Ussully stay at my sisters in Marin then drive to Mem from there. However, the weekend of the Cal/Bulldogs game at the stick, the sis and husband are out of town and it seems dumb to drive from SoCal to Marin then back to Candlestick for the game. Also, we may fly up to SFO rather than drive.

book one of the airport hotels. The Crowne Plaza SFO is in Burlingame near the south end of the airport (you can see planes take off and land from Bayside Park nearby). It's also convenient to US 101.

I remember the Crowne Plaza because every June for about 5 or 6 years we made an annual trip to Bayside Park to watch our kids play in a baseball tournament. I'm going to miss the trips to Burlingame.

I always like more space so I've stayed in the Embassy Suites in So. SF.. it is right off the 101 between the Airport and Candlestick.... shuttle to SFO is excellent and it is reasonably priced....free drinks at 4 pm isn't bad either...LOL

There is a Burlingame one and a So SF one....the So SF is cheaper but just as nice..

Are you renting a car? If so, I'd stay away from downtown SF and find a place with free parking. If you have season tickets at AT&T, there will be 5 more chances to explore and stay in downtown SF if that's what you want to do. As DD, says, get an airport hotel. All the big chains have extremely cheap rates for even their nicest hotels (hyatt, marriott, westin) on the weekends. Though the nicer the hotel the higher chance you'll have to pay for things like internet and parking.

A 49er fan might have better advice here - but I'm not too impressed with the public transit options to the stadium. Cal train stops near visitacion valley and muni goes right through bayview. That might be OK because there appear to be shuttles from these stops for 49ers games, but who knows how crowded they get? there might be an easy way to get to candlestick without a car from the airport hotels, you'd likely have to find a hotel near the south san francisco or milbrae stop and walk to it. But no car means eating crappy hotel food most likely. the embassy suites that cal_fan2 recommends looks like an easy walk to caltrain, as would be the fairfield inn milbrae. Also, if it's a night game, caltrain might not have very frequent service.

I'll second this - used to work right near there, and it was a nice stop on the way home for ..... libations. Never stayed there, though.

There are a number of other places, too, right along Gateway. Hilton Garden Inn, Larkspur Landing, Hampton Inn. And the CalTrain station is a short walk away, and it'll take you right to AT&T

They provide free shuttle to/from SFO every 30 minutes, the BART/Cal Train station is nearby, the hotel rooms are clean and spacious, and there are many restaurants within walking distance.

I attended a luncheon at the Embassy Suites - pleasant enough and within walking distance to the Bay.
Or if you want to save some money there are lots and lots of low priced motels on 3d Street which can rent you a room by the hour!
If you are into that sort of thing.
