We are 138th out of 138 in the FBS division in penalty yards against.

Syracuse has played one fewer game while giving up more yards per game, but even by yards per game we rank 137th at 89.7, 2nd to last in the country.

Moreover, the situation is not improving; if anything it is getting worse:

UCLA: 6/59
Syracuse: 9/87
Wagner: 8/80
Clemson: 8/61
UNLV: 16/152
VTech: 10/99

Getting this under control will be important to our success in the second half of the season but given the current trajectory, I am not hopeful.

on the plus side, we will slip only one spot in the rankings if we get worse somehow

Sounds about right for a guy who broke numerous rules (fake injuries vs Oregon, flipping recruits to UW while still working for Cal) years ago.

Discipline. Decorum.

Now, can a guy change? Sure.
We'll see if he can lead his charges the right way from here on out.

split evenly between defense and offense? or ?

usually lots of penalties is due to poor coaching

Plus at least some of the penalties have been declined - like the play last game where we had 2 penalties on one play. Where do these declined penalties get tracked?

It seems like we got several borderline PI calls against VT, and not many holding calls on the OL, which were a mainstay earlier this season. If you take out the dodgy targeting call and a couple of PIs then it wasn't that bad of an outing in terms of penalties, relative to the calls from previous games.

VT fans would argue that we should've gotten even more penalties, most notably PI on the last play of the game
