  • 2013 he took over as HC at Ark St. The year before he took over, Ark St won their conference and had the highest scoring offense in their conference. In his year as HC they finished tied for 1st and the offense was 5th (out of 8). Not great."

Just a couple points here. I don't get this take above. Ark St. has a phenomenal year, their head coach leaves for greener pastures, probably taking the cream of the crop with him, and Harsin steps in to pick up the pieces, right? You expect another great season after that? Teams almost always collapse after a huge season when the top people depart. Look at FSU, and they KEPT their coach! I'm cherry picking here, but I just don't think we will know much until we see how they do next year, and I'm excited, and if we flop, we get to get rid of Wilcox, and that's a win (all of this assuming we get rid of Knowlton, too).

Also, stepping away for family is indeed a thing. I've had a job where I was so stressed out I had to bail. I was on edge around the house every day and it was driving everyone crazy. Kids were getting neglected, relationship stress, all of it meant something had to give. I'm really glad I made that decision. Had friends who offed themselves because of the stress, or ended up divorced. So no, I don't think taking time to be with family is code for getting fired. It could be, but it's often a legitimate reason for stepping away.

Pete Carroll took a year off between being fired by the Boston Patriots and taking the USC HC job. USC alumni would say that It didn't seem to hurt him.
