I was in Tampa Bay wearing a Cal shirt back in November and Gruden was at an event down there. He did a Q&A and got on the mic spotted me and said something like "We got a Golden Bear in the house, that is something I wasn't expecting to see in Tampa Florida."

He had such an insane amount of energy even at this random event. Some dad got on the Mic and told him that his son was a HS QB in the area and if he had any tips for his son. Gruden gave the dude his personal Cell number and told the dad to have his son give him a call. Despite a lot of mixed feelings about the guy from football fans, I left there with a pretty positive feeling about the guy.

Wow, outside of not knowing Oski's name, that was pretty impressive! Named just about every star Cal Football player over the past half century... and didn't appear to be reading off a teleprompter!

Every high school football player should watch this!

Well, since he did go back to Joe Kapp, I guess we're looking at the last 65 years. And as he is an NFL guy, I guess the players had to have played in the NFL, so maybe no Joe Roth.

I agree with others that this was awesome. Gruden's energy and knowledge of Cal was awesome too.

I went through most of the video wondering who coughed up a few thousand dollars to send him all that gear. It didn't even occur to me that the Cal athletics department might have done it. We've never had marketing chops like that before. Then it turned out it was from Ron Rivera. It's a whole new world. I'm smiling big time right now.

Bryan Anger got snubbed! Desmond Bishop and Brandon Mebane also warranted some Chuckie love, IMHO.

I can't recall the exact number, but when Jim Breech retired he was among the top 10 ALL TIME scorers in NFL history.

Marvin Jones deserves a shout out.

I am stunned that, despite his problematic history, we're so impressed by Gruden's knowledge of Cal football, even though he coached in the East Bay for many years and is good friends and a former Green Bay Packers colleague of Steve Mariucci.

I'm stunned because I'm younger than Gruden, a much bigger Cal fan, and could not have done that unboxing but even half as well because names and faces already escape me. The guy is a treasure.

Not to downplay his abilities, but it's been Gruden's job to be knowledgeable about a lot of players and schools, not just as a head coach but on Monday Night Football.

(Just like Rece Davis could automatically, off the top of his head, spout off stuff about Roy Riegels when discussing Cal football.)

It reminds me of, well, myself. I work in the world of entertainment. And my job requires me to be knowledgeable about intricate details about shows and movies. And it comes quite naturally to me after doing this for many years.

He's a good sport to admit that he totally blew it by passing over Rodgers after having spent a good deal of effort scouting him in person.

I remember Nick Harris came into our Daily Cal offices. And he was greeted like a rock star. That said a lot at the time.
