He honestly probably doesn't think he's doing that bad of a job. Disappointing definitely, but not the embarrassing dumpster fire that everyone else sees. I really think he is that dangerously inept.
Tosh doesn't know what he's doing. I gave him my full support at the start of the year, but he revealed very quickly he's a rah-rah guy without the head knowledge to lead a program. He's a salesman who sold us a bill of goods and we bought it hook, line, and sinker in our hopes he could take us to the promised land. Looks like he can't. Just doesn't have it.
There is nothing wrong with the HC being a "rah-rah guy without the head knowledge to lead a program," as long as he has the ability to hire highly skilled and experienced coordinators to take care of that job. Tosh couldn't or at least didn't do that.
The problem is that rarely, and I mean rarely, works.
And if you are lucky enough to have a guy who gets the right assistants (and when has that happened to us lately???)
they will just leave to become a head coach at the first opportunity and you are stuck with a guy at the top who is not smart enough to lead the program. It seems much more
judicious to have your head guy the brains of the organization who also surrounds himself with good hires. If the assistants leave you still have the main ingredient there in your program.
Through the years my teams have exhibited both kinds of coaches and history has shown that it's much more difficult to build a program with a pure delegator. I'll take a
Walsh, Tedford, or Shanahan type any day over a Holmoe,
Wilcox, Tomsula, or Singletary (and now Tosh) type coach. The first group lost coaches to other teams and usually didn't miss a beat while the latter group was always searching for those unique assistants that would elevate the team, which never happened.
