Hello Golden Bears!

Just a Golden Gopher wishing your team good luck on the field as well as good luck with the Gold Out.

The comments on your board on this upcoming Gold Out are pretty similar to posts we had on our home GopherHole site for past attempts at Gold Outs, Maroon Outs, and Stripe Outs. Participation was historically dismal, especially for the Gold Outs because maroon-colored apparel dominated the sportswear market.

However, the Sports powers at be started a run at them again here recently and participation has been pretty good of late, even for Gold Outs. Pretty much everyone has at least one gold colored item that can work for a warm weather game. It actually looks pretty good on TV plus being in the stands.

Anywho just dropping by to say this should be a good match-up with most Gophers making the trip wearing Maroon so it will be clear who's for who in this contest.

Looking forward to the game! Great site too!

Finally, we say "Ski U Mah" (sky-you-ma), which is allegedly a derivative of a Sioux war chant that means "Go Gophers!" We also say "Row The Boat" with Coach PJ Fleck at the helm. Have a great week as we get to gameday. BilldGopher.

Welcome, Billd! Are you coming to the game, or are you gonna watch it on TV?

We are, historically, pretty cool to visitors (except some rival schools that have earned our enmity), so I hope and expect that visiting Gophers will have a good time Saturday (except for what I hope to be the final score).

Looks like a fairly evenly matched non-conference game; I love these! Encourage other Gophers to drop by Bear Insider this week and share their Gopher Wisdom!

Go Bears!!!

Thanks Big C. Nope, just a couch Gopher for this one myself but looking forward to it.

Guessing there will be a decent smattering of Gophers in attendance and I'm sure they'll feel welcome.

We have in-conference neighbors to the east and south that are much less pleasant to visitors. No worries for that with this one.

Serious question because curious minds want to know... What is the point of a Gold Out?

Especially when the Golden Bears are playing the GOLDEN Gophers.

It's an annual exercise where the university puts the absolute minimum effort into increasing fan enthusiasm before throwing up their hands and saying "This is just too hard."

No matter how many times it fails, they'll keep trotting this out every few years when people forget how the most recent effort failed.

Bill - welcome!

Amusing story from the 2006 game, where i was a student in a fraternity. Being an engineering student, I put that Cal education to use and made a 3 story beer bong. Early in the morning a few Minnesota fans come up the street... elderly ones, definitely 80+. One was particularly bemused by the contraption, and after a little coaxing, rips one. Cheers abound and everyone goes their merry way.

Not that big a deal, except... apparently the guy supposedly had a weekly radio show with John Madden. And spoke at length the following Monday about the "beer drinking contraption" he had experienced that morning. The fact that John Madden was talking about my beer bong to a national audience made 22 year old me very proud.

Side note - if you have any pull at gopherhole.com could you have them approve my account already? I've been waiting a week... even put in the effort and looked up your 2004 womens basketball coach (the security question) and everything!

Exactly. It's a dumb idea, especially for a night game. I mean, how many folks have gold or yellow jackets or sweaters. Temperatures are likely to be in the low 60s for much of the game.

I've always loved the idea, but the fact is that it is extremely unlikely to work unless they actually hand out 30,000 gold/yellow t-shirts or ponchos at the gate. In today's CFB that is pretty much chump change (i mean, I would bet Cal spent considerably more on the billboards around the bay last week... not that those were bad, they were excellent, thanks sebasta!)

Scaled down, I think a gold student section would pop like crazy, even (perhaps especially) if the rest of the stadium wore their usual blue attire. The whole idea is that lighter colors (yellow, red, orange) pop on TV and make the scene that much more vivid and intense.

I want Cal to give it one honest-to-goodness shot, and if it genuinely sucks, I'll admit defeat and never mention it again. I'm fairly sure it won't suck. What does suck is when the effort behind it is limited to a couple emails to alumni. That usually results in a few hundred people wearing clothes they don't really like and feeling like chumps when no one else does it.

Personally I'm trying to go and will have a yellow cal t-shirt under my blue polo. If necessary, the polo can come off.

Let the team in on it: Good time to unleash the gold jerseys! I'm not usually a huge fan of those, but night game, gold out, it'd all come together!

Brilliant marketing

Gold out against a team that also wears Gold

A true gold out

Yeah, when planning this, first thing you do is look at the opponent's colors, to decide whether to go gold or blue.

