The Bears have looked pretty sharp through this season. My impression is they are opening up their offense a little bit more, and they certainly have some impressive speed in the backs. Cal defense is, as always, very solid. Tackling has been physical and dependable. The Bears have strength in their forwards. I think there's something special going on with this team. However a loss to Navy a few weeks ago does put more pressure on the Bears to close out the season strong as they head to the playoffs.
As I have been sharing for the last few years, collegiate rugby in the country is accelerating at a frantic pace. Other teams are going varsity and upping their programs, many programs are bringing in coaching and players from overseas, and the youth programs are strong and expanding at a surprising pace. So the days of Cal, St. Marys, Navy, Arkansas State, Life, etc. dominating are coming to an end here. It's great for the game of rugby, but is costing me more money in antacids!!!
