I'd do it today no questions asked. Local guy, went to Laney, grinder at Cal, won a Super Bowl ring (almost 2), has the connections to coaches, etc.

CJ has my vote

At a minimum, he should be a consultant, especially for the running game.

We won't though.
The powers at be have ****ed us.
Knowlton, Wilcox, and all the complicit administrators who drove us to this should be tarred and feathered.
Plenty of us have been barking about the problem for years and demanding not extend Wilcox, fire Knowlton, fire Wilmoe, and hire a dam alum.
They absolutely knew but were stubborn and didn't listen to those who pay the bills.
Now they get to relish in an empty stadium next year and ballooning debt.

Unless someone with deep pockets steps up, it is too expensive to get rid of Knowlton and Wilcox. Cal is in a real bind. We are losing lots of money with the current leadership, but need upfront cash to get rid of them.

Exactly we will lose 3.6 mil a year by losing 10k fans but apparently it's too expensive to pay 3.4 million to remove a malignant tumor from our program.

Watching Wilcox standing around by himself 30 yards away from the team last night when Ott was trying to motivate the guys was just awful. I can't believe this clown is representing our university.

CJ was fired after one season as a RB coach at Rice. That was in 2022. Not sure what he has done since then. If he wants a job he needs to put in the work and prove his coaching credentials. Would love to see him back at Cal someday

Then let him recruit. He knows Cal as a student. He also played in the NFL and won a Super Bowl. Show the ring to kids on the recruiting trail.

that's why I'm against all this bashing of Mendoza. He's not giving up on Cal, he's giving up on having a meaningful collegiate career with this loser as HC for the foreseeable future

The problem is that the campus currently has a huge deficit. The stadium debt has had a negative impact on morale for faculty and staff and that makes it difficult to get support for a buyout of contracts for coaches and athletic directors. The campus is suffering from years of deferred maintenance, so the buildings have leaks when it rains, and failing temperature control systems, etc., etc., etc.

Which is why the only way to get meaningful action on this is for them to see an empty cms which I think they will.
I'm not in any way advocating for an empty stadium.
But to your point.
The TAS program has been increasing 20 percent yoy towards north of 50 million with the EVCP likely to keep doing so.
The deferred maintenance is whatever and even though it's 2 billion it's been getting kicked down the road since as long as I can remember back to 04…
The bigger issue is the other 2 billion of capital improvements earmarked for modernization that is an imperative to remaining viable in the distance Ed / remote learning space.
I guess the point I'm trying to make and in agreement with you is that with light the way done, TAS ballooning across campus, decreasing state funding, the prospect of what Trump's effect on funding might be, etc.
The spotlight is now finally on Wilcox because the football program absolutely has to be self sufficient.
If (which I think is the case given no notable home games and no big game next season) attendance dips towards a trend of 20k per game in ooc i fully expect Wilcox to be canned by conference play start. If that doesn't happen I expect we'll be relegated following the season.
It will say a lot about our future if a forex trader allows the program to lose money in a big way next season sans a change of coaches.

CJA just got fired as a running backs coach from Rice who went 4-8. Everyone just stop, dude has never done anything as a coach and just talks. There are 1000's of people I would take before CJA. Wait till the portal is over, btw going to lose more players. We have coaches on offense who know how to coach now and the OC has guys on staff they want for the first time during JW tenure. JW is not leaving this year, ****ing stop complaining or give millions of dollars if you want that. Go Bears

Ah yes, the other board which was so convinced Mendoza was staying that they were blindsided by him leaving. And now they are suddenly uncovering so much dirt on the situation.

If I were leaving a sinking ship of a company, it would be against my morals to not let perspective new hires know how bad things were rather than let them find out the hard way.

I don't know what Sebasta wrote, but I can draw some conclusions based on what others have posted. From what I've read (and concluded), Nando's greatest sin is that he warned JKS about how crap Cal football and its HC are. Frankly, that's not really something that upsets me. He was honest and forthright. Sure, he may bot have had to call JKS to tell him his thoughts, but if Nando was looking out for someone with NFL dreams, I can't blame him. Like I've said before, I warn prospective Cal students away from Cal if they have graduate/med/law school aspirations. It's not because I love Cal any less, I just recognize that there are easier ways to achieve one's dreams than to go to Cal and struggle.

People who weren't in the room when all of this stuff was happening only know what they are told. My loyalties lie with the guy who drove us 98 yards against our rival over the guy who raised the money so we could get Sam Jackson and Chandler Rogers on the roster. Leaving for a better program is an act of self-preservation.

