That first half has me seeing a dumpster fire. I don't know how it turns around.
It better, otherwise he'll need a psychologist.

He honestly probably doesn't think he's doing that bad of a job. Disappointing definitely, but not the embarrassing dumpster fire that everyone else sees. I really think he is that dangerously inept.

I said after Clemson that his grand strategy is that next year's class will save him

That class will be gutted with more efforts like this. Although I'm sure every recruit will get some back story to this disaster that we will never hear. Maybe some of these kids will buy it. JKS bought his story and came back. Whether it's true or not, only a few will know.

Tosh doesn't know what he's doing. I gave him my full support at the start of the year, but he revealed very quickly he's a rah-rah guy without the head knowledge to lead a program. He's a salesman who sold us a bill of goods and we bought it hook, line, and sinker in our hopes he could take us to the promised land. Looks like he can't. Just doesn't have it.

There is nothing wrong with the HC being a "rah-rah guy without the head knowledge to lead a program," as long as he has the ability to hire highly skilled and experienced coordinators to take care of that job. Tosh couldn't or at least didn't do that.

There are not many pairs of words that are more mismatched than "poor Tosh."

From what I was told back-in-the-day, that was the plan for Joe Kapp. He'd cheerlead and assistants would do the serious work of coaching. And it kinda worked for two years, and then he decided that he actually wanted to coach.

Meanwhile, the Wake coach clearly took notes working for Nick Saban.

I thought Ron Rivera was the "rah-rah" guy.
He raised $88.5 million for this.

He couldn't hire decent coaches to replace the ones who helped him out the first few years. Not an easy guy to coach with.

The problem is that rarely, and I mean rarely, works.
And if you are lucky enough to have a guy who gets the right assistants (and when has that happened to us lately???)
they will just leave to become a head coach at the first opportunity and you are stuck with a guy at the top who is not smart enough to lead the program. It seems much more
judicious to have your head guy the brains of the organization who also surrounds himself with good hires. If the assistants leave you still have the main ingredient there in your program.
Through the years my teams have exhibited both kinds of coaches and history has shown that it's much more difficult to build a program with a pure delegator. I'll take a
Walsh, Tedford, or Shanahan type any day over a Holmoe,
Wilcox, Tomsula, or Singletary (and now Tosh) type coach. The first group lost coaches to other teams and usually didn't miss a beat while the latter group was always searching for those unique assistants that would elevate the team, which never happened.

Poor Tosh? He's going to make tens of millions of us. Sure, he's going to be professionally humiliated but he has no one but himself to blame for that and besides, most people would gladly take that exchange.

It was a good plan back in the day, until the USFL was formed and poached coaches who otherwise would have been available for the college game.

Stop saying "we". This is what I expected. We have 2 more YEARS of this. Lets keep this disaster to 3 seasons and LEARN from this. The lesson to learn from this is to not let wealthy alums shove an ill suited candidate on Cal. Do a recruitment - check backgrounds! Stop letting a "what might have been recruiting class in 2010(?)" dominate your thinking.

Sorry, poor choice of word(s). I really didn't mean everyone was on board. Of course not. I just meant "we" as in most of us hoped this would work while the powers that be pretty much settled this. But I get it. I threw my support behind Tosh as a loyal Golden Bear and hoped it would work. But anyone who knows me realizes I have always wanted an offensive minded brain in charge. Was not excited with the pick of Tosh but gave it my all to support his initial efforts. That being said,
I can't say I am surprised by what's happened, though I think even I was hoping for a little more competency than this. Because of contractual obligations we were stuck forever with Wilcox. Let's hope we don't wallow in mediocrity for years giving Tosh a pass before we ("we" as in Cal) make a change and try once again to get this thing right. I am in agreement with your post. Go Bears!
