Cal getting a Howard Stern Show caliber band to perform at our postgame vs. Webster State is a sign that Cal has really come up in the world or Train has really come down.

Is Train performing at the Cal-Webster game a sign that Cal is now a big deal or that Train is no longer a big deal?

I am a bit curious about how the stage will be set up for how ever many fans show up for the big tilt with Webster, er, Whitman, er, Wagner College.

Train has some members who are serious Cal fans. They are doing this to support the program and for no other reason. Bless them. People should come out to support the team and check out Train as well

So when Tosh let it slip that Cal's administration was working on bringing a concert to Memorial Stadium, was it this "Train" post-game show he was referring to? I was envisioning a major concert at CMS on a date when football was not being played.

According to AI, Rob Hotchkiss, one of the band's founders, graduated from Cal in '83, the same year as RR and one year after me. Maybe they knew each other?

They also just played at Shoreline last month. I would have gone, but I'm committed to taking my 12-year-old to alll concerts my wife and I go to, and it was on a school night.

This is a test run concert. Cal has a new speaker system, which hopefully can perform better than it did during the UCLA game. We've never used this system for a concert, and we want these concerts to be a thing going forward. But we don't yet have our new lighting in place (that will get installed in the off season courtesy of Governor Newsom) and we need that lighting for nighttime concerts, which is what Tosh was referring to. Nighttime concerts will be in the spring at the earliest.

But again, Train is doing this to help Cal out. It's essentially a donation to the program - we sold A TON of additional tickets to the Wagner game after this was announced. Train was touched by the use the Save Me San Francisco song and they are fans so they are doing us a solid. That is it.

Well, that is very cool that the band wants to help out Cal football and appreciated Cal's use of "Save Me, San Francisco." Thanks for the additional info and the backstory on the new sound system and the new lights that are coming. Go Bears! Go Train!

I don't know why some people bag on Train. They're a local band with global hits, they're active with local charities, and they've supported Bay Area sports teams for decades.

On the topic of local bands, it would obviously be a huge reach to bring in Metallica or Green Day, but I wonder if a Counting Crows performance could be in the cards? After all, Adam Duritz went to Cal and is famously a huge Cal fan.

They're considered corny, that's about it.

"MOR" or middle of the road mainstream music = bigger public.

Great initiative.

VA Tech's anthem, "Enter Sandman" was written in the Berkeley Hills not too far from CMS.

Getting him to perform I'm on a Boat and Dick in a Box would absolutely win us neutral fans across the country.

Does Cal need concerts at Memorial? Yes, it's existential to financing the Athletic Department. Are Cal fans going to like all the music acts - absolutely not. Music is intrinsically personal with more strong and diverse feelings than perhaps any other topic on the planet.

And for the University to get an act of his reknown for a Free concert to help work out the kinks for future shows and to get people to buy tickets for a Wagner game that historically no one would show up for is a minor miracle.

You can both support Cal and the opportunity that Train represents as a free, test run concert and not like the band or its music.

What doesn't work is disrespectful, out of context attacks. This isn't an open forum in an absolute sense. BI exists to support Cal Athletics and its fans and donors. That doesn't mean we support every person, idea or action that the University or athletic department encompasses. Our recent public history makes that more than obvious.

So "I love that Cal is hosting concerts and I can imagine all the hard work that people inside and outside the university have put into making this happen but I sure wish it was a band I liked or believed was more appropriate" is fine but straight negativity is not.

If I didn't have three kids soccer games to go to and a girl scout uniform fitting all on Saturday, this would totally incentivize me to fly up to see it. As of a now, I gotta tape it and watch it in the evening. Go Bears!

Anyway, just so I'm not misconstrued on this: I don't really care if people think they're corny. They're a local act with multiple hits and it's cool with me if they want to perform a show to help the football team sell more tickets.
