Cal appears on ESPN's list of 100 most important portal transfers at 4 (Mendoza), 17 (Ott), 77 (Hunter) and 90 (Endries). All departures from Cal and no incoming transfers. More evidence as to why they think we had a terrible off season.

ESPN kinda sucks, tho. They didn't have much good to say about any of those players while they were still playing for our Bears, but once those guys entered the portal ESPN decided they were superstars.

Uh... no. I think it's pretty accurate.

You have some perception bias there. Okay when you're talking about the whole pool of college football players during the season there's tons of others players who are going to get more publicity.

But when you look at the smaller pool of transfer players and transfer players that are available these guys are all high impact and the list makes sense. I don't know if I acutally agree with all the minutiae ranking #'s but all those players we lost when looked at within a smaller pool of available players at their respective positions are all high impact players.

If I wanted to go out and get a QB from the portal that's available Mendoza is going to be up there. When you look at all the QB's in all of CFB during the season is he quite as high? No.

Individual players are rated when they are free agents: coming out of HS or as transfers. Otherwise it is teams that are rated.

Ott in particular had a lot of hype from ESPN going into last year after leading the PAC-12 in rushing the year before. Remember, ESPN is paying $40 million a year for our broadcast rights (even if we only receive a fraction of that because we had to buy our way into the ACC due to the horrible position Christ and Knowlton put us in through their lack of foresight and mismoves). We are one of two ESPN properties on the West Coast. I am pretty sure we would not have gotten College Gameday last year but for ESPN's desire to hype us.

We are losing guys that were productive, even very productive, starters, playing in a P4 conference. We are mostly replacing them with guys that were backups for p4 teams or starters from G5. Any simple "objective" analysis will show that as a loss. However, in the same way I think The Jet is underrated in their analysis, the incoming guys could be underrated too. The only thing that matters is how the team does this Fall.

I don't have perception bias. I just think it sucks that a player can play all season at Cal without ever being mentioned by an ESPN writer or talking head, but then when the same player transfers, he is all of a sudden trumpeted by these schmucks as "highly coveted".

You do.

What you're asking for is an ESPN writer or talking head to highlight a Cal player during the CFB season when everyone is playing.

The reason they're highlighting them now is because of the pool of players who are transferring they are coveted and high impact.

The group of players in comparison is totally different. I.e. one is all the QB's in all of CFB. The other is the group of QB's available and/or transferred.

Agree. All that matters is how the new guys and the team play this Fall.

Ott was a "bust" in 2024.

Mendoza was good in 2024 but Cal had to settle for too many FG's in the Red Zone in 2024. Was that Mendoza's fault - probably not. But in The game against Miami Mendoza overthrew a pass into the end zone to an open receiver late in the game. Cal had to settle for a FG. If the pass had been completed Cal could have won the game.

Jet was a bright spot for Cal in 2024.
