I thought this was a joke for a second. Is a 'blue hose' like a garden hose painted blue?

The reason we didn't go to religious schools?

If this is for one year because of a host of reasons, does it really matter?

I understand that paying money for it at regular prices sucks some. A few weeks after the game, and probably it will be completely forgotten as the talk will be of the Pac 12 games.

Then in the future the team moves back home and the scheduling problems will be over.

The outrage seems like people just need to have some drama in their lives. Have some perspective before you freak out using words like: "outrage" "idiots" etc... You are being drama queens.

Indeed. Like the perspective that we are playing Ohio State and Texas as out-of-conference opponents in coming years. I think that more than balances out any perceived weakness in scheduling an FCS school (which plenty of I-A teams do anyway) that we're not very familiar with but is probably on par with any local FCS school. Sheesh.

Didn't PBH play Wake Forest and Clemson recently?

I'm sure that the outrage at that scheduling rang all the way over to the west coast. Or did none of you guys care?

Well, unlike Cal (in a short while), they at least have a baseball team.

Good point. When PC is out here for the game at AT&T Park, Sandy Barbour should sit down with their athletic director and ask him how he manages his athletic department well enough to afford a baseball team.

Or if she doesn't want to wait that long, she can just submit a question via the "Ask The AD" page on Presbyterian's athletic department website.

We join the ranks of Wake Forrest and Clemson, who both racked up easy wins against the John Calvin lads. [53-13 and 58-21] last year. 2 of the relatively few wins for these two big conference teams.

Or maybe you and the other 20 or so folks that regularly attend Cal baseball games can ask...

for student tuition, where Cal and most division one schools view I/A as a profit center. I hope not lost in the conversation is that Cal I/A (well, football and basketball actually) independently funds (subject to a $5 million subsidy) approimately 5 to 10% of the tuition for Cal students. You can't compare funding on division one schools compared to schools in other divisions. For that matter, forget the Ivies as well, where the endowment pays for tuition for all kids that are not from rich families, regardless of whether they play intercollegiate sports. End of sermon.

Stop being reasonable, fer chrissakes! When people want to throw hateful rants into other threads, they should be allowed to do so; otherwise they'll need to up their meds.

Being that our team currently doesn't have a starting QB, I'm okay with it. And an FCS team is an FCS team as far as I'm concerned. Beat em, put up some stats, get the underclassmen some time, pay them and get out. This is goign to be a strange enough season without a monster OOC scedule.

Deutsch,
I think that you might have been more accurate to say "the John Knox lads". At any rate, I understand the scheduling dilemma, and if Cal had to play a D1AA team to fill its schedule, and and the western schools were booked up, why not go east?
AunBear89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Right - we are replacing them with the Ohio States and Texases.

See - the funny thing about scheduling - the other team has to want to play the game as well. Sandy can't just pick up the phone, call the Auburn AD, and tell him "You are playing us on this date at this time in our house. See you then." <click>

The gaps in the current and future schedules are the result of previously scheduled schools deciding the do not want to play us. When this happens so late in the game you take what you can get - most schools have their schedules set for the next few years. And of those few that do not, you have to find one with the same open date, and then both sides have to agree to the venue and to future return dates. It is not as easy as just saying "How about Georgia Tech - they're cool?!"

Not sure why you see this as some sort of plot by Sandy and JT to further degrade our program - oh, wait - I am sure why...

not sure how playing presbyterian will help the development of the team. i'd rather us practice for an extra week. we might as well have 11 games.

I think my point of view is financial. I mean - how much are we paying this school? And does anyone really expect Cal fans to turn out for this game, let alone the casual fan? We'll be lucky to get 20,000 people into AT&T Park.

People don't come to games for easy wins, they come to see their team against an opponent that is quality - or at the very least - has some sort of connection with the area or home team (UC Davis).

I mean - fine - I understand why we are scheduling a team like this. I get it. We'll take the win. But there really is no upside to it, we give money away to the team and we lose money at the gate. Oh well.

Bandwagon fans will have no interest in watching us beat up PBH.

However, true blue golden bears will be salivating at the thought of watching our Bears beat up on a team on a glorious saturday afternoon in San Francisco @ ATT Park. I assure you that there will be more than 20,000 people there.

I'm not going to belittle the Presbyterian football program by saying they aren't worthy. Hopefully, it'll be a good experience for their team and a nice road trip to the Bay Area for their fans.

However, that said, this is what happens when you schedule opponents using a dart board and a blindfold.

No gambling. There will be no pre-game coin toss. Instead, the DL coaches will arm wrestle at mid-field to determine who kicks off.

Crickets and tumbleweed over there (a couple of posts in one thread). It looks like they couldn't care less they've added Cal specifically to their schedule. That opponent section at AT&T Park will be a vast desert of empty seats.

so, maybe that's the problem-the successful programs have fans turn out no matter who they are playing...and though I was a poli sci major back a long time ago, I do know that increases revenue!
I may have learned I don't always agree with you Drunkoski, but I also know that you have some idea about football. You are way above equating a practice with a team that will be coming out and trying to play hard and not be embarrassed....

Quote:

While sideline bleachers will be added in the baseball outfield, fewer Cal fans will be able to attend games. Memorial Stadium holds about 71,700, while the football capacity for the 2011 campaign will be just over 45,000. Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour believes the school will be able to accommodate its approximately 38,000 season ticketholders.