And then the jackets for a night game would also be a factor.

Oh well, as others have mentioned, we're trying stuff...

Well they have tried Gold Out for football games but super weak because there was really no marketing conviction and it looks to be the same this time. You know I have been a proponent, and I would always be a team player and wear gold, but I've given up on this concept unless they hand out the shirts to everyone, which they have never done for football (hoops yes and that's why it worked). As for gold out against a team that also wears gold, I think the cheat code is that we co-opt their fans too so it looks like more gold out sections lol.

Yeah, my issues are:

A "fill in color here" - Out. only works if you fill the stadium with people to wear that color. It's awesome when you have a full stadium and everyone participates, but I don't think we are there on the first requirement and even less so on the second.

I will continually argue that while I acknowledge that Gold is the more striking color for the purpose, blue is going to get a much higher participation rate and therefor would work much better.

To your point about marketing conviction, it feels to me like the Gold out thing is just an easy way to say you are doing something without really doing anything. It is extremely easy to send out an email and a press release saying "Hey everyone! Wear Gold this week!" You know full well that this level of effort won't work. If you actually want to pull off a Gold out, you have to do a lot more. They don't. For that reason, no, I'm not going to credit them with doing something.

What I would prefer to see is a giveaway to the students of reversible T-shirts with a campaign to wear the blue side if you sit on a blue seat and the gold side if you sit on a gold seat. I think the students could achieve that and you could have every game with the TV facing a Big C in the stands. Essentially, stationary card tricks. (this was actually what Cal did in the old, old, old days to create the card trick concept. The "100 Years of Blve and Gold" book had a picture of the rooting section wearing caps to create that effect.

Love this idea about the reversible shirts for the student section.

Yah I don't see any follow up on the Gold Out by Cal marketing. It's gonna pretty much look like any other game.

I guess I've been away from California too long. You really need a jacket or sweatshirt at a football game when it's in the 60s? I'm sitting on my patio right now in a Tshirt drinking a beer and it's 62. Perfectly comfortable.

Californians being weather weenies isn't a new thing. But realistically it could be a bit brisk in the 2nd half.

Regardless, if you're coming to the game, I'd suggest not only wearing gold/yellow, but bringing an extra gold/yellow shirt, hat, jacket or scarf in case someone near you could use it.

1. "any color"-Outs were repeated dismal failures at MN for many years. They never worked. Then the 2019 season happened, specifically 8-0 Penn State vs 8-0 MN and people got really pumped about the team. A "Maroon out" was planned and I figured it would be more of the same, especially because it was a November game and nobody has maroon coats. But, mostly due to the buzz around the game, the Maroon out actually worked and since then Maroon outs, gold outs, and stripe outs have actually worked. Given the stoic, independent nature of Minnesotans, I figured any color-out game would never work, but 2019 proved me wrong. I wish the Gophers could provide the buzz for you that Penn State did for us back in 2019.

2. I get a kick out of American regional differences. Minnesotans are famous for breaking out their shorts to wear when the weather temps reach the 50's in March. I have seen several comments here about the gold-out being in question because nobody has gold jackets and the cooler 60 degree weather will cause the gold out to be nullified with jackets. A night game at MN in the 60's would see about 10% of fans in jackets, 15% in sweatshirts, and 75% in tshirts, with the pants to shorts ratio being about 60/40. I'm pretty sure we are weirdly an outlier that way.

3. There is an article in the Minneapolis StarTribune today about the time difference and west coast travel for team and fans and regarding MN fan attendance it says the Gophers' game at UCLA last season "drew an estimated 15,000 to 16,000 Minnesota fans to the Rose Bowl. Saturday's game at Cal won't lure as many Minnesotans to the Bay Area as UCLA did to Pasadena, but they're still expecting 5,000 to 7,000 [MN] fans to be in attendance."

My roommate and I were the ones who convinced Cal athletics that we should have a Gold Out but that was just for MBB back when we were students ~15 years ago working with the department in an unofficial capacity (by choice).

At first, they didn't give away gold shirts IIRC, which we thought was an odd decision. But once they started giving away the gold shirts, those Gold Outs started to really pop in Haas (at least until Cuonzo left and the program started its nosedive).

Much easier to achieve for basketball though. Hopefully, this football Gold Out will be a success!
