Is Oski Village Worth Visiting?

I am a season ticket holder and catch the shuttle on Channing to get to Memorial Stadium and then walk to Maxwell Field for the tailgate. Is it worth visiting Oski Village? At my age, I am not able to get around like I use to, but I am curious about Oski Village. What are the attractions there?

If you like armed police officers with assault rifles staring at you, yes! Thanks, Chancellor Lyons. I feel safe.

Okay, that deserves a little more background info. Having never been to one, what's the deal? Is this to keep the crowd from rushing the food vendors?

This feels like some sort of alternate reality take on what is a pretty fun space. I've never seen a single armed anything at the village and I've visited it for both home games. What I have seen is a giant screen television (honestly bigger than the minitron at Memorial) showing other football games. I have seen the Chancellor dancing with Oski on the stage. I've seen live music and I have seen a tent occupied by the Calgorithm guys.

Oh and a lot of bounce houses and play areas for kids.

Yeah, but OTHER THAN THAT it's a total hellscape.

I haven't been but I just googled I and it sounds cool. How is the beer garden - is there seating? Shade? Good beer? Pricing?

I was enjoying it with my daughter but there were two armed ucpd cops there for the Minnesota game on the northwest corner of the Glade. They were nice, but it was completely unnecessary. I mean fully decked out like riot police from head to toe with semiautomatic rifles in hand. I asked them why this was necessary and they said it was just to keep us safe. There were two more at Memoral stadium guarding the Tunnel. The experience, sans that, was good. Only one food vendor serving brisket and a drink vendor and Pepsi popup tent. Fun house stuff for the kids. That was cool, but we did not like the military style police. I get that someone set a ucpd cop car on fire awhile back when they were cracking down on students for protesting, but it doesn't necessitate this. It was disappointing. Had a feeling this was coming when we hired the head of us capitol police to run campus police.

It's been an open secret for years that Radical leftists fire off artillery from Tightwad Hill during football games. The UCPD tactical units are needed to protect and defend against the terrorists.

Is there a webpage or social media account that lists which food vendors will be at Oski's Village each game? An email a week before the first game listed food trucks for the village, but tge wrong trucks were named and I missed one of my favorite trucks. I usually take the free shuttle from West Circle , which passes Oski's Village, but doesn't stop there. They should add a stop there

We ran past it on the way to the Minnesota game (late thanks to a youth soccer game) - wish we would have had time to hang out! I noted the (obviously) gorgeous setting, space for kids to run and play (inflatables and jump houses as well), but also SEATING!! Quite a number of picnic tables with umbrellas. I would definitely take both my young family and my Old Blue parents here to pre-game!

Given the current political climate, seems like a high-profile liberal school like Berkeley would be a juicy soft target.

Oski Village has potential. Pluses are the kids jump houses, the large screen, and the music (band or DJ)

It has food trucks and rentable tents for groups, and because it's on campus has a lot more atmosphere than Tailgate Town. For the Minnesota game they had the Pepsi Challenge which was cool. There were two small sponsor booths on the side. Hopefully that expands too.

It would have been great if they moved the Cal Athletic Fund tailgate there too, but Memorial Glade probably isn't big enough, especially as Oski Village grows. Right now, I don't think many people even know about it. I hope they will add more picnic tables or other places to sit.

I am really hopeful this can grow in size and activities as it's got potential.

Check it out.

You triggered a memory of a photo I took at Super Bowl City in 2016 in SF (on the Embarcadero). This officer was pretty geared up. He had a muzzle suppressor on his assault rifle:

People can joke but it's an extreme danger nowadays that our offense is improving with a real QB. It used to be that we could go almost the entire season with no artillery fire but now it's every game at home. We need a robust military response on standby to combat it

genuine question. How come we don't have a scene like the Grove? Obviously, that's the gold standard, but why is that we don't have a tailgating option AT ALL before games, considering that we have a on campus stadium and there are plenty of lawns and grass area? Blind to the history of it if someone can shed a light

Aren't many tailgates on large parking lots so people can pull up with trucks/SUV and pitch a tent, bring in food, etc?

I don't think Cal has a property like that

Unfortunately, the Oski fandom has split into two different factions: the peace-loving Oskies and the agressive Oskettes.

The armed police are there to ensure that a gang war doesn't break out.

As a genuine answer, that's exactly what Oski Village is trying to do. Anyone can rent a tent there. The company will set up and take down the tent and I think even provide the food.

There's probably only a half dozen or so now but at some point the hope is you'd have 100 tents being rented out. We are two games into the experiment and most of the tents are being donated. Cal gave one to the Calgorithm group for example. The black bear group has been given another.

We'll see if it catches on.

Here's a link for more information, including information about tent rental: Oski's Village

I'm gonna at least check out the beer garden. Has anyone been? Is there seating?

Horrible - planned a whole thing with kids and there were no food trucks so no food for them and then the kids zone was the worst thing in the world. A place to throw a football through a hole but they didn't have a ball!

So NO - Oski's village is not worth it

The last time I was there, it didn't seem like the food trucks were getting much traffic. I wonder if they pulled out this week because it wasn't worth them time anymore, and the organizers couldn't find a replacement in time.
