Haven't looked at the NCAAF schedules for that week, but the stars might be lining up if UNC does their part. You know that ESPN wants it.

It's a Friday night game so won't be possible

only other possibility SMU @ Cal if we keep doing our own thing. but its rivarly week. Oregon Washington, USC UCLA, Michigan Ohio State, alamba auburn

Heh, I did preface that post with the fact that I hadn't looked at the schedule for that week.
This being said, if we do have the kind of season we are capable of, there is no question we would have been a prime Gameday candidate for the UNC game had it been held on Saturday, you know their crew had a blast last year and the hype about JKS would be the cherry on top, star power that we didn't have last year.

As someone mentioned it's Friday so not gonna happen.
Duke is the one that's a possibility.
The 3 in between now and then are #12 Illinois; Tulane; and NC state.
If they run the table and we run the table you'd realistically be looking at #10-15 4-0 Duke against #15-#20 5-0 Bears.
I think this is a very real possibility. Duke looks alright with Mensah and he'll he playing against his former Tulane team in a few weeks who should be ranked next week.
There's really nothing on the schedule that week that pops either other than Clemson at unc but with Clemson losing to the lsu fighting corn dogs that game doesn't have the luster it would have.
And as an added bonus. October 5th fleet week starts.

Very little is penciled in on ESPN's schedule besides weeknight games after the first few weeks. They like to keep their options open, precisely because they don't know which games will be good for GameDay.
I suspect a Cal GameDay is very unlikely for the second year in a row unless we have a true miracle season that demands it. If we do, the SMU game is a possibility too (they could be a conference contender).
The SMU game is not likely to be a Gameday candidate because it is in a week with rivalry games like Auburn-Bama and Florida-Fl. State, OhioSt-Michigan just to name a few.
As well SMU is playing at Clemson and Miami this season, don't think they will be in the ACC title picture going into our game.

I would still put SMU as a long shot for GameDay, but if both teams are contenders late in the year it's possible. You don't know how the rest of the season will play out.
Otherwise, it's as you say: Cal's soft schedule likely means there won't be a strong enough marquee matchup to entice them. I guess that Duke week is probably the best of the remote possibilities.
I just don't see it happening this year, because what is the selling point of Duke on the road as a marque game?

It's a pretty remote chance, but if both teams go undefeated maybe.
That said, given Florida State's performance in week one, I'd put their game vs. Miami that day as a leading contender to host GameDay. Texas-Florida also plays that week.

Based on this weekend I'd guess Miami vs Florida State on that weekend is more likely

Looked pretty good on top, with FSU and Miami improved. Clemson is still in the mix. Not sure about Louisville or SMU
