After a pretty good first half (with the exception of more exasperating penalties) we got pantsed. I'd love to hear someone ask Tosh what changed in the second half. Did we just get outcoached?

One team made half time adjustments, the other did not.

One team had a REAL head coach; the other had an imposter.

My interpretation: the SMU coach was not amused by his team's first-half performance and lit a fire under them at halftime.

One team learns from a half of underperforming, one team continues to rack up penalties and not play up to a standard

How TF do you make half time adjustments? It took 6 months to come up with this plan. You mean second half of the year?

More realistically, it's likely the same as a FCS team going to the lockerroom close and coming out and losing by a half dozen scores.

There wasn't an adjustment, it's just a team that came out to have fun and not take the game too seriously, knowing it's a win no matter what, and then being told to wake up.

The team's playing up to their HC's standards. The HC's the guy who recruited against Cal while on Cal's dime and recruiting trip. He's the same guy who agreed to take a contract with his alma mater, only to back out and go for boat money. He's also the one who had Cal players fake injury.

In short, the standards set by the Cal HC aren't high. It's no wonder his players also fail to meet high standards.

As long as I live, I will not understand why Tosh's past did not disqualify him from being a candidate for Cal's head coaching position. In my 50 years as a devoted Cal fan, I've seen only a handful of true villains. These include Matt Barnes, who knocked Shantay Legans unconscious with a vicious forearm; Terri McKeever, who abused her swimmers; Jim Knowlton, who did not act quickly enough on the allegations against McKeever; and Tosh Lupoi, who sabotaged our 2012 football recruiting class. How on earth did Tosh Lupoi end up as our head football coach?

I can't say if it's true, but I can tell you the narrative:

made a bad decision at a fairly young age when he thought he was being screwed... later had regrets... still loved Cal and very much wanted the chance to redeem himself

There are some pretty wise people who believe this, so I'm tempted to take their word for it.

I can't believe we're still litigating this.

As a long time, loyal Cal fan, I took what Tosh did to our program in 2012 personally because it directly affected my experience as a fan. Loyal fans of limited giving capacity are powerless in the directions the program goes, but are needed to attend games and turn on our TVs to watch Cal football broadcasts. In the absence of any significant power, our only outlet is to vent on sites like this, or withdraw from renewing our season tickets or watching games on TV. So far, I've only done the former, but hiring decisions that are insulting to my loyalty and connection to the football program make the latter alternatives increasingly appealing.

Are they the same wise people who decided Tosh would be a great first time HC at a clearly-needs-to-win-now Cal?

Are these wise people in the room with us?

Tosh was 30 years old when he acted the way he did back in 2011. If you are not behaving maturely by age 30, you have definite problems.

To you and the two posters above you, I don't know what to say except for I don't know the full story and I respect your opinion. Just trying to explain how the other side was feeling with regards to bringing him back.

Also important to differentiate between how Tosh left (not good) and how the Bears are doing thus fall under his leadership (also not good).

I must have missed his abject public apology to Cal fans, alumni, coaches and players for his behavior back then. Is there a link?

The saying a fish rots from its head is applicable here. The current Cal team is undisciplined because the HC is undisciplined. The team struggles to find its identity because the HC doesn't know what the identity is. The team is underperforming because the HC is not up to par. The team is a reflection of Tosh. He recruited the team. He hired the assistants. He established the culture. There is no separating the team's failures from Tosh.

I'm fairly certain Tedford and Pendergast (DC) were involved or at the very least were informed about this tactic. When the NCAA came calling, Tosh was the expendable fall guy. Since Tosh appeared to have some resentment, it seems Tedford did a bad job of asking Tosh to take one for the team.

By the way, that 2010 defensive performance was outstanding. The high-scoring Duck offense had a season low 15 points.

Don't be silly. This is like me asking you to cite your sources that Tosh was the sole person responsible for faking the injuries. I'm just stating my opinion just like you. In reality, neither of us knows what exactly transpired in 2010. However, if you are privy to some inside information, I would definitely like to know.

Tosh was the one who was penalized by the NCAA after their investigation. As such, Tosh is the one who is responsible for the fake injuries. If you want to claim otherwise, it's on you to cite your sources.

No one is saying that Tosh did not get penalized. You are debating points nobody is saying otherwise. Do you really think Tedford would have admitted to the NCAA that he or Pendergast was the culprit? Tosh was the expendable fall guy. His suspension was less disruptive than if the penalty fell on Tedford or Pendergast. Tosh might've been the author of the idea, but he must have ran it by Tedford/Pendergast, or else such insubordination might had led to his termination.

I get it, you're a Tosh apologist. You're trying to find ways to excuse what he did. The record is clear, he got punished because he was the one who had his players fake injuries. All your suppositions otherwise require assumptions about the relationship between Tedford/Pendergast and Tosh.

If you want to fellate Tosh some more, knock yourself out. But who are you going to blame for how poorly disciplined Cal's team has played under Tosh?

I think it more likely that he was punished for doing a poor job in coaching his players to fake injuries. Players glancing to the sidelines where a coach is motioning, "lie down", is just a bad look.

The whole point of faking injuries was to slow down the Oregon offense and allow for substitutions, mostly LBs and DBs, not DLs so much and certainly not exclusively. Moreover, as you said, it was done so poorly and obviously that Pendergast and Tedford had to know what was happening and if they had an issue with it could have stopped it.

I'm not a Tosh guy by any means, I would not have hired him, I dont excuse him for blowing up our recruiting class as a Cal employee, but I highly doubt he did injurygate by himself. I am also rooting for him to succeed beginning with a win this weekend.

I was at that game and it was humiliating to watch the ridiculous fake "injuries" and "cramps" so poorly orchestrated and in my mind performed in bad faith. I have no idea who conceived it or orchestrated it, but it infuriated me to watch. Not that long after, the Bears were the team with the Jarod Goff-led hurry up read/option offense, and Dykes was complaining about defenses intentionally slowing down the game.

And i don't care a bit if Tosh feels he was scapegoated for the slow down against Oregon. When he blew up our recruiting while apparently still on our payroll, well **** him. Only a simp would hire him back, and here we are.

The delaying tactic is definitely in the realm of bad sportsmanship. However, if an offensive scheme can be negated by such s simple ploy then maybe such a scheme is not that great to begin with.

For the simp part, that is a valid question for the whales. When Tosh was hired, I knew he could recruit, but the real mystery was can he coach? The answer has been clear since game one: NO.
