i think you confuse the entertainment industry which is a small % of los angeles residents with the rest of the city.

True, it's a small %, but the impact that it has on the city (and the world) is colossal. That's not to say this is solely a negative influence, but it's an influence nonetheless. You don't need to be a part of the entertainment industry to be affected by it.

i see. so those laker fans that posted threads are part of the bangwagonners, but the sharks posters are clearly people who watched them during hte regular season.

Ummm no. Only that the simple fact that you didn't see any Sharks threads before the playoffs doesn't prove anything about whether or not they are bandwagon fans. Obviously playoff games are more important so people are more likely to post about them.

Also, I don't see anyone creating threads about SoCal hockey teams, so how does that figure into your theory about Bay Area fans being more "bandwagon" than L.A. fans?

there wasn't a single sharks post on the prior board before they were a playoff team. arguing otherwise is ridiculous. how well did the 49ers draw before montana?

I'm still not understanding your point. Is it that there were no Sharks posts this year until the playoffs started? Or is it that there were no Sharks threads during 2002/03?

If the latter, you have a remarkable memory.

Further, the Sharks have been a regular playoff team since at least 97/98. They have only missed the playoffs one out of 12 times from 97/98 through this season. (And only three of 16 times going back to 93/94)

So do you mean there were no Sharks posts prior to 97/98?

I just don't get it at all. The reason Lakers fans are die-hard is because they are good. To say LA sports fans are better than bay area sports fans and use the Lakers as an example is ludicrous unless you can tell me why the Clippers have so few fans and why professional football failed in LA.

Saying that the Warriors have a bandwagon fanbase is crazy. The Warriors draw very well (over 18k per game each year for the last five) whereas the Clippers have only averaged 18k per game twice in their entire history. When I lived in LA in 1998-2001, I only saw Lakers flags and Lakers apparel when they started going to the NBA finals.

Also, for what it's worth, the Dodgers have no local competition - the Angels don't count as they are pretty far away. If either the A's or the Giants didn't exist, the other team would have a huge following.

Compared to other parts of the country, both Socal and Nocal are bandwagon fans - and that's a good thing. It means we have lives.

And the only reason people hate the Lakers is because they are jealous. Jealousy is not good for you. Let it go and enjoy the Lake Show!:bluecarrot:

If the point being made here is that winning teams draw more fans and losing teams draw less, then I wholeheartedly agree.

I seriously don't know how the Warriors sell so many tickets. I've been to numerous games when there wasn't a chance in hell they'd make the playoffs and the place would be packed. And loud. I'd say the Warriors are one of the least bandwagon teams in the NBA.

If anything, the loyalty of the Warriors fans is hurting them -- the owners don't care about putting a good product on the court because they'll make money either way.

The 49ers also consistently sell out their games even though they've missed the playoffs for 7 straight seasons.

Nah, just the glow of happiness that my team has a shot at the championship. Pardon the ridiculous hypothetical question, but if the Warriors were in the finals, wouldn't you be happy too?

Sorry for the gentle teasing. I'll stop now.

Yes, NorCal is the preferred nomenclature. I'll take you at your word, but trust me when many SoCal people use "NoCal" as some sort of insult.

drunk: It's not just about attendance. But even so, the Lakers only outdraw the Clippers by about 1,000-2,000 per game.

As I said, everyone has bandwagon fans. Laker fans have been able to enjoy almost unprecedented success over the last 2 decades, though, and it is amazing to me how spoiled and unpatient their fans were for the 2 years when they were struggling after Shaq left.

Wait. Do most "norcal" people on this board think that "nocal" is an insult? The only reason I see it now is because of all the teabaggers with their "nobama" bs. Otherwise I'd just assume "no" is just short for "northern". I didn't know I was this clueless for 18 years.

I wouldn't consider "NoCal" an insult, just the wrong phrase. Sort of like how some people say "nucular" instead of "nuclear."

And the Giant fans who used to brave the figgid summer nights at Candlestick to watch pretty mediocre baseball teams....that is dedication. The only team I am that dedicated to is the Cal Bears.

Give me a night game at Dodger stadium in shorts any day..er night!

Exactly. Like I said, I am loyal to my alma mater. If that makes me a typical SoCal bandwagon fan of pro sports, so be it. They do not have my loyalty. It is a business and I am paying to be entertained.

I can ignore the Lakers for the most part because I mostly ignore the NBA.

However, I am forced to endure the pain of watching the media and east coast carpetbagger fans' love affair with the Yankees.

Yan-kees Suck!

I score it:
1) Yankees;
2) Red Sox; and
3) Anyone wearing a Kobe Jersey.

NoCal is the appropriate term. It rolls off the tongue nicely, just like SoCal. NorCal sounds effing stupid. NoCal fans- particularly those of the Giants, Warriors, and Las Vegas Kings- really need to get over the LA jealously. As an outsider (not from LA) who until recently was a 10 year resident of Berkeley/ San Francisco, I find it really pathetic. Also, the myth that the Warriors have such a devoted fan base is a joke. They give those tickets away. Go to Supercuts and get half off your tickets with your $10 haircut. And not bandwagoners? Remember when everyone was wearing a We Believe shirt? Mercifully those are now an endangered species.

So basically people who say "nocal" instead of "norcal" is george bush retarded. I'm going to teach my kids from day one that "stanfurd" is spelled "stanfurd". So when they start engaging with and insulting people from "stanfurd", it won't be intentional.

That's ok, you got the gist of it. Hopefully one day one of your teams experiences some success so you can get over the LA thing (and hopefully that team is Cal).

Do Norcal people hate Socal mainly because of the sports? As a hardcore Rams fan who hated the Niners because they owned us, I never held anything against the entire bay region or the people. But then I was only 12 and had never encountered any Niner fans. Also I was ambivalent about the Raiders even when they won the SB with Marcus Allen. I didn't care when they came down and didn't care when they went back up. Though I'd love for them to come back down now to siphon off the band wagoners from SC.

Ha ha LA jealousy. That's a good one. And yes, the Warriors do have a devoted fan base. Go to a Timberwolves or Nets game and tell me if they have as many enthusiastic, devoted fans there. You can't compare them to teams that have experienced prolonged success. Of course the Warriors have some bandwagon fans, all teams do. That's not the point. The point is that there is an abnormal amount of loyal die hard fans when you compare it to the success (or lack of it) they've had. Everyone on these boards has heard all these arguments before, except they were coming from U$C fans.

Do you have U$C jealousy that you wish you went to school there instead?

I'm skeptical that the term "nocal" is a consensus derogatory term except for those bay area people who have a quick trigger to call out the socal/norcal regional rivalry. A rivalry that to most is nonexistent.
