Wilcox's only win over the Beavers in Corvallis was back in 2018, 7 years ago. Other than Stanford, Oregon State is now far and away Cal's longest running continuous series.

I was there my son's last Beaver away game. Things have changed for the Beavers tremendously but folks seem to ignore that.

No doubt things have changed tremendously for OSU. But this is not the same Cal team that demolished a severely injured Beavers team last year 44-7. Cal will start a new OL (likely all 5) a new QB, a new TE, at least 1 and maybe 2 Wrs. A new DE/OLB in place of Carlton, a new ILB and 5 new starters at DB. A new punter, pk and long snapper. And this will all occur on the road. And they are breaking in a new DC and OC albeit the OC has a long track record and likely won't shrink in crucial moments.

I do think Cal has a better roster. But first games (especially on the road) are often tricky and sloppy. And despite how much the Beavers have changed the prognosticators have pegged them the favorite (3 pts) . That is likely due to being at home.

So sure OSU no longer is a P4 program. But few outside the Cal faithful feel the Bears have upgraded much if at all. In fact more feel Cal went backwards in terms of talent. And they lack experience at QB which can be a big difference maker.

I like the Bears to win, but I must say I am not overly confident they will do so. This is a crucially important game for Cal. It is as close to a must win as any opening game can be for Cal.

I see 3 new starters on the OL and an upgrade in the OL coach. Can the other 3 replacements be worse than last year's? Our new QB is mature, at least, and has shown game management ability with a potential star in the wings. Returning starter at WR and talented newcomers (who can/will block) may be all we need. We ought to be able to find at least one good RB out of the four and they're all bigger and stronger.

DL will be at least as good as last year, as will LBs. DBs are the concern with only one returnee (a good one). But, there's depth there, as there is throughout the D.

How in the world did that QB end up at OSU? There's more to that story. In any event, their OL is gonna have a time trying to protect him. Where else have they improved over last year? I don't see it.

Duke brought in a QB with a $4m a year NIL deal. He had to go somewhere.

This thread is hilarious....not because anyone is right or wrong, only just how we as fans are so eternally optimistic. We, as Beaver fans, see this as a must win game, and really, not to offend, I expect Beavs win this, hopefully fairly easily. My gut tells me OSU wins, but first game of season and all, who knows. With our schedule, I see two for sure losses....this isn't one of them. check out Bennyshouse for more... Hope to see some Cal fans at the game, should be a packed house....revenge on our mind for last year's debacle.
I'd probably mostly feel the same if I was an OSU fan; maybe not the "expect to win" but that it was a tossup at worst. From a Cal perspective this game is a must-win. Not because OSU is that bad but given their quality compared to our other opponents they're right on par with about half of them.

If we lose to you guys it means we're probably about .500 at best this year and that signal disaster for the coaching staff and trigger a rebuild. And if you win "fairly easily" then we're in for a hellish season. So yea, either team *could* win and either team you see as slight favorites I wouldn't fight you on it but from our perspective it's as make-or-break as a first game can be; again, that's our context and no disrespect to OSU

Yeah saying that Cal is a "must win" when we're at worst the 3rd or 4th best team on their schedule is not a serious statement.

The thing is, the beaver guy isn't even trolling, this is truly what he (and probably their fan base at large) believes.

I honestly don't know what happened to OSU fans, they used to be so likeable.

Getting left behind will do that, I guess, and we might experience this in the next realignment. But it's weird how the OSU fans direct so much of their resentment toward Cal. We only left when it was obvious we had to.

We were one of the 4 teams that got left behind and it took us at least a month (?) to find a new home. They act like we were one of the 8 others who had negotiated other options.

Someone should do a study on WSU and OSU fans and why one fan base became completely toxic while the other remained chill.

They are pretty similar programs. They are the somewhat forgotten "state" school in the shadows of their much more famous big brother. And they've had pretty decent recent success (up until realignment) considering their relative lack of resources.

And yet…their fans' reactions to realignment couldn't have been more different considering their inherent similarities.

As a guy who grew up in the PNW it's always been that way. Washington State fans are like Cal fans - have been through a lot of pain and have a great sense of humor.

There is definitely a faction of the OSU fanbase that is similar (several friends are OSU alumni) - but the Beavs do attract the local fans from the boonies that are angry about their personal lives and project it in their fandom. Godspeed to those going to Reser.

They have been decent recently but being in Corvallis becomes an issue in the realignment scenario, despite wins

Their rival UNC brought in Bill Belichick, so Duke boosters wanted an upgrade at the most important position, the guy they think was the best QB available. His contract will make him the highest paid college player. Murphy knew there really could not be open competition in that situation, the pressure to play the $4 million player would be too much. So he entered the Portal and schools like Michigan and Kentucky went after him hard, but he chose OSU because he trusted the coaches, he fit their system, he would be the clear starter and the $1.5 million in NIL was good enough.

He is a former California state champion and 11-3 as a starter in college, so he is used to winning, even if he is a "flawed" QB in that he is a big, strong armed pocket passer who is not a running threat. Hopefully we can put pressure on him and hopefully Brown (who we all assume is starting) turns out to be better. Hopefully Cal is better . We will see in only two weeks.

Regarding why OSU is so mad at us, I have a two-part theory:

1. They are particularly frustrated because they were experiencing success with their alum as coach, stadium remodel, things were rolling... and then it all comes crashing down.

2. Why blame us? It's like if you didn't get a date to the prom (even though you know darn well your coolness level is average at best) and you're frustrated and lashing out. You're not mad at the captain of the football team who's going with the hottest cheerleader, you're mad at the guy who you feel is about as cool as you but managed to get a so-so date anyway.

