Tosh should be able to leverage JKS's commitment to Cal to convince several high quality receivers to join Cal through the Portal

Awesome.

Now Tosh is going to rack up some serious talent at WR/TE, they're going to line up for a chance to play with the top returning QB in the NCAA.

I hope he doesn't ignore the OL.

Why would he do that exactly?

Seems super likely that he would ignore the OL. That's the first thought I had.

This is too much good news around Cal football. I don't trust it. Am I in a simulation?

Tosh is a former DL and DL coach, I think he understands the importance of the OL and DL.

One of each. Isn't that what everyone does or do I have a problem?

Stupid question. Why is JKS in Hawaii? Has Fall Semester ended? All classes are virtual now?

Probably for the weekend to support his old team/teammates in playoffs. And it's cold in Berkeley.

Gotta get back for finals and bowl prep (and help recruit)

Honestly, with NIL and the transfer portal, do these kids even bother with classes anymore? The system has basically killed the concept of "student athlete".

Last day of classes was Friday. Next week is "dead week", and finals are on the following week.

He was there cheering on his high school team which just won the state championship in the same venue where the Hawaii bowl is going to be played. I'm pretty sure he's coming back for finals.

Well reportedly Mendoza got his Haas business degree in only 2.5 years, all while playing football, traveling, staying up late studying the playbook, waking up at 5:00 AM to get in extra throwing practice and staying after practice for extra reps….

I think it's just a different academic world. When I went to Cal, the front row (unless the prof objected) was mostly cassette recorders. My understanding is that now many lectures are streamed and remote sections are available. If Mendoza is disciplined (I'm betting that he is), he has used summers and "downtime" during travel to his advantage. Also, we don't know if he carried in AP Credits.

Also, a lot of kids come in now with significant AP credit. The average football and basketball players may not have too much, but a guy like Mendoza who was headed to (?) Yale probably had at least 1/2 year's worth, maybe closer to a full year.

It's a different story from when I was at Cal and we had to pay $212.50 per quarter for three quarters a year. Back then, it was quite common to spend an extra quarter or two (or three) to get through undergrad. Friend of mine graduated in 3 years + a summer, but that was the rare exception. A lot more common now. Plus, there's significant grade inflation. You don't have to worry about being at the top the class to get an "A".

For sure. $637.50 for the year, plus textbooks (and room and board, of course, but a higher % of us grew up within 20 miles of campus, so we always had that option as a to-be-avoided fallback, lol).

That was my tuition amount too. My monthly room/board in a frat was $145/month. For 6 years after I graduated, I had a two bedroom furnished apartment on Benvenue close to Dwight Way for $300/month (I split that with a roommate for 3 of those years).

$145/Month? That would make you 116
You went to school in 1909 when the rent was $145/month.

You could rent a decent Northside apartment for around $100 a month. Walk to Peet's, walk to class, walk home, go to work. The no-fun method.

JKS is very focused on school and classes. One of the very biggest draws for his family to Cal was the value of the Berkeley degree. They talk about his life plan all the time.

Last week was reading week. No classes. And if you have plenty of money (he now does) why wouldn't you go home? Particularly if it meant you could check out your old high school in the championship game?

Sometimes cynicism is warranted. More often than not though it's just snark for snark's sake. Suggesting that JKS spent reading week in Hawaii because "NIL killed the concept of student athletes" is the latter.

The flight to Honolulu takes less time than it used to take me to drive home to LA for Thanksgiving.

Driving between LA and the Bay Area has a lot of advantages over flying, but when you live on an island…. At least there is no immigration line when flying between Hawaii and California.
