Someone should be doing a documentary - while we have lots of new players we also retained a good number from the previous staff. Would be great to see how coaching and culture changes transform a program. 30-for-30 type stuff.

It will be infinitely more interesting to see how they play... especially when they get knocked on their ass. The few people I knew who had any connection to Wilcox were always positive. "Great guy", players loved him.

This I agree with. There is a really interesting story here about a kid like Tosh for whom football has mattered a great deal, who goes to the local best public university in the country, goes off, learns craft, comes back.

Now it needs to have the "rise from the ashes and become reincarnation of Pappy" in its last act to actually work and that story hasn't been written but the story is all there if the NPCs cooperate.

Guys you can have your own opinion about JW. My son played for him. Most players liked JW a lot. Third party sources…come on now…That being said there are always players who don't like a coach. I agree with that. I also will say JW got a lot done behind the scenes that many of you don't know. I think that the big donors saw that was not enough to get it done and a full court press and change up and down the chain was needed. JW was given a win total to reach, could not get it done and the decision was made to move on. Nothing wrong with that either. Excited for what is ahead. Go Bears!

You saw the quality of our starters. You think guys 2nd and 3rd string are getting much in the portal? And those are the guys who probably think Wilcox kept them from playing. Oh well, like I said, I know one guy who was a fairly young equipment mgr who told me most of the players liked Wilcox.

We regularly lost starters to the Portal under Wilcox as well. I'm not saying it was because they didn't "like" Wilcox as a person. For the most part, we don't know why they left, even if they made a public statement, and every player had their individual decision making and probably had more than one reason.

I will say, "liking" the head coach in football is much less important than it is in basketball where you work directly with the head coach every day.

Great post. I'm bought into the "Tosh Era" now, but it doesn't mean Wilcox sucked at every aspect of his job. There were some parts of his job that he was okay at. Good even (for a few things). The main problems he had were recruiting and not letting go of under-performing staff quickly enough. Coach Lup will be better at that.