Hey gentlemen, sorry for late reply..... I enjoyed the colorful responses. . First off, Beaver fans aren't MAD at Cal.... The Bears are my second favorite team. I think many of us just think it didn't make sense for Cal and Stanford to go to the ACC economically, and yeah we wish you had stuck with us to start back up what could have been a more solid foundation of the conference. That said, I think this whole thing implodes in a year or two anyhow, and I think we all just need to stay relevant. Both Cal AND OSU.

Beavs have a solid coaching staff, and added a bunch more players, only losing a handful of critical ones from last season. Picked up some solid players in the portal. QB play will be vastly improved.... I admit I'm a little concerned with offensive line protecting him. My Cal friends and family though that I do communicate with seem pretty down on Cal's talent level. Most the Cal team that destroyed us last year is gone. I can't even think of the last time we lost to Cal at home....maybe when Aaron Rodgers was there????

I'm a fan, sure, so maybe full of it, but I know our fan base sees this as an ABSOLUTE must win. some are talking about a 10-2 season (schedule is not strong)..... one thing that hurt since I made the original post was we lost one of our top receivers to injury, Darius Clemons. So you catch a break there.

College football is a crap fest these days.. part of me wants to boycott it altogether, but sorry sap that I am, I'll be there. If any of you reasonable fans are making the trip up, I am connected to a couple kick ass tailgaters- send me a message and prolly meet and hook ya up. Cheers, go Beavs!

My only time at Reser was a "Sonny Dykes special" loss, 47-44 in 2016. So, 9 years ago, long before the realignment mess. Nothing but great vibes and hospitality from Beaver fans/tailgates pre-game. However, this was the last time I sat in anything but the Cal visitors seats anywhere else at road games. Once the game started the "vibe" for us as visiting team fans among OSU fans was decidedly "walking-on-eggshells" even back then, with confrontations just waiting to happen. Given the warm reception we experienced pre-game and that Beaverdreams offers, my feeling has always been that, during the game, this was the aforementioned "boonies" element, but admittedly a small and individual sampling. I probably will not make the trip down there this year but nevertheless, if we happen to win convincingly on their field, it being a "must-win" for them too, I wouldn't expect it to be very comfortable for Cal fans afterward.

Yep. Aaron Rodgers' last year at Cal was 2004.

Since then, Oregon State is 6-3 against Cal at Corvallis, with the Bears winning in:

2006: 41-13
2014: 45-31
2018: 49-7

6-4 for the Beavers against the Bears for the last 10 in Corvallis if you count 2004 with Aaron Rodgers, with Cal also winning 49-7 that year.

Not sure what Cal folks you talking to but most of us are very excited with the possibilities of our OL and the depth of our front seven on defense. We had one of of the worst OL last season yet manhandled the Beavs last season. Our OL is bigger and stronger and we all think much better coached this season. We didn't have an alpha edge rusher but now we have some promising candidates. Our IL group may be one of the best in the country by season's end. I think we will have a heavy advantage in the trenches. Sure the Beavs will be better than last years Beavs team, but there is a legit gap in the trenches

Shouldn't that make it more meaningful since they're free to go every year so each year the guys you have reaffirmed their commitment to you?

Like Jaydn Ott. He gave us hard work and highlights and got a Cal degree. I'm not gonna turn on him just because he left; maybe if someone did it in a really ****ty way but not like that. I wish it worked out better for both sides but he busted his ass for us, flipped back from a nikeU commitment, and stayed with us when he could have left more than once. Plus we thought he was gonna be gone after last season anyway, we just thought it was gonna be to the draft

Sure, describe it however you like. It may well be better this way.

But fans being dedicated to the players was more of a two-way street when players were almost guaranteed to stay at the same school the whole time they were in college. Now it's different.

He always used to say, "if you want to know who true Cal football fans, ask 'em to name 10 Cal qbs on the spot, no googling. I know I can, can you?

We are fans...we all say crazy things. OSU looks to be improved.....honestly, if the game was at Cal, I'd pick Cal to win, but being our opener in Corvallis, with so much talk by the players of wanting this win bad after what happened last year, I just have a hunch Beavs get it done.

Fair enough....we will see on Aug 30th. Cheers!!!!

Sorry to hear that....but I think this is largely true in most any stadium, esp with the younger fans. Autzen is by far the worst of any stadium around, even the Coliseum, which says a lot. I know down in Berkeley last year a few Cal fans let me have it. Whatever.....little do they know I've watched more Cal games in Memorial than they will in their lifetimes. I mean, please child, tell me how many here actually were AT the 82 Big Game? Granted I was 10 years old........but I was there.

FYI, I can vouch for the fact that Beaverdreams2 does like Cal, does have big-time Cal in his family and did grow up going to Cal games, before going to Oregon State. Respect.

Yes, your brother and I had a year overlap at Cal. Great guy. I'm fortunate to have known him.

BTW, Ducky23 is a Golden Bear, too. He gets his handle from Cal hoopster Randy Duck, I believe.

Appreciate your response but how could the Beaver fans be expecting a 10 win season? Where did you improve other than QB? Is your OL worse…or better thisbyear and why?

Our schedule is full of lousy teams.... Oregon, Texas Tech: losses. Every other game more than winnable. No Boise State this year. Btw, I'm not homer enough to expect a 10 win season..... we will lose a couple we shouldn't.... but hopefully 8-4 or so. With that schedule, anything less would be pretty disappointing.
