Post-Game Thoughts: UVA

Another loss, another game that makes you look at this team and think it probably is the worst of the Wilcox era.

I think we're all pretty deflated at the moment. Looking forward to someone posting "We only lost by 10 to a top-15 team!" I think I'll go into psychosis when that happens.

Anyways, some thoughts, high-level because I just can't bear to really go through these games fully anymore:

- The same mistakes continue to plague us. How we cannot snap the ball correctly or have guys hold onto balls that hit them in the hands or just generally play common sense football is beyond me

- run defense, tackling, etc etc I don't need to list the same problems because it's been consistent all year. No improvement in too many facets of the game

- This was clearly not a juggernaut UVA team. The record is clearly buoyed by a really light schedule (could've been us...) and definitely beatable. I think it is clear to me, that this is by far the worst roster / team we've had in the Wilcox era. The stats bear that out (ESPN FPI, e.g.) but after 9 weeks of this I think I just have to come out and say that it is so disappointing that we have had our worst team by far, coincide with perhaps the easiest football schedule in a half century. Truly unfortunate.

- The fans have clearly started to check out a bit. The attendance wasn't putrid in several parts of the stadium but the combination of time + halloween for students, as well as the mounting losses are no good. Lucky for us we're away next week otherwise we might've been looking at numbers in the 20k territory.

I just don't care to get too much more into than that. The bright side is that the game ended earlier this week so I have time to go on with my day and do other things rather than go to bed disappointed.

Looking ahead... not sure if there's any win left. I am praying we beat Stanford but even that seems dubious. How pathetic would it be to miss a bowl with one of the easiest schedules in Cal history?

That is it. People were too focused on the cost of moving on from Wilcox instead of the cost of NOT moving on from Wilcox.

I am not sure what the second half was like in the stadium. My kids cannot tolerate a full game.

They like the band, the game, but the incessant PA noise and no fan-involved cheering really makes it miserable for them.

So I left.

Just such a ****ty in-stadium experience. So bad. Effectively zero fan involvement. Even the "cheers" are basically one dimwit moron yelling into a mic that is 20db louder than the fans.

Honestly, I would LOVE any actually statistically significant data that shows this bull**** helps bring in fans. Or helps the team perform. Or some ****ing thing.

Sorry, just really pissed off that my kids love game day, but despise being in the stadium. They can't even do a cross stadium go bears properly. There is almost no fan involvement at all.

I know donors threw a bunch of money into the PA system and think it's really good, but that **** ruined the game experience. Period.

u know why we hv the worst team by far?

wilcox is not a strategist. he cant coach. he cant recruit. he cant attract good coordinators.

so when the recruits that came via other regime ran out, when the program is finally wholly wilcox's. when everything has his finger print on it. its non coeincidentally the worst version we hv ever seen. his incompetence has seeped into every facet of cal football and he unraveled any good that we ever had

I can handle losing if I felt like the team played a good, crisp game and just got out-talented, or caught some bad breaks. I felt this way frequently during the early Tedford years. Those teams barely hovered above .500, but most of the time looked like a well-coached team that just needed some more talent. They got it and went on a nice run.

Wilcox teams do not look like that. Well, in his first few seasons they sometimes did. But now they don't. We play sloppy, undisciplined games and whole units look uncoordinated with one another. There do not seem to be smart game plans that take advantage of the opponents' weaknesses; we mostly play the same schemes no matter what. The game is not managed well; there seems to be little understanding of when to press the advantage and when to hang back, what the situation calls for, etc. Sometimes we win anyway. But the games almost never look crisp. This season, I'd say only the Minnesota game looked particularly crisp. Maybe Oregon State too. Everything else has looked sloppy, even when we win. Virginia made plenty of mistakes down the stretch and was begging to have this game taken from them. Cal couldn't take advantage.

The Dykes years had some sloppy play too, but at least the high scoring was entertaining. Too many Wilcox games are simply dull. That's why so many fans check out at the halfway mark every year.

Harry should have dumped Sally after SDSU. We've spent a month and a half trying to work up the courage to break it off. Now we are stuck going on 3 more dates that absolutely no one wants to go on.

