assume "multiple."

Yeah I wouldn't read too much from his bad record as a HC at Auburn or his good record as a HC at Boise.

Baldwin had a nice run as a HC at EWU. Turns out he was a bad OC.

No one is asking the right question here. Can he recruit and more importantly can he recruit OL?

We need horses in the trenches. Rather we need hogs. Mean streaks that plow the field with holes so big I can get 4.5 yards per carry.

It really doesn't matter who we hire. We need better player evaluation and development. That's key that's all that matters.

Mendoza cannot get hit as much as he did this year. He will be the LAST quality QB to come here if he does.

We also need to move Fernando outside the pocket more, have better playcalling that does not result in so many third and longs and Fernando needs to learn to throw the ball away.

Wilcox was also a great coach at BSU, doesn't mean he can't coach at the P5 level. Another example is his successor at Auburn, Hugh Freeze, who was amazing at G5 Liberty but mediocre in P4

Wilcox was also a great coach at BSU, doesn't mean he can't coach at the P5 level. Another example is his successor at Auburn, Hugh Freeze, who was amazing at G5 Liberty but mediocre in P4

And to be present for his son's hs football games, and help him navigate the recruiting process before heading off to college to play D1 fb. And he was still spending Alabama's buyout money, so it's not like he 'needed' to rush right back into the cfb grinder.

this wouldn't be a home run hire, but would it be better than what we have? would it be significantly better?

As long as we have JW, we will not get a home run hire. 1. we couldn't afford it. 2. a home run would have better opportunities elsewhere. 3. IF a home run might be interested in us for whatever reason, the window on such a deal would close quickly and suddenly - we are unable to strike while the iron is hot...not with these bozo's.
