I like Harsin's playcalling.

We have a kicker.

I agree, though I hope we score TDs and don't need the FG kicker often.

I haven't seen an Offensive Line at Cal this composed for a decade. We had a commitment to run, we ran out the clock, our QB looks composed and knows where he wants to go with the ball. The running back room will get better but they consistently gained yards...that's such a huge development. So so much to look forward to, this is a young team, so it should get better.

Very few mistakes. Disciplined and prepared. Hats off to the staff. This was a pleasure to watch.

The Bears traveled well, were prepared and looked organized. Few penalties - especially those awful OL procedure calls we had last season. JKS is the real deal as we were told. Some of those WR "drops" had defensive hands in there - tough. OL great protection as was noted. Running game was iffy - do we have a breakaway back? - few runs got past the second level. Play calling in the 2nd half seemed worthy considering the lead and the way the D was playing. Beavers battled back, but I liked the way the game ended - interception and nice clean FG. All good. Let's see a wild home opener. Texas State 52-27 Eastern Michigan. Ucla gutted by Utah and USC won against a JV team. Home opener time, perfect!

Was either that or run a play on 4th down. May as well get the kicker some reps.

Also, if we run a play or kneel on it the clock stops and we give the ball back. We weren't in danger of losing but there's just no advantage there. It's not like we did something disrespectful like a halfback pass to an eligible OT for a TD. Kicking the FG to seal it and run a couple seconds was really the only call there

Right, kneeling is pointless and trying to score a TD would look like running it up. Just kick it.

It was a nice game. On the road; quality opponent (i.e. Cal didn't play LIU at home) ; and we got to see that the Bears have some real potential, but there are areas where we must improve.

Speaking of areas where we must improve, can someone please get Justin Allegri to get in the habit of saying "the Cal 35" or "the Beavers 35?"

Remains to be seen how good Oregon State will be, but they are basically Mountain West level. Going on the road in the MW is not necessarily easy (as Stanford found out). Cal should win but the trap can be set there. The team made sure it was in little doubt from the first quarter on.

Were we? I feel like they must've downplayed his performance through camp. We all knew about the arm talent but his pose, ball placement, and ability to go through progressions is unheard of for a true freshmen. There were round 1 QB type highlights last night, even on the incomplete passes. The competition must not have been even close.

The interview Cal athletics put up from ACC Media Days was with Brown. One of the depth charts the coaches put out had Brown #1, while in person observers said Brown was not showing well and might be #3.

The secondary is starting a Senior and a RS Senior in Austin and Masses on the outside at CB. The starting NB is a RS Junior in Cam Sidney, Safety Isaiah Crosby is a RS Senior with his running mate Aidan Manutai a true Freshman. Manutai's primary backup is Dru Polidore a RS Senior.

So while the DBs are new, Manutai is the only player that's not highly experienced

Uh this young man is a STUD. I was floored by his performance. And the team overall I was like, whuh? 49 yard FG to close with pts before half? Early lead, true frosh qb. True frosh qb goes 6 for 6 to start. Antithetical Wilcox. I'm not looking this gift horse in the mouth. Hooray for our Golden Bears!

I was one of the guys at Spring game who thought Brown was #3 and JKS was #1.

It does feel like as concernedparent suggests though that maybe coaches were downplaying. Devin Brown does seem to be a good QB. No need to feed a bunch of rumors and negativity against Brown prematurely. We may also need him later this season or next season.

As we know, there's a bunch of vultures here in the boards that will take any comment and blow it up.

By the way, just call me Nostradamus, lol. I also called the WR drops even from back then:

"Finally, I do feel a bit of concern about WR & TE drops. Definitely feel like they need to work on hands more."

If we can get that skill for the offensive line, we'll win games. Btw, also shows if you get an offensive line coach that can build a winning group, you PAY DE MAN to keep them, because that seems to be the most challenging position group to fill for coaching. How many bad line coaches have we went thru and now it seems like this one works.

I've been arguing for playing Hawaii regularly and hiring Polynesian OL and DL coaches and making that part of our identity, as many of our West Coast competitors have, for decades. It is one of our potential comparative advantages and natural recruiting areas. I think that is part of Anae's success, especially in 2026 recruiting, and I am glad to see it.

Keep going west - I mean east. Who is recruiting there?

A Samoan male is 56 times more likely to play in the NFL than a non-Samoan American male, representing an extraordinary overrepresentation compared to their population size.

POPULATIONS:
Hawaii: 1,440,196
Fiji: 936,376
Solomon Islands: 740,425
Wallis and Fortuna: 11,502
.... This could possibly make them the heaviest territory on average, only to be challenged by other Polynesian nations and territories. As for average height, they're also a very tall group of people...

Oregon State was much improved over last year. Murphy (?) at QB was very accurate and made some good plays. The Cal D shut him down pretty well. I hope that OSU does well.

I agree with the idea, but Cal would only get the TV rights to the Cal home games. Fortunately, Thanksgiving weekend typically has more games due to some games shifting to Black Friday, so it should be easier to get a broadcast.

I could see a Cal Hawaii game be a mainstay of the late night windows.
