AI Overview

Jared Goff's first game as a Cal player was on August 31, 2013, against the No. 22 Northwestern Wildcats, where he became the first true freshman to start a season opener for the Golden Bears. Despite a 44-30 loss, he threw for 450 yards and two touchdowns, setting two school records in a game where he set many other records for a first-year starter.

Trumpanzee posts nonsense takes that veer from one side of the argument to the other. He posted extremely negative stuff about Cal then suddenly for the last week, he's been Cal's biggest cheerleader. While he might have been fooled by AI, it's also quite possible he's deliberately trolling us.

My bad, I trusted the "fake" news. Oregon bear I'm trolling no one. I'm always happy to be proven wrong because I do take the extreme side that most fair weather fans want to take but are too scared to be offended by bullies like you. I'm very optimistic (not pessimistic) based off of what I watched tonight. I was the first time I saw Wilcox looking like he needed an enema after the game.

20-30 would be 66.6%, would it not?

I think you need to be decently read on the subject before you rely on it. If you are, the errors, if any, jump out at you. You should also peruse the few sources they list at the end of the Overview.

Sagapolutele looked like he had more time to throw than Goff. Goff had to get rid of the ball very quickly.

Sagapolutele looks like a great one based on that game. The odds are he won't have as good a career as Goff……and yes, he may have a much better one. He appeared to be the full package vs the Beavers.

Oh, didn't think about that. It's just a Twitter image, not a link to the site, so hopefully okay.

Should only be improved after next week. Great set up for a national audience against Minnesota.

Goff is a Cal legend and JKS took his first step towards the same status. It is worth noting that JKS is operating within a system that will produce less eye popping statistics but will more likely result in winning football

Bruh. How do you figure? Harsin had like a top 1 or top 2 offense for like 3 years at Boise State, as OC his teams averaged over 40 points.

Rolovich also had a top 10 offense as an OC at Hawaii although less at Nevada.

Once these guys figure it out, I think we're gonna see a high octane offense.

Also remember, as some posters pointed out, there was very little WR separation this game. Like maybe 1 yard of separation if that for our guys. Once we get our speed guys in, watch out! With JKS accuracy and arm strength, I think we're gonna smoke some teams pretty hard.

I love what I saw from the offense and I don't doubt we are going to score points but Goff was in a high tempo air raid offense. He attempted 64 passes in his first game. I've heard Harsin wants to key things off power run. My point about the likely statistical differences stands

Only because he won't be playing in the Sonny Dykes/Tony Franklin 'nuclear drop 50' offense.

What do you think we're waiting on with our "speed guys"? Maybe we're keeping 'em out of the scouting reports?

Agreed.

Our RBs had 100 yards in 27 attempts or 3.7 YPC.
Not exactly dominant especially when Sagapolutele was killing them deep. I think it was largely a return to the Wilcox "build the lead through the air then turn turtle to try to milk it until the end" strategy we have always seen. The big difference was Oregon State is not Miami, we gave them chances to get back in it and they couldn't capitalize.

The good news is Wilcox's strategy worked, the bad news is it worked, only reinforcing Wilcox's belief that it is the "right" strategy. This is a game where we could have just blown them out, but I doubt we will see that under Wilcox unless via the running game, which so far, does not look likely. Sagapolutele will get his big numbers in games against high scoring offenses where Harsin needs to keep throwing to keep up. They will be epic, but I think given our schedule we will again have lots of low scoring close games because that is what Wilcox likes and Harsin will deliver.

Texas Southern will be an outlier.

I assume we're just playing our best WRs... I hope the speed guys get out there and get more separation than we got vs. OSU. Clearly, an extra yard or two would've helped in some (all?) of the drops, especially the one vs. Kyion, where the DB got his hand in there.

We probably also need less separation deep since JKS is so accurate... but then WRs gonna have to deal with some contact and a little bit of extra difficulty pulling it in. All I'm saying is more separation = higher % catch.

So whether by play design (on the coaches), or speed, or whatever, I think/hope we'll figure it out.

Ahh I gotcha. I just realized you were comparing vs. Goff/TFS. I thought you were talking about the offense generally. Too many threads. I hear you. I'm still optimistic, though, that we'll heat up the passing.

Let'em cook! Lol.

Cal also "had chances" to 'drop 40+' and didn't
capitalize (dropped catchable passes that would have either been TDs or 'set up' TDs deep in OSU territory).

Right. Last year Cal beat Oregon State 44-7 and Mendoza completed 75% for 364 yards 2 TDs and no INT. Zero sacks. Sagapolutele's numbers would have been even better than that and we would have easily "dropped 40" again but for all the drops.

It remains to be seen if Oregon State is better than last year as "the experts" predicted. We are more interested in Cal. Sagapolutele is an upgrade, absolutely. We will definitely be better with better WR and RB play than we saw against OSU. Texas Southern will not tell us much. Hopefully we pad our stats.

The big test will be the following week against Minnesota. That will tell us how good we are. Beat Minnesota and it could be a great season.
