Looks like Cal found its FCS opponent to finalize the schedule. Presbyterian finished 2-9 in the Big South of the FCS conference last season.

I thought this was a joke for a second. Is a 'blue hose' like a garden hose painted blue?

When I first read it, I thought it was a joke too. Not really sure what their mascot is. Looks like our schedule isn't A-B-C, it's B-B-D.

No offense to Presbyterian, but could this be Cal's worst opponent ever?

WTF?

Well, that's what happens when you wait too long, I guess.

Remember our thread on "which FCS foe you'd prefer?" I thought someone said these obscure FCS teams from across the country were unlikely to be able to afford a trip to CA?

Oh well, hope we don't get made fun of too much for this and can get an easy win. But man, that's an uninspiring home opener for the AT&T Park schedule, to say the least. Good tickets will be available for awhile.

it's a Mel Gibson painted blue, apparently.

According to the team's media guide, "A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose."

Despite the definition, many people have debated as to why Presbyterian College chose this name to represent the school.

According to Ray Frank's book "What's in a Nickname," the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in early America.

Another story in his book said a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish called the Hose painted their bodies blue prior to battles.

However, a more likely explanation came from a letter Walter Johnson, a former athletic director, wrote to an English professor in Virginia. Johnson wrote, "I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings."

Years after that, the word "Stocking" evolved into "the Hose," especially in newspaper headlines and the student body adopted it in the 1950s.

When is the last time Cal played a school with an enrollment as small as 1300 in football?

Well, unlike Cal (in a short while), they at least have a baseball team.

Thee big Blue Hose played Wake, Clemson and Citadel in their first 3 games in 2010. The Hose is the team of the future, here today!

Auburn probably thought their weak schedule in 2004 was a great idea too

this game should have been a nationally televised game against TCU..the school needs the money more than a win against inferior competition (and all the negative publicity that cowardice brings with it)

Yeah, we're way too much like those cowards in Oregon, who scheduled 2-9 Portland State and 1-11 New Mexico last season. And look at how they were struck down in 2010!

We have to have another home game. TCU would not play us at home unless we gave them 2 games at TCU in the future, and that would include canceling our series with Ohio State, because the dates conflict.

But keep tossing potshots from the safety of your bunker.

To quote John McEnroe: "You can NOT be SERIOUS!!!"

WTF is this?? Were the Little Sisters of the Poor and Blind already booked?

Absolute joke to schedule a team of this caliber.

Their mascot is "Scotty the Scotsman," who was introduced to the Blue Hose Nation just last month.

and really, who cares? We needed a patsy. Is this all that different from Portland State or Sac State or Davis in terms of difficulty?

sure that strategy works well as long as their are only 2 unbeaten BCS conference teams...if the BigTEN or Big12 had also produced undefeated teams at year end Oregon's lack of overall schedule strength would have been an issue where they could have found themselves on the wrong side of the issue....consider whether you think they would have gone ahead of an unbeaten tOSU team (also with a mediocre schedule, but with the advantage of beating Oregon in Rose the year before and legions of fans)

scheduling weak just means less fan interest in the games and it says alot about the core values of the program......it can be about competing against the best, or it can be about winning....clearly there is more interest in winning

i would personally rather see competitive games and better opponents...esp for home games

I'm with ya boredom...it's a one year deal due to SAHPC and CMS construction and won't happen again.....if we drink rot gut, eat fried meat on a stick and yank out half our brain we can pretend to be an SEC team for the day...oh, I'll have to call and see if my sister or first cousin can come with me and spend the night...that should tie up all the loose ends.

Again, this isn't the normal C game...I can't believe some of you are going on about Cal ethics and core values and crap....this year is NOT an ordinary year with all that is going on....... CHILL THE PHUCK OUT CLETUS !!!!

TCU is in no position to demand a 2:1 arrangement from anyone.

As far as I know, TCU wanted a "neutral" game in Dallas, with no return date. Don't know what the gain is there for Cal.

...many teams want to play them. They just moved up.
A sure win, and usually you get one of those on any schedule.

This year, I'm fine with it. With all the schedule/stadium issues, Cal needs a week where they get a bye, and a win.
And as another poster noted, Oregon layed NM (1-10) and Portland State last year...nobody remembers because they won the important games....

the only reason no one in Oregon remembers those two games is that tOSU lost to Wisky and there was no other unbeaten BCS conf team at year end. Those two weak opponents could just as easily have been Oregon's version of Auburn in 2004.

look i understand why these weak teams get scheduled; i dont like it and never will. i'm only 1 fan out of many. if you are in favor of scheduling easy wins send the AD a thank you card and a donation....i'd rather risk a loss against a better team and i dont care what Oregon or every other chump school does

there are seriously people upset with this because of the implications it might have if we go undefeated? That's like being concerned that the Warriors' lack of backcourt depth will hurt them in the NBA Finals.

The alternative would have been Portland State..and that was never a sure thing. It is what it is this year.
The CMS renovation has it's negatives. It will be good in 2012, and better in 2013.
...(And I've already thanked her for many other things, and I have already sent in my donation. No need to call me out on that one.)
