Ott surprises everyone and returns for his senior season
Cal picks up several offensive lineman on portal
JKS leaves Oregon for Cal
National champion #2 quarterback comes to Cal

What a difference a month (and the portal) make!

IMO the entire Fernando chaos may have had a major silver lining
1. Until then Wilcox showed he could recruit a good defense. But was a flop at recruiting good QB's and offense.
2. Fernando's history showed that Wilcox could find a diamond in the rough QB and get him to the position that he became a hot item in the Portal.
3. Hopefully Brown and JKS will cement Cal's position as a MAJOR steppingstone for other QBs who are looking at improving their status as starters in CFB (JKS?) or in the Pros (Brown).
4. The next step would be for Wilcox to show that Cal can improve a QBs recruiting status in the Pros (like a Davis Webb) so that we don't keep losing our best QBs

IMO recruiting top QB candidates helps enormously in recruiting top Offensive players in other positions

Pretty optimistic considering Wilcox hasn't won 7+ games since back in 2019.

Not sure about the San Mateo JUCO QB but JKS and DB are enrolled and will be available for spring camp.

I think there is one potential change that is flying under the radar. Harsin and Rolo are both former successful head coaches. I hope (and expect) they will help Wilcox improve as a coach, particularly his game management. We can focus on all the personnel changes, but unless Wilcox improves, Cal is likely to again underachieve the talent on its roster.

Relatedly, I think the new OL and wr coaches are upgrades. Technically Bloesch was a good OL coach but he wasn't fully dedicated to that, so I'll call it an upgrade.

I have my hopes up, as I do every season. And there's some positives to latch onto, more then usual.

But ultimately, we still do have the worst head coach in FBS by just about any metric.

Bad coaches don't just become good ones, and even much more talented teams then ours struggle to win without elite coaching.

It really shows you how awful Wilcox is that these hires are a huge improvement. I mean, any other team in FBS would be pissed about these coaching additions- but we've been so abused by unqualified, terrible hires, that these seem positively FANTASTIC by comparison.

But we still have a head coach who has proven to be terrible and we've seen OVER and OVER that it doesn't matter who is calling the offense under Wilcox. It's always the same offense that he wants, and it's a conservative, boring, predictable one. It's going to look no different this upcoming season.

I love this forum and have enjoyed posting here for a very long time, but we all know why things get so overtly positive every offseason on here.

Awful additions?

- the new OL coach had a really good OL last year with little talent
- the new WR coach has put WRs in the league.
- we have a former highly touted OC and HC as an ANALYST
- our new OC is a proven OC


Where are the awful additions?

How much are you donating to NIL or to Cal to pay for the "non awful additions"???
