No greater repudiation of our head coach & program than the guy who bleeds blue and gold leaving for greener pastures. First JKS now Fernando, the future is unspeakably bleak.
Cal QB Fernando Mendoza plans to enter the transfer portal, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The 19-game starter immediately becomes one of the top QBs on the market. Mendoza has 2 more seasons of eligibility. @chris_hummer had it first. pic.twitter.com/bTrD6kNq2L

Maybe he heard that thee new oc is bringing in all his guys from his present gig?

More broadly, though, if we can't figure out how to keep a guy like Mendoza, we have some very serious problems.

That is the heart of the matter and I think why this bothers us all so much.

Deja vu, all over again.GoCal80 said:
A guy can only take so many hits. Hopefully he finds a place with a good offensive line. Looks like Cal is going to face a rebuilding period for the next couple of years.
Possibly. Or perhaps Bloomington.Bear_Territory said:

You picked up on the irony. Good. We are making progress. This session is over, so look to another thread.concernedparent said:Bobodeluxe said:

Billionaires bought themselves a President and now college football teams. The amounts of money flowing into NIL is really obscene. Whoever has the most NIL dollars wins.
This is more on the portal. NIL just accelerated things but ultimately it's the ability to transfer as many times as you want with no penalty that is the undoing. In this case, even without NIL I bet we lose Mendoza. Any player with NFL aspirations is going to look to upgrade in terms of profile, opportunity to put up big numbers, coaching staff, etc.Grrrrah76 said:

It's about both.Strykur said:This ain't about money, WilcoxGrrrrah76 said:

This sounds like I'm gone, not just testing the waters.westcoastdude said:— Fernando Mendoza (@qb_fernando) December 11, 2024
Behind door #1 is a lot of money, a good team, a solid OL, relative stability, good coaching, and more wins. Door #2 is less money, a lousy OL, massive instability, mediocre coaching, and a .500 season. He chose door #1. We gave Mendoza no reason to stay.Grrrrah76 said:
It's also about dollars. Phil Knight in Oregon and Ellison in Michigan buying 5* quarterbacks. Mendoza will get millions before he plays a down in the NFL, which is not a sure thing. Looks like he learned something at Hass.

At any other school in the country, Wilcox and the AD would haver been fired along time ago.
