Why would RR have to be the guy to hire the next coach especially since he did a lousy job hiring this one? We all know he can coach way better than Lupoi.

Serious questions below (I really don't have the answers and would appreciate it if those who did provided them).

Was RR forced to hire Tosh by the whales or did RR actively promote Tosh's hire with the whales to get the latter to sign the checks?

From some of the earlier comments on this board, it was the whale donors who made Tosh a done deal. Everyone else had to fall in line after that. If that is the case, is the Tosh hire really on RR? Should he have resigned as GM when the whales said "it's Tosh or we're not going to donate?"

Insider information, much too sophisticated for the hoi polloi to grasp.

The warning signs were there, but decision-makers ignored them. They convinced themselves Tosh was the answer, and now the program is paying the price. Instead of building momentum, we are in crisis management, likely poised to pour every ounce of attention and every available resource into halting the slide. The moment to prove Cal was on the rise has passed.

Let's be honest about where we are: Tosh is not a good coach. The real question now is whether any repair effort can change that. Suppose the powers-that-be surround him with more money and a better staff. How far can that carry a coach who has already shown us his limitations? My answer: to mediocrity, at best. Resources can patch weaknesses; they cannot manufacture the judgment, vision, and leadership a head coach must bring.

All the king's horses and all the king's men will not put Cal football back together again, and certainly not quickly.

So maddening that any time a coach or GM or AD or anybody connected with the program has to be a "Cal guy" to be considered. So stupid.

[Dr Phil] "so, how's that win/loss record working for you? Looking forward to being considered for the Leftovers Bowl this year?"

How about the best candidate? How about merit?

Who gives two ****s where they came from. You'd turn down Bob Chesney cause your hoity toity holier than thou senses just can't take it cause he's not a Cal guy? Idiotic. Continue to enjoy that chronic losing record.

A guy isn't a program savior just cause he has a Cal diploma. Anyone who graduated as an athlete and then comes back to coach or GM or whatever has zero clue how to deal with the administrations dysfunctions just like any other civilian. Everybody learns on the job. No, it is not a "special place" somehow that requires that you graduate from here in order to understand it. Step down off your throne and get with the rest of the world.

I look forward to the day that may never come where people smarten up and the fact pattern for hiring someone with the football program no longer requires you to be a "Cal guy"

/rant

Let's see, in the last 40 yrs we have hired a total of TWO Cal guys ( former players) as either a head coach or GM! Rivera and Tosh. Shows that you don't have any idea about what you're talking about! Many qualified former players were interested in the head job and never got a look. Tosh was on NOBODIES list of candidates. He got it based on donors wanting his recruiting abilities. Him being a former player played a very small role in it!

A master recruiter in the age of NIL. The sophistication is beyond measure.

Sometimes our donors think they are the smartest people in the room!
