Seeing Newsom in a Cal jacket is exactly what we need. He has powers in this state nobody else has - we need to keep him on our side.

He lobbied for the lighting funding personally to the governor. Ditto this video. Hell, he probably sewed up that jacket. The man is working it.

It is absolutely fantastic that these things are happening and getting done.

That being said....being the head coach of a football team is a huge time sink and responsibility in and of itself. Should we be concerned that upgrading lights in the stadium, organizing PR meetings with the governor, and potentially sewing a Cal jacket has to be done by the head coach?

Should we at least be making a list of all the "extras" that Tosh is doing and look at how we can farm out some of these responsibilities going forward? If these types of actions are necessary for success I'm not sure its reasonable to expect our next head coaches to share the drive that Tosh has....at least not without burning out.

Also as a slight aside...why aren't those jackets available at the student store?

If Newsome is going to root for a college team, it might as well be us, since his school doesn't play football anymore. I wonder if he knows who Dan Pastorini is?

Gavin should do the coin flip vs UCLA. Would be some nice publicity for him as he leaves office.

Come to think of it, when was the last time a sitting Governor cam eto a Cal game. I think they are permanently on the VIP list.

We also have Ron Rivera as GM and a young, hard working staff. Good to get all this publicity in before Fall Camp begins. If they don't seem prepared against UCLA you can question their time allocation in July.

I'm impressed that the governor is in the video. Being in Sonoma, I'm not too impressed with Napa. As Tommy Smothers said "Sonoma makes wine. Napa makes auto parts." The castle is nice though. Tosh also has a very nice car.

What are the most memorable California governor-UC Berkeley moments?

--Gav has had to be involved in Cal because of all the housing stuff.

--I think Arnold who filmed his 1994 movie Junior on campus visited a few times, but I think he spent his time at the lab.

--I saw Gray Davis at Zellerbach Hall. He got a UC Berkeley-style welcome.




--Jerry Brown would speak on Sproul Plaza in the late 90s, before he became Oakland mayor. And students would just ignore him.

--I don't recall Jerry Brown 2.0 being on campus as governor (but I could be wrong). He did participate in the Bancroft Library oral history project.

It also reflects my old fashioned views of a football coach. Nose to rhe grindstone, all football, all the time. Rebuilding efforts don't allow for time to wine taste and gladhanding road trips. Probably wrong in this day and age. Whatever. I certainly still have extremely high hopes for Cal and Tosh. If anything, this thread certainly helps me to understand why Tosh is able to recruit... everywhere he goes. He's a non stop, dynamic personality who's not afraid to hit the road and speak with people about a university he loves.

I guess, I don't know. Cal has only been really good a few times in my life and those three teams had really good coaches: Tedford, Snyder and White. White and Cal played fast and loose with academics but White proved he could coach after Cal too. And obviously they could all build good staffs. I guess we just have to wait on Tosh. All I've ever heard about him is his recruiting ability. Of course all I ever heard about Wilcox was his coaching ability and he obviously has a ceiling as a coordinator.
