Seeing recent posts about SF steak houses led me to think for some of the great ones of my time in the Bay Area (e. g., Ernie's) some or all of which are now gone. This, in turn, led to nostalgia of campus area places I frequented. Some (Kip's, LaVal's) still exist; others (Wilkinson's, Larry Blake's) are no more. A few I can't even remember the names of such as: 1) a hot dog joint (not Top Dog) on Durant in, I think, the same block (across the street) as the Durant Hotel; 2) a hamburger place on Telegraph (maybe College) that had a red/white color scheme, part of a small chain I believe; 3) a hole in the wall hamburger place on Bancroft where I had my first chili size (Wilson's?). Anybody remember these places and/or know what became of them?

Does Tommys Joynt in San Francisco count? It seems like everytime I went there I woke up the next morning with no memory-drunk, sick and possibly covered with blood.

!/4 Pound Burger.... back in the 70s and 80s

This was the best greasy, sloppy burger on drunk Friday or Saturday nights.. they used to be all over Oakland but I think the only one left is the Hayward one on Mission though I've heard there are others....nothing like mayo dripping down your face....these were the total BOMB with or without the munchies....

I ate some Smokehouse Monday night.

I don't know why I go there, perhaps because it's convenient.

The food isn't that great. Except the fries.

I first stepped foot in Berkeley 15 years ago this week, for Calso.

During my first semester, I remember there was this hamburger/ice cream place in the Durant Food Court that in the spot that is now home to that Italian restaurant.

Anybody remember?

Is the one on MacArthur near Fruitvale gone? How about the one on MacArthur near High St? They were there a few years back, as I recall.
I was totally disappointed when the one on Grand closed (many years ago).

When I was 12, I used to hang out at a local playground which would be manned by male and female directors. Well, one day, somebody bet the male director that he couldn't eat a quarter pounder with the works in two bites. All I remember is he gobbled down about 40% of the burger in his first bite. This left the daunting task of stuffing down the remaining 60% with his last bite. Needless to say, it wasn't a pretty sight.

One on Macarthur off Fruitvale is still there - looks like that's the one in the pic.

Kwik Way aint too shabby...atmosphere to die for...

I think you're right....I didn't look real closely. I thought it was the one in Hayward. Come to think of it, the one in Hayward is on Mission near the Plunge, so this isn't the Hayward one. :p

I believe so...here is a pic of the Hayward one near the Plunge..it is a bit bigger, We always ordered from the outdoor window..don't think I've even been on the inside of one.....yes, the Grand Ave one and another on MacArthur were frequent stops....

Dude. I never went there when at Cal, but after Cal, I was in Dental School in the city and we would always go there and get blasted after finals.

Not a food place. Remember Spats on Shattuck. Used to go in there just to order the Borneo Fogcutter. If a lot of people had it, your table was in a shroud of drunken fog!!!!!!!!!

Nib's on San Pablo in El Cerrito. Nibs Price place, home of the "Nibs-burger". No fries and no mumbo jumbo...just hickory grilled burgers and fresh baked pie. I haven't been there in over a decade...after the ownership changed.

I got two from childhood(the 60's): Foster's Freeze in Alameda near the beach, my dad would take me and my brother there, would get the jumbo cone($0.39) and fries. The other was KwikWay on 62nd Ave. & E.14th St(now International Blvd) in Oakland, chicken in the box with extra fries!

Im on Bay farm in Alameda. That Foster Freeze ( Encinal & Webster ) is still there.

I live two blocks from the fosters freeze and its most definitely still there although I swear it has to be a drug front now because I haven't seen a customer there in years. It changed owners and isn't good anymore.

The one near High Street is still open, too.

...but does anyone remember McCallum's on Solano...incredible ice cream and they had some concoction called a Dream or was it the Nightmare that if you could eat it all yourself it was free and they put your pic up...seems to me the football guys were always going there also. Memory fades........................

The Depot on University -- had dinner there after my last final. Bar was populated by "regulars" aka old guys drinking cheap scotch

Late 70's. Combo plate for $2.49. Cured many a hangover.

Also Dream Fluff Donuts on Ashby. Driving home from McNalleys at 2:15, knocking on the window, and getting hot donuts with a heat on.

I forgot how Nation's tastes like. It's been about a decade since I've been there, but used to live next to the one in El Cerrito and I'd visit there at all hours of the night (I was a Cal student then).

Hunger Pang...eww...even with low Unit 1 sanitary standards, I couldn't bring myself to eat there. Especially when Japanese Snacks was right there with the Yakitori Bowl. That was a great Saturday evening meal. Have to give a shout out to King Pin for drunk donuts after Manny's...
