Agree 100%. The real solution was to take the money OUT of college sports, not inject more. That would have meant that athletes would not be missing out on revenue sharing-because there would have been no crazy amount of dollars circulating to be missed out on. They get their degrees and free college-that would have been the reward. Anyone who didn't want the academic experience could attend a farm team sponsored by the NFL. And get paid that way.

It is an interesting model.....

But ultimately it would never have happened. Remember - a big part of this is the artifice of higher education accounting where the $$$ from football goes to the AD....which it turn is "awarded" as a scholarship to an upper middle class kid in a non revenue sport with the hope that they are going to become a future donor....which in turn just flows back (cause the scholarship award winner never sees it) as money into the general fun. Since the marginal costs to educate another student at most of these semi-non selectives is small, this is a great revenue stream that would need to be replaced with significantly higher enrollment yields (because some of those "new" students would come as non-full pay so you need more of em).

I really don't think CF lasts that much longer with this model. SOMETHING will emerge to play on Saturday but it is pro-sports with non of the guard rails (free agency restrictions, drafts, salary caps, etc.) designed to maintain competitive balance which is ultimately about keeping fan engagement high.

But without the networks and their free/low-cost distribution model a huge portion of the viewership would not exist. I watch a ton of football but have only been in a pro or college stadium a handful of times in the past 70 years.

This is the way. The sooner it happens the better. There are millions of fans (of that 'other football') in this world who love and support teams that have no realistic dreams of playing at the highest level (C'mon QPR!). It does not affect their enjoyment of their teams and their games. And, it costs a lot less to attend. Wanna see the GOATs play once in a while? Make a pilgrimage and enjoy the game. They don't have to play for your team.

Want proof, tune in to Welcome to Wrexham and appreciate their joy, community and passion. I hope for something like that for us. Capped off with an occasional run at the National Colliegiate Amateur Football Playoffs.

Maybe this will eventually force change. One possible scenario:

  • More top players drop out /transfer after the end of the regular season OR EVEN BEFORE THE END OF THE REGULAR SEASON.
  • Fans quit watching the playoff or bowl games because the marquee players aren't participating.
  • TV ratings take a dive and networks can't get the same $$ from advertisers, so revenues take a dive
  • Consequently, networks (and maybe conferences) demand that Congress get involved to develop a more rational system.
As an aside, the first instance of a top player refusing to play in a bowl game, rather than risk his NFL prospects, was Christian McCaffery at Stanford. Am I correct about this? Just what I'd expect from a Stanford guy.

And any player dumb enough to sigh would deserve "slavery" as many here say.

I hear ya, and agree, except for 1 big problem. There isn't any "farm system" for football. I have maintained FOR YEARS that the NFL intentionally uses CFB as its minor league system. NBA does it too. If we had actual minor leagues for CFB and basketball, then it would be like baseball. Kids have a legit choice - go pro, or get a free education. But we don't have that and what we have really sux.

Yep. Somebody said it's because players need to register before January. The IRONY of this is mind-boggling. A "system" that destroyed CFB (portal and NIL) is using higher ed requirements as a reason to open the portal like this. Makes me puke!

I suppose I have a casual dislike for the playoffs because they broke up the great tradition of the Cotton, Sugar, Orange, and Rose Bowls. More generally, I don't care that there is a single national champion in football, especially when the final four teams are from schools thousands of miles away that I have no connection to - I don't know any of their alumni and I've never been to their campuses. It's not like March Madness and never will be.

Solution? What imaginary problem do you think taking money out of football players hands resolves?

The problem is that it's a multi-billion dollar industry exploiting the bodies of players, most of which will never play professionally.

There are other problems that remain unaddressed either by the previous system or the present system: the lack of long term healthcare for players who sacrificed their bodies for the entertainment of fans.

The healthcare issue won't be resolved, but the league does need a salary cap at this point. We need minimum salaries , and luxury penalties for going over the cap and the money sent to weaker conferences or small market teams. Plus, nobody is being paid for their image, theyre being paid salaries.

That's a start.

I hate the playoff because it ruined the best regular season in sports, kills the Cinderella season and gives the big name schools yet another advantage.

1. The Loss of the Best Regular Season:
When the bowl games were the ultimate prize, every game mattered. Winning your conference mattered. Losing one game dramatically changed how the season was ultimately viewed by the fan base. This kind of importance is what separated college football from other sports. The NFL, the NBA, College basketball, MLB as long as you got into the post-season you could 'turn it on' and relegate the regular season to being a pointless endeavor, but you could not do that in college football.

2. The Loss of the Cinderella Season:
I liked college football for the fact that a traditionally weak school could pull an upset and have a once-a-decade run in conference play to win the conference title and play in a major bowl. I liked that underdog story. I liked the Northwestern's of the world being able to talk about that miracle 96' season when they went to the Rose Bowl. It doesn't have the same nostalgia, if that miracle season ends with a first round exit. Meanwhile, watching the big name programs have their dreams crushed in an upset was equally fun. Its not as much fun when you know they will still make the playoff as an at-large.

3. Another Advantage for the Big Time Programs:
The selection process will be inherently biased towards the big name programs and this will create a self-fulfilling prophecy as the players will want to play for the teams in the playoffs. This makes it harder for the smaller schools to compete. The Big Ten and SEC are already talking about receiving a guaranteed number of spots in the playoffs. Why? Because they have the viewership power to make that demand. That means the system being set up will be biased towards those conferences and the big name schools. Why is it fun to participate in a system rigged against the school I am rooting for?

Since the marginal costs to educate another student at most of these semi-non selectives is small, this is a great revenue stream that would need to be replaced with significantly higher enrollment yields (because some of those "new" students would come as non-full pay so you need more of em).

I really don't think CF lasts that much longer with this model. SOMETHING will emerge to play on Saturday but it is pro-sports with non of the guard rails (free agency restrictions, drafts, salary caps, etc.) designed to maintain competitive balance which is ultimately about keeping fan engagement high.


There are a ton of foreign student-athletes on Cal's most successful teams...not sure how that fits into your theory that those playing in the Olympic/non-revenue sports are there to be future donors....

Those that still believe in academics. If you want a kid to start Winter Quarter they pretty much need to be committed and moving in that direction no later than Xmas. That is the rub - the portal is there for the idea of Academics, not bowl games.

And I might well be wrong but I think it is a portal for ALL NCAA athletes, not just revenue.

But ultimately it would never have happened. Remember - a big part of this is the artifice of higher education accounting where the $$$ from football goes to the AD....which it turn is "awarded" as a scholarship to an upper middle class kid in a non revenue sport with the hope that they are going to become a future donor....which in turn just flows back (cause the scholarship award winner never sees it) as money into the general fun. Our athletes are also students, but it would help level the playing field. Everyone knows that the SEC, and schools like Oregon don't have students. Dudes have a bunch of tutors writing their papers for them.