My loyalties lie with Cal. I'm grateful for Sebasta's efforts to get Cal the players the coaching staff desires. Sure, sometimes the players don't pan out or Cal whiffs on the players the coaches want. But Sebasta and the Cal Legends Collective are putting in the work to make Cal better. For that, they should be commended.

That said, the coaching has been subpar (to put it kindly), especially on offense. I can't blame players with NFL aspirations for choosing to pursue their dreams elsewhere if the coaching has been this bad. I don't fault Nando for seeking better coaching and a better offense elsewhere.

As for the comments about Nando sabotaging the JKS signing, like I said before, it's not that bad IMHO. He was being truthful about how bad the Cal football program is under Wilsux and company. Whether he should have been (or needed to be) is irrelevant especially as he just confirmed what many of us have been saying for years in this forum about how bad Wilsux is as a coach and how his offenses have been horrible (with the possible exception of the Spav year--and even then, it's been stated that Wilsux drove off Spav from the staff for running an effective offense that kept Wilsux's defense off the field more than Wilsux preferred).

I tend to believe that when folks like Addison Ooms make the same insinuations that there's some fire behind all the smoke surrounding Mendoza's departure.

Cal did great by Mendoza as far as I'm concerned. We offered him as a two star who was otherwise going to Yale, allowed him a chance to compete for the starting job, gave him the job, and supported him to do well enough that he's considered a top QB in the portal. He should not feel slighted by Rogers coming in given how we lost several QBs following his first year and he quickly secured the job full time. He certainly shouldn't have been entitled to feel anyway about Jackson coming in the previous year.

Again, in what world does a 2 star with a single P5 offer becoming a desired portal QB transfer with early talks about NFL viability show indicate a program that let him down? Our program should be way better than it is but that's Wilcox letting Cal down and not Mendoza specifically.

Like I said, I don't know what Sebasta wrote. I'm merely drawing conclusions based on what others have said about what he wrote. From that, it appeared the big gripe was that Nando warned JKS off from signing with Cal. Let's assume it was Nando marking his territory and telling JKS that the latter would never start ahead of him, that's not a problem for me, at all. It show the type of competitive fire and swagger I want to see in Cal's starting QB.

As for the claim my post was disingenuous, that's a laugh! As I mentioned before, I was drawing conclusions about what Sebasta wrote based on what others commented. As such, I could only surmise what Nando's comments were. In my previous post, I mentioned that it seemed (to me) the crus of the Nando criticism was that he gave JKS an honest assessment of Wilsux's craptastic coaching and how that meant Cal's football program wouldn't be able to springboard anyone (on offense) into the NFL. From your comment, I take it that was not the criticism of Nando.

Your attempt to claim my previous statement was disingenuous, though, is ironic as your post is actually being disingenuous in its attempt to defend Wilsux. If you want to defend Wilsux and claim he's a good coach, have at it. But based on his eight years of mediocre results and losing record at Cal, you've got a tough argument.

If we would significantly reduce the size of our bloated administration, we'd have money to address some of the issues you mentioned.

Also, if we could replace mindless functionaries who refuse to do the jobs for which they were hired (e.g., market the Cal football game experience, increase interest in Cal football), that would be helpful. Bring in competent people who will do the job and thus increase the athletic department's revenue through increased ticket sales and licensed paraphernalia sales.

If only that was the case, then it would be easier to swallow. Unfortunately, what he purportedly did went far beyond that. It wasn't rooted in altruism towards JKS, but it didn't seem like it was rooted in vengeance against our program either. Strangely, that just makes it worse IMO.

If only that was the case, then it would be easier to swallow. Unfortunately, what he purportedly did went far beyond that. It wasn't rooted in altruism towards JKS, but it didn't seem like it was rooted in vengeance against our program either. Strangely, that just makes it worse IMO.

Thanks. It seems like I drew another erroneous conclusion.
I'm with you 01. I'm not sure what Fernando's "crime" was as the post on the Insider Board was heavily edited before I signed up (and paid for a full year), so all I could do is conjecture from innuendo. What I do know is that Fernando literally sacriiced his body for the team. I'm grateful for the 98 yards and other achievements. The pity is that Wilcox finally got quality offense coaches.

I know most will disagree, but as Fernando has not signed with another team (yet), I think Wilcox should get on his knees and beg him to come back. If Wilcox is offended by this, I can tell him where to go. (In a perfect world, Knowlton would go with him.) I'd rather have Fernando for another year than Wilcox for one (or more) years.
