...However, a more likely explanation came from a letter Walter Johnson, a former athletic director, wrote to an English professor in Virginia. Johnson wrote, "I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings."

Years after that, the word "Stocking" evolved into "the Hose," especially in newspaper headlines and the student body adopted it in the 1950s.

Hey, maybe Cal Football can convince Uncle Phil at Nike to create some Yale Blue socks for the Bears to wear for this momentous occasion. Maybe throw in some Yale Blue cleats too.

By doing so we might be able to generate a SportsCenter and/or College Football Final highlight out this otherwise meaningless FBS/FCS matchup.

I know Allen's fake pass TD run against Davis made SportsCenter Top 10.

I'm looking forward to the Allen highlight reel cracking the tape again.

You said 20,000. I said 40,000. The winner is whoever is closest.

What's the bet?

Well, let's be clear - you stated over 40,000. I was trying to be fair in that regard because by whoever is closest - I have a better chance of winning the bet b/c if it didn't go over 40k - even if it was 39k - I would win. That's why I thought of an over under - but the over/under can be 40k if you want.

How bout this - if its 10k +/- 20,000 - I win. If its over 40k - you win. I dunno - thoughts?

I'd be willing to go with $50 but can be persuaded to go higher if you have better terms.

Be careful. Don't break your ankle back pedaling from your "lucky to get 20,000" statement.

You said "lucky to get 20k" and gmp said "over 40k". you should firm up your estimate and each bet $50 and if the actual total is, say, between 22k and 40k you both lose and $100 goes to the Cal AD.

You said lucky to get 20,000 and I'll definitely bet on over 40,000.

But if its 39,000 and you want to take the winnings by being over 19,000 off compared to 1,000 .... uhhhhhhhhhhh?

Again - I was just trying to be fair to grandmasta. If the attendance was 39,999 - by his assertion of "over 40,000" - he would lose.

But I'm willing to play it anyway you want. But I like the way your bet is bearywhite. I'll take that if grandmasta is up for it.

Here's the bet.

You essentially said 20,000. You said "lucky to get 20,000" which means you think 20,000 is about the high of your estimate. I said over 40,000. So we'll call it 40,001. We'll meet halfway and call the threshold 30,001. You get the benefit of the 1.

If the attendance is over 30,001, I win. If it's 30,001 or below, you win.

We each put up $50, and the winner gets the entire $100 donated to Cal Athletics in his name.

Deal?

Respect for Presbyterian.

Is it possible that no one wanted to play down to Mr. Tedford, and this is the best he could do?

way to walk back your 'over 40k' statement

frankly I think there's no worry, we'll sell out most games next year. the washington game this year, 44k attendance, was the first time in 40+ games that we hadn't broken 50k. add in the novelty of seeing football games in pacbell park and all the publicity and we'll easily have over 40k.

Yah, I thought the same. Wasn't our year at AT&T supposed to be a big marketing opportunity for Cal football, playing in a high-profile (thanks to the Giants championship) stadium in SF?

Now all of a sudden this is a "weird transition year" that nobody will remember so it's OK to have the AT&T schedule start with an embarrassing game against Presbyterian College?

I just feel like it's a stinker any way you slice it, but at the same time, the show will go on for Cal football (and it's also inspiring and cool that Presbyterian seems "up" for the challenge).

When there's a delta this wide, I'm not sure how else to handle it. I think the best solution is that either way, Cal Athletics gets $100, and whoever was closest gets the money in their name.

When is the last time Cal played a school with an enrollment as small as 1300 in football?

They really be small. Mr. Tedford had best be careful.

If we're going to play a "probably less competitive" team like this, I would prefer one from the Southland conference (like Texas State or Sam Houston), especially given our interest is recruiting in ths area. These teams are often decent.
