The university was uninterested in being interviewed about the Bear's Lair, saying even a conversation over the phone would be "challenging." This perhaps illustrates the broader issue UC Berkeley has never seen the Bear's Lair as the important piece of campus history it is, let alone a space that warrants anything more than an email exchange (which is the only thing university spokespeople would agree to even consider). Rather than embracing its storied history and sharing it with generations of new students, the university has stood by and watched it die a long, slow, seemingly never-ending death.

When I asked Ratiliff about the university removing the Big Game goal post from the bar when they found it was there, he had no idea what I was talking about.
Anybody have an idea where it is or what happened to it?

The Cal athletic department returned it to Stanford with their apologies and self-reported an NCAA violation.

Just about every story that comes out about how the Cal administration handles anything related to athletics just gives off the most dead-eyed, bureaucratic tone. It's no wonder all of the athletic programs are in trouble.
