Credit to the coaches for having grabbed a decent backup QB behind JKS, not an easy proposition for someone coming in behind the star frosh.

So refreshing to see Pat McCann attack the MIDDLE OF THE FIELD!

We're dying by penalties.
And terrible tackling.
I actually think it's not as bad as other games.
we just gotta get off the field in 3rd and long.
if we can clean up penalties, our D would be good enough to win most games for us if our O is just ok.

Good news is I can see our defense becoming pretty scary next year.
I think we need to give McCann a bit more time. Our guys don't have enough reps with the new modified offense.
The playcalling was flat out bad until we stopped wasting a down running on first. It has gotten a lot better the last 10 minutes of the half.
i dunno dawg. yeah could've been better, but seemed like a lot of mis-execution was there as well.

Strong seems to be playing pretty damn well. Big difference.

Explain why Sagapolutele is a better QB.

I agree. Brousseau looks good. Not necessarily amazing but he doesn't try to do too much, he's avoiding stupid mistakes, and he's running the offense well.
We're down 4 against a 4-1 team at the half, and the defense is holding its own.
I've read the complaints. They aren't groundless, but in the 40+ years I've watched Cal play, I've seen a lot worse - like the first half last week.

Mis-execution running on first for nothing, sideline incompletions and blown up bubble screens on third and long. You cant just run straight up on this VT front 4, not with Emery. It was bad playcalling for most of the half, but great once we started getting aggressive, using misdirection and throwing to the middle of the field off of playaction, pitches outside, running on a well/faked draw,…. Getting momentum, which we should have continued with on that 4th and 4 past midfield but ended up getting tge ball back and 3 anyway.

I agree with you on running straight into that front 4. so there were some bad calls but I would say there was some understandable/reasonable calls early.
seems like mccann was probing early, but from my perspective was not all bad and some good concepts with lack of execution until things got clicking.
sounds like the suspense has all worn offbearister said:Cal88 said:m2bear said:

My stock sports cliche expressions of encouragement going into the locker room at half that for some reason never help Cal in the 2nd half:
1. We should be down by 3 TDs; and
2. They had us against the ropes and failed to knock us out.
Usual outcome:
They will win by 3 TDs and knock us through the ropes into the third row.

This is literally the worst 3rd down play calling I've ever seen at Cal, I'd rather see direct dives into the Nose Tackle than whatever this is.
Somerville was better. Maybe everyone will get their wish with Rolovich in the second half?
I'd disagree with that.
McCann trying some new things but not very successfully. But it seems like the calls are ok, but lack of practice/execution.

JKS wouldn't make the blitz read and dump it in the middle. Brousseau consistently does.
I'm not even sure JKS has the mechanics to do it. It stood out to me on that analytics site someone posted of his throw distribution.
