Cal Football and Baseball Pull Off Double Play With Commitment From TE Jamie Spurgeon
It's been a big week for the Bears’ latest commit as 2027 tight end as Jamie Spurgeon went from earning a state championship with his baseball squad to securing his future with a commitment to Cal on his official visit weekend tonight. The 6-4/205 multi-sport athlete did it all for his high school, pitching and at the plate in baseball and at quarterback on the gridiron.
“Cal’s the best fit for me because I have trust in the coaching staff that they will be able to develop me to be able to play in the NFL,” Spurgeon said. “It’s close to home and that’s important to me. They see that i’m a great athlete and they will be able to turn me into a really good tight end.”
The 3 star TE played his senior season in tiny Minarets High School in O’Neals, CA, south of Yosemite. But despite the remoteness of his location, the talented tight end has nevertheless found himself on the recruting map, with offers from Cal, Texas Tech, Utah, Boston College and more.
The talented athlete did it all for Minarets, throwing for 11 TDs and 1600 yards at QB, rushing for 644 yards and 7 TD along with one reception for 22 yards. As a sophomore at Clovis East, Spurgeon had 10 receptions for 152 yards and 2 TDs. The talented athlete also did it all for his state champs baseball squad with an impressive stat line: BA .512, SLG .921, 51 RBI, 20 doubles, 7 triples and 6 HR at the plate along with 19 stolent bases. On the mound, Spurgeon had 63 IP with a 3.22 ERA, 104 K and only 26 walks.
The two sport star plans to play both football and baseball once on campus in 2027 for the Bears.
The most recent football/baseball two sport athletes were former Cal QB and OF Brandon McIlwain in 2017-18 and former Cal TE and 1B Jacob Wark from 2011-14.
Spurgeon becomes the 21st commit of the 2027 class, joining 4 star QB commit Dane Weber WRs Charles Davis III (Westlake), Demare Dezeurn Demare Dezeurn, Blake Gunter (Southlake, TX), RBs Jaxsen Stokes (Sierra Canyon) and AJ Antwon Sanders (CE King/Houston), TE Rahzario Edwards, OTs Amaziah Siale (Mission Viejo), Isaiah Bertola and Josh Bunni (Cardinal Newman), DLs Troy Bowens (Sutter), Jaderian Jones (Dallas) and Miles Schirmer (Corona Centennial), edge Giovanni Hodge (Grant Union), LBs Elyjah Staples (Marquez-Huntington Park) and Gunnar Perry (Notre Dame Prep/Scottsdale, AZ), CB Duvay Williams (Junipero Serra), safety Myles Baker (Sierra Canyon) and IMG Academy kicker Zach Brien.
