Not to throw any doubt on it, but this is a prediction not a report.

Sounds like a worst-kept secret. They've been sitting on it and feel they can post now. It APPEARS that it was a done deal a while back. But that was also a while back, so even then things can change.

Why? Start JKS. The team is not winning more then 3-4 games next year, get his era started

I hope this doesn't strongly impact JKS. Obviously, the best QB should start, but I was already looking forward to JKS flinging the rock next season.

Awesome to see this rumored signing finally happen! I am so excited to see Cal's revamped offense next year with a healthy RB room and bunch of new road graders on the OL. I suspect Devin Brown will be a better QB for us than Fernando. Can't wait for spring ball!

Go Bears!

You only have to get a gander at his completely apropos screen name to find your answer.

The thing is, the JKS era will likely be short lived. If he plays as a freshman and shows a bunch of potential, then we maybe get one more year before he transfers to a bigger, richer program with a shot at winning and getting more exposure. In today's college football, you need to have as many good QBs as possible.

Surely JKS knew this already when he made his decision to return to his rightful and original choice. If JKS wins out, so be it. If not, he'll still get a lot of learning, the list of successful freshman QBs is pretty short compared to those who bloom in later years. One list I found shows only about 5 to 6 freshman had impact seasons in the last 10 years out of roughly 1000+ QB seasons - Trevor Lawrence, Jake Fromm, Jalen Hurts, JT Barrett, Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel. It's very rare. However, given that Brown hasn't played much either, it's probably a toss up right now, with both having to learn from a new coach and about a new offense.

Look up Devin Brown's 2021 senior highlights on Hudl and tell me who you think is the best incoming quarterback .

Sagapolutele, who is the Hawaii all time passing leader playing for Campbell High in Ewa, has the better arm and is the better athlete.

Brown is older and has some college experience.

Never heard that one before. But thanks for the unnecessary personal attack.

I love the idea that thinking a team that's bad every year is going to be bad makes me stupid.

You're kidding right? Those posts look the same every year. Gotta sell some insider subs.

I get it, we all get optimistic in the offseason but it's gonna be an ugly season- I just think it's worth getting JKS experience at least. Like Goff first year, and maybe 2-3 seasons later we can get to 8 wins like Goff did.

JKS is more accurate and has better touch at all levels of the field. Brown (comparing to senior year tape for fairness) has a stronger arm and is a better athlete and runner. They both have incredibly high potential and I'm on record as saying JKS will go down as one of the Cal greats. That being said, Brown had a very high ceiling out of high school and has some experience as an older player. There's also a history of Oh. St. players who were buried on the depth chart going on to having great careers elsewhere (notably Joe Burrows at the QB position). I don't think it's ridiculous to say that a former high 4* QB who was at a powerhouse school and overlooked could win the job this year, it's also possible that the arm talent of JKS will win out.

The much larger takeaway is that we have two high 4/5* QBs competing for the job. Obviously there's no guarantee that Brown will be Burrows or that JKS will be Goff but both of them have sky-high abilities and whomever wins the job has a good chance to be a productive QB and a top 6 ACC QB

The era of "all time greats" in CFB has a finite window now. The staff needs to win next year as we all know, so may the best QB win! (literally and figuratively). It's one year, every year until this blows up.

Reports are that Ohio State endorsing the POTUS' half time stump speech made his decision final.

It is clear that there would be nothing similar between this team and the team from Goff's first season, except that if JKS started, both teams would have freshman qb's. This year's team is starting from a very different place than that team. There is way more talent on this team, way more. This alone makes your comments feel like you are exaggerating the bad.

Re QBs who transferred away from Ohio St: That includes Kyle McCord who played for Syracuse this season. If Brown plays at Cal as well as McCord did at Syracuse, he will likely win the job. If he's not near that level, then our Bears will roll with JKS. It's good to have quality depth.

A different take:

1. Play the guy that gives us the best chance to win right away. Only wins are going to get this thing turned around. Very likely, that's Brown, at least in 2025. We need a guy who can help us win games now.

2. Fine for JKS to spend a year getting up to speed before he gets thrown in there, Goff was an exception, playing pretty well as a true freshman. And the hits he took and the pressure he endured might have broken a lesser QB, but instead, he got stronger.

3. Starting JKS undeservedly only supplies a built-in excuse to give Wilcox another year.

Great arm and accuracy. This is a wonderful pickup. Also, that HS team of his seems to have had an incredible set of TEs and WRs. Wonder where they all went. Also, some of that competition was laughable, but most of it looked decent. This is such a great spot we're in now.

Agreed. Cal can't afford a step back from the 2024 season's disappointing results. They absolutely need to show improvement next year. There is a window of opportunity for Cal to make the cut for the oft-rumored "superconference". Even if this is five years away, they need to attract increased NIL $ from donors now and that requires momentum in the program.

Brown is the best QB Cal has attracted from the portal since . . . well, Davis Webb was pre-portal, but you have to go back that far. Calm down, all you Ryan Glover fans out there! 8^)

What a great news for Cal football. I'm curious what brought the all these highly potential recruits to Cal recently? The new offense coaching staff? ACC exposure? Increase in NIL budget? Rich Lyons' influence?

Play the guy that gives Cal the best chance to win because everyone will transfer anyway.

There is no reason to invest in a player anymore. If the player over performs they will leave for more money. If the player underperforms they will leave for a fresh start.