We owe him $5 million for 2026 and $5 million 2027 but he has an obligation to mitigate. Maybe valued at $1 million each year? I'd offer him $1 million a year for 9 years (no obligation to mitigate) which would be good for Cal and hopefully good for him too, tax wise.

Then without all the extra salaries (Rolovich, Gregory…) we are essentially at our current baseline to offer up to $5 million per year to the new coach and more if the donors kick in more (but we also need them to support the new coach with substantial NIL, so if we can save money on the coach….).

The worst part of the game was to see the evolution of Tony Elliott with UVA and contrast to us. Elliott's first three seasons were among the worst of Wilcox's record and yet he was able to bounce back and have a 8-1 record against weak ACC teams for the first time in over 30 years. Meanwhile Wilcox continues to be mediocre in year 9.

I wasn't that impressed with UVA. What I did see was a 6th year QB who was very good in picking apart zones and taking what teams were giving him.

There is an alternative universe where DB does that. I am not sure that some of this die was cast when we went with "talent" over experience. Impossible to know and I understand (and agree) that JKS over 4 years was a better choice....just that I would give us about 10% chance of retaining because he is going to get a HUGE amount of $$$ thrown at him by teams that are a QB away from being next years Indiana. Heck. If we really want to hate bloomington on a level only the Cutters did keep in mind that Cig needs a QB next yeaer ;-(

The Cal game "entertainment factor" left years ago. Some of us are still living in the JT years or high scoring SD years. Fans, especially students, don't show up to watch what we have been doing the past few years. Where "fun" leaves, it's largely because the team is disappointing. When was the last time you had "fun" at a game?
The band? Halftime show? Card stunts? Winning by more than 2 points? Even during JT years, because of the nature of Bears football, we couldn't relax and have "fun" until the last part of the 4th quarter. I dropped season tickets 10 years ago. I could still fly up from Long Beach (albeit my "kids" don't care anymore since they have jobs and kids now). Yes, yesterday was no fun. Now it's back to "Beat Stanfurd and go to a bowl" but who's going to the bowl game? Last years loss to UNLV at SoFi was definitely no fun.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

UVA aren't world beaters, but they are what we all hoped Cal would be in the weak ACC. Brown hasn't had many snaps this season, but it's clear that he's been a career backup vs. a QB starter that has had a lot of reps leading teams over multiple seasons.

Last years bowl game is on my list of why Cal/CFB is no fun anymore. If the team doesn't care about a bowl game, why should I? I'll never go to another meaningless bowl again.

Maybe he was somber because he came to the sudden realization that he is not head coach material and that he had deluded himself into thinking that he was. Included is the sense that positive thinking and never-say-die can't overcome the lack of innate ability. Along the way, he can reflect on the state of his values in the UO recruiting scandal with Tosh and the "ghost" UO offer to wangle a contract extension.

If so, we might see a different turn of events no later than the end of the SMU game. He's now resigned to it, looks like to me.

Part of the reason for this year's optimism was the relatively weak schedule. Still, part of it was Rivera coming in as GM to take some of the extra NIL-related time burden off Wilcox so he could focus on coaching, and, supposedly, the other impediment to success, the lack of resources , was being addressed. So far, the results have been disappointing. I'm not sure what it will take to turn things around at Cal. People cite Indiana as an example of how quickly things can be better, but that seems like an outlier.

I wasn't that impressed with UVA. What I did see was a 6th year QB who was very good in picking apart zones and taking what teams were giving him.

Impossible to know and I understand (and agree) that JKS over 4 years was a better choice....just that I would give us about 10% chance of retaining because he is going to get a HUGE amount of $$$ thrown at him by teams that are a QB away from being next years Indiana. Heck. If we really want to hate bloomington on a level only the Cutters did keep in mind that Cig needs a QB next yeaer ;-(

Virginia has better WRs, a better OL and a rushing attack that is not near last in the country despite playing a really weak schedule. Their success running the ball opened up the passing game. Losing Uluave didn't help. If Cal only had a "game manager" at QB we would probably be 2-7 instead of 5-4.
