Not to throw any doubt on it, but this is a prediction not a report.

Sounds like a worst-kept secret. They've been sitting on it and feel they can post now. It APPEARS that it was a done deal a while back. But that was also a while back, so even then things can change.
How can you say that after reading the recent reports comparing the '24 and '25 units?falseintellect said:
Why? Start JKS. The team is not winning more then 3-4 games next year, get his era started
Ohio State QB Devin Brown has signed with Cal, sources tell @mzenitz and I for @247Sports/@CBSSports.

Brown, a former top 50 recruit, spent three seasons in Columbus. He’s one of the top available QBs in the @247SportsPortal rankings.https://t.co/MmZI0qSols pic.twitter.com/B8mmG531pM
Former Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown has committed to Cal, sources tell me. He was the 5th best QB coming out of high school and was Ohio State's backup QB this past season.

The thing is, the JKS era will likely be short lived. If he plays as a freshman and shows a bunch of potential, then we maybe get one more year before he transfers to a bigger, richer program with a shot at winning and getting more exposure. In today's college football, you need to have as many good QBs as possible.falseintellect said:

You only have to get a gander at his completely apropos screen name to find your answer.

It is clear that there would be nothing similar between this team and the team from Goff's first season, except that if JKS started, both teams would have freshman qb's. This year's team is starting from a very different place than that team. There is way more talent on this team, way more. This alone makes your comments feel like you are exaggerating the bad.falseintellect said:Bobodeluxe said:How can you say that after reading the recent reports comparing the '24 and '25 units?falseintellect said:

You're kidding right? Those posts look the same every year. Gotta sell some insider subs.
I get it, we all get optimistic in the offseason but it's gonna be an ugly season- I just think it's worth getting JKS experience at least. Like Goff first year, and maybe 2-3 seasons later we can get to 8 wins like Goff did.

JKS is more accurate and has better touch at all levels of the field. Brown (comparing to senior year tape for fairness) has a stronger arm and is a better athlete and runner. They both have incredibly high potential and I'm on record as saying JKS will go down as one of the Cal greats. That being said, Brown had a very high ceiling out of high school and has some experience as an older player. There's also a history of Oh. St. players who were buried on the depth chart going on to having great careers elsewhere (notably Joe Burrows at the QB position). I don't think it's ridiculous to say that a former high 4* QB who was at a powerhouse school and overlooked could win the job this year, it's also possible that the arm talent of JKS will win out.
The much larger takeaway is that we have two high 4/5* QBs competing for the job. Obviously there's no guarantee that Brown will be Burrows or that JKS will be Goff but both of them have sky-high abilities and whomever wins the job has a good chance to be a productive QB and a top 6 ACC QB

Agreed. Cal can't afford a step back from the 2024 season's disappointing results. They absolutely need to show improvement next year. There is a window of opportunity for Cal to make the cut for the oft-rumored "superconference". Even if this is five years away, they need to attract increased NIL $ from donors now and that requires momentum in the program.Big C said:falseintellect said:

A different take:
1. Play the guy that gives us the best chance to win right away. Only wins are going to get this thing turned around. Very likely, that's Brown, at least in 2025. We need a guy who can help us win games now.
2. Fine for JKS to spend a year getting up to speed before he gets thrown in there, Goff was an exception, playing pretty well as a true freshman. And the hits he took and the pressure he endured might have broken a lesser QB, but instead, he got stronger.
3. Starting JKS undeservedly only supplies a built-in excuse to give Wilcox another year.
