Yep woke us up. Near Rose and Shattuck. I thought it lasted only a couple of seconds. But since I was asleep when it hit, how can I be sure? 2:56 a.m. No damage.

Public service announcement for people to consider downloading the MyShake app if you haven't done so already. It's supposed to send you an alert when an earthquake is detected, and you are in an area where shaking is expected. It can give you seconds or maybe even tens of seconds of advanced notice (depending on your distance from the epicenter), which can potentially give you enough time to brace yourself (mentally and physically).

We live in earthquake country in California, let's all be safe using whatever tools and technology is available.

I will have to check if my seat shifted inside CMS when I'm there for the Duke game… Lol

If you live right on top of the quake, the duck and cover warning can be amusing. It came a few seconds after the shake. When the Really Big One comes, and you are some miles away from the epicenter, the warning could save your family's lives.

I took these photos of the Cypress Structure after Loma Prieta:

My 50-yard line seat is now a 40-yard line seat! Do I get a refund?

Seriously though I was up and getting ready for work (in Oakland) and I had to clean up some glass and stuff that broke. Every car in my neighborhood on the street was going off too. Luckily my dogs were just chilling, I'm bracing myself for the next big one though

I remember it well. I was still living there at the time. I was at Lake Merced, waiting for a friend to run with around the lake. The quake knocked me down.

We ended up running the Ocean Beach cement path. Never saw so many folks outside, and the amount of hard liquor bottles with them.

And then driving back home to Daly City, all the traffic lights out, very surreal.

At least for me, I tend to freeze up a bit in situations like this, so what I would recommend is that people have a plan as to what they would do if they had 5 seconds notice. Our house is on a bit of a slope, so what we would do is get away from the "downhill" side (in our house, that is where the chimney is, too) and get to the uphill side... and duck and cover.

Also, every family member should have shoes near their bed (broken glass) and flashlights.

Your roof collapsing on you is unlikely. More likely and dangerous is leaking gas and downed power lines.

This is a great time for families to review their emergency procedures!

I was getting ready to watch game 3 of the World Series when Loma Prieta hit. Ran outside and saw the street moving up and down from the waves propagating underneath. It looked like a sheet of paper. Scary day…

The epicenter was right at my kid's apartment at Cal for a year!

I showed her the quake map and she chuckled - from 100 miles away!!!!

Good pics Bearister. Wow, what a crazy day. And for it to happen with the Bay Series being played. What are the chances?!!!!

I was in the RSF for both Loma Prieta AND the Oakland Hills Firestorm.

I should probably stay away from that place! (Not that I haven't anyway.)

At least October is only cursed for Call football now. 1993 as a kid I was very very worried when September ended.

I knew somebody who died in there. Very sad. Also where that heroic doctor (I think from Children's Hospital) got in there to cut through a deceased person to get at and extract a kid who was trapped in the back of a crushed car. A lot of tragedy and heroism going on in there.

I remember driving through Oakland directly after the quake, with all the traffic lights out, but homeless dudes out directing traffic like bosses. Surreal post-apocalyptic vibe, but heartening.
