I hope that Moraga and others can push past this coach speak. I mean what I saw Saturday was some key talent gaps. I don't know how that reflects "Maturity". We don't have guys that are scary rushers so their QB had a LOT of time (at least in the 2nd guarter). We have two tackles who are sub p4 talent....especially in respect to footspeed. Maybe it is true for some of the secondary and LB play. And I am sure this will not be addressed during the middle of the season both for smart strategic reasons and also the bad look of throwing players under the bus.
If we were doing dumb things out there (Personal Fouls, Taunting, missing substitutions, etc.) then sure. It would be a team that has to grow up.. If we were over pursuing and getting burned by leaving our rushing lanes, sure. But that isn't what I saw on Saturday but...the flip side being I am not a HC and there may be subtle things I am missing.

Should he said that the players are not good enough? Should he say he is not a good enough coach? Even though both may be true, since there is nothing to be done about these problems, I don't think he should point them out. So he says something like we are not playing up to our abilities. He frames it as immaturity. Sounds fine to me.

No he shouldn't. But typical "not saying anything coach speak" would be
":Clearly we were not prepared enough and that starts with the staff. We have got to work harder to put our players in position to practice harder to be able to respond as teams make adjustments. THat is on us and we take full responsibility. Next question."
It is the "we are not a mature football team" which has been sorta scratching my head as to what he means and how that is showing in specific ways on the field.

I said to CalBearKen as we were leaving, and prior to the radio interview, that I don't want to hear "we (coaches) have to do better". In Justin's defense, that's what he usually says, putting most of the weight on his and the staff's shoulders (rightfully so). This time he didn't say that. And I'm not sure he's totally wrong about the players......not entirely anyway. I mentioned to CBK that the team had NO fire on the sidelines. Neither the coaches, nor the players. So, when I got home yesterday I (painfully) watched my recording of the game. There was a NOTICEABLE difference between the action on the sidelines. The Duke team was animated, passionate, and visibly into the game. The Cal sideline was anything but. No fire, no yelling, no visible passion.....just nothing. Now I'm well aware a team is a reflection of their coach. But Tom Landry and Bill Walsh (as examples) had a very low key approach, and their players performed. So I think it comes down to desire. Duke clearly wanted this game. And they showed it, both on the field, and on the sidelines. Cal didn't have the same intensity. A coach can only do so much. They're not on the field. So at some point, the players have to put it on themselves to get each other fired up and into the game. I'm not dismissing Justin and the staff at all. I'm just saying that the players also have some responsibility in holding each other accountable and helping each other rise to the occasion. And I'm not seeing that. So yes, I do think this team has some immaturity. That's not to let the coaches off the hook at all. It's just pointing out that both players and coaches have some responsibility about what I'm seeing (or not seeing). This team can be very competitive if it wants to. I just wonder if it really does want to.

When the team is immature and lacks focus, it is 100% on the coach. This isn't 8 year olds playing soccer...

JKS is an amazing talent. He may even lean into his talents a bit too much sometimes with a little bit of a gunslinger attitude with an arm that typically backs it up.
But he's a freshman. His first pic was an ill advised throw. We stacked 3 receivers to one side against a single high safety and....threw it directly to where the safety was. That's a learning moment but didn't seal the game either way.
Next offensive pass was a throw down the sideline on what was a free play after Duke jumped offsides. It was intercepted too.
Next two plays were sacks as JKS was indecisive about where to throw. He was seeing ghosts on defense that weren't there after back to back interceptions, even if one was called back. He was throwing it at receivers feet on screens to avoid a potential interception. He had the yips.
Again, he's a freshman. That happens and these are learning experiences. You know whose job it is to pull him out of it? The coaching staff. Especially after the debacle against SDSU we HAD to have a plan on what to do when things start rolling against our QB. Short passes, quick routes, and easy outlets. You also need someone coaching him up getting him back into the right head space.
None of that happened. Instead we got to sit there and watch JKS flounder. If you can't help pull him out of the funk you have to at least know when its time to replace him.
It was painful watching JKS get left out to dry like that. Is it a learning moment? Sure. Will it pay dividends in the long run? Yeah... but he was stuck alone out there and really could have used some help.
And then to have the audacity to blame the players for being "immature" when you did absolutely nothing to help them? Ugh.

I started a thread on this after the SDSU game. You can tell what kind of day it will be by Wilcox's demeanor on the sidelines. For Minnesota he was all over the sideline, running around, getting in the refs ears. That correlated to a team playing fired up and play calling that was more dynamic and took more risks. I knew by looking at him we were going to have a good day and that was by far our best performance.
He's good for that once or twice a year.
The other ten games he stands there glassy eyed with one arm around his waste, the other hand fidgeting with his face the whole time. Completely disengaged emotionally. He looks like Charlie Brown outside the principal's office because his tummy hurts. The team lacks energy and the playcalling is ridiculously conservative.
I posited that if he came out passionate every game we would be a good team. Not conference title good, but play exciting ball and be good for 8-9 wins a year.

Watch the first minute after half time, we were up and in the second half had relinquished the lead but the game wasn't over. Watch our sideline then watch Dukes. with the whole half of play ahead they are jumping up and down, as if doing the "this is Bear Territory" celebration while our bench was doing nothing. I knew we were about to get blown out and went to get on my boat. (I invited Wilcon but he didn't trust me). I didnt need to see the second half.
