Not a splashy hire. Least it's one less school we have to compete against for a HC job. Interesting enough, he got beat out by Luck in 09'

Young Samoan head coach, former quarterback, great nephew of the "throwin' Samoan" Jack Thompson, accomplished NFL and college quarterback coach, a Stanford alum. Seems like a solid hire for them. They have had great success in recruiting when they hire POC (4 coaches now, 4 Rose Bowls). The only POC Cal has ever hired at HC is Kapp? It is getting a bit glaring. Though I guess Rivera is GM.

The real issue at Stanford is getting the university comfortable with bringing in transfers so they can compete in the Portal. Otherwise the Portal is only an exit and there is not enough time to backfill with HS recruits (a dubious proposition anyway).

They have opened the door for transfers, and have bank. I think they want to keep the Axe.

Wow, I thought Frank Reich destroying Cal would be worth the head coaching job. I guess beating Cal ain't all it's cracked up to be.

If Cal ends up hiring Tosh Lupoi, the Stanford-Cal rivalry will 2 coaches who are ...

Well, they both appear to be Polynesian.

But Tosh apparently isn't I learned yesterday from reading this thread from 2011.

I know. Lupoi is a derivative of Lupo. I have no idea why people thought he was Poly. He's Hungarian or something.

Not "apparently." Lupoi is Italian and Tosh is 0% Polynesian. However, he is LDS and a lot of Polynesians are also. Tosh is also a Cal guy, comfortable in a lot of different cultural environments. I also doubt he corrects any recruit who is Polynesian and assumes he is also.

He is also a slimy individual that will get Cal put on probation if hired.

But there aren't any rules anymore.

An exaggeration, but I actually like the idea that Tosh might get Cal to push the envelope. Our administration and insiders play by too many unwritten and outdated rules. It is like Tedford taking a knee at Southern Miss in 2004 instead of running up the score to get a Rose Bowl invite. Wilcox had that quality in spades. Then Cal fans not wanting to hurt his feelings by firing him because he is such a nice guy. Or Cal fans who are against "gimmicky" offenses that score too many points "too quickly." We need to be more ruthless and more creative.

Our very conservative football culture is a mismatch for our university and student body/alumin which is a beacon of intelligence, excellence, innovation, diversity, creativity and challenging the status quo. We need a football culture that is just as radical. The Calgorithm is an organic expression of that and is pointing the way.

At least we have Cal alums in charge for the first time.

The difference between Stanford hiring a first time head coach like Tavita Prichard and Cal hiring a Tosh Lupoi (or Davis Webb or Desean Jackson) is that their GM, Andrew Luck, has no head coaching or GM experience, whereas Ron Rivera is a long time NFL head coach who can help guide his new hire.

The other difference is Prichard and Luck are friends. At some point, either Luck has to fire Pritchard or Pritchard has to tell Luck he's leaving for a better position.

Or Pritchard has to go to the AD and ask him to tell Luck to back off and let Pritchard actually have the authority of a head coach, instead of acting he's in charge and Pritchard is just his assistant.

True, but Frank Reich is an experienced head coach, and I'm sure he assisted Luck in the selection of Pritchard.

In Trump's America? In 2025, where you can round up the price of a food and drinks at a UCLA-Washington so it can go to an NIL fund? What organization is going to do the probation?

Get real, Pollyanna. This isn't 1975 anymore.
