In 1991---in light of bryce treggs (brian's team), why didn't we go to the rose bowl that year, did we not have the same rules???

We were #2 in the pac-10 and washington went to the nat championship...

someone explain

WA went to the Rose Bowl, there was no BCS.
They were voted co-nat'l champs w/ Miami IIRC.

EDIT: Best game in my lifetime at Memorial that Cal didn't win. Epic battle, down to the wire. Team left the field in defeat to a standing O. Went on to crush Clemson in Citrus Bowl, where BTreggsI was THE MAN. Too bad what happened that offseason ruined our momentum, or Cal's recent history would be a lot different IMO.

Agree OldBlue1999

That was a fantastic game. Worst part was right after the 59 yard Chapman TD to tie it at 17, Washington struck back with a Beno Bryant 65 yard TD run on almost the exact play - run up the gut vs. a blitz....

Brian Treggs could not pull in Pawlawski's 20 yard pass on the final play of the game... :-(

I agree completely OB1999. I was at that game as well and it was SO exciting, heartbreaking and inspiring. Glad I witnessed such an amazing contest in person.

While I thoroughly enjoyed that week in Orlando, Disney World, and the W at the Citrus Bowl against Clemson .... I will always remember how close Cal came to the RB. It was the greatest season for Cal in the last 25 or so years (probably longer).

That fateful game against Udubb ... Dawkins was injured at the end of that game so the pass was obviously going to Treggs ... and everyone in the world knew it.

The massive Oakland Hills fire (not far from Memorial was actually starting during that afternoon ... and blew huge the next day

We really need to get another awesome season and New Year's (or after) bowl game to etch into our collective hearts and memories

Because we always get screwed. Yes, I know about no BCS. But why do our best teams per last previous decades (1991 and 2004) have to be awesome when you have a national champion in the conference? Those two Cal teams, in any other year, are going to the Rose Bowl going away. Meanwhile, Furd goes to the 2000 Rose Bowl after losing to Texas 69-17. Texas was 9-5 that year, folks. Furd has to go up against teams led by Holmoe and Hackett in the conference. Such is Cal.

I guess they have their 1999, we have our 2009-2010 men's basketball, LOL.

Best Cal game I have ever been to (excepting '82, but that is in a category all by itself). Slightly beating out the '07 Tennessee win, which left me hoarse for days.

That Washington team was unbelievable.

Fantastic game . . . but that last pass was to Mike Caldwell (and might have been a tiny bit high).

If it takes most of the Pac-12 either being on probation or relegated to weak sister status for Cal to get to the RB, I'll friggin take it at this point.

You sure? I distinctly remember the guy standing next to me going, "why throw to Treggs, why not Dawkins?" We didn't know Dawkins was dinged up and we didn't have the best vantage point of the pass from the student section way up.

Dude I'll take us having to beat Mills College to qualify for the RB if that's what it'll take.

It appears there was a discussion on this board a little over a year ago on this question, with no definitive answer.

According to this article from the Chicago Tribune, the pass was thrown to Treggs.

Napolean Kauffman was their third-string running back.

Steve Entman was their nose tackle.

Mark Brunnell at QB with Billy Joe Hobert as the backup.

Sick.

Okay. Curiosity made me go look it up.
Found the following in the Chicago Tribune! :

Pawlawski looked to Brian Treggs on a corner pattern, and Treggs appeared to have cornerback Walter Bailey beaten.

But Bailey recovered quickly, and the ball sailed past Treggs. There would be no miracles.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1991-10-20/sports/9104040945_1_cal-coach-bruce-snyder-cal-quarterback-mike-pawlawski-washington-end-zone

I seem to remember that Snyder said he would have gone for 2 had Treggs pulled it in....

Reminds me of the 1993 Cal-Oregon 30 pt comeback where Gilbertson went for two....
Barr to Caldwell for the eventual winning score 42-41 (Oregon had enough time for one final drive)...

Down 30-7, saw a lot of folks leave at halftime and I was yelling that Cal could still win... Lots of incredulous looks.... :-)

I still remember thinking that Oregon had not really outplayed Cal in the first half - mostly scoring on lots of "trick" and long-gainer plays... I seem to remember a fake punt going for a first down....

That is my favorite in-person game at Memorial outside of beating Stanford. The 1991 shellacking of USC is a close second. The headlines in the SF Chron the next day screamed "Big Bad Cal Mauls Poor USC; Bears Slaughter Trojans 52-30"

As I recall it, the penultimate pass was to Caldwell (oops, it was Binn?) who rose up and was facing Pawlaski and the ball hit his hands in the middle of the end zone. I can see him prone in the air with hands from defenders - there was a crowd - and he just didn't hold on to it. That would have been the last play but I'm pretty sure there was a penalty which set up the failed pass to Treggs - who, if he had caught it, was still several yards shy of the end zone and might not have gotten in. (I guess I can check the video tape I have of the game)

But as great a "loss" that game was, and as amazing a week in Orlando we had - there was that other game in PA that was PU. and the Furdies followed it up by lobbying for them to go the Citrus Bowl.

The article said the pass on the offsetting penalties play was thrown to David Binn, LOL.

But you have to wonder about that when they also said the crowd was yelling "Go Cal!" at the end of the game. Yes, all 75K of us were yelling "Go Cal Go Cal!" one of our go-to cheers, apparently.

That 1993 Oregon game was one of the greatest college football comebacks ever. Dave Barr is my favorite Cal QB ever. So calm, cool and collected in the pocket. This is another year we would have gone to the RB but for some fateful circumstance (Barr and Zomalt both going down in a game where we had UW 24-3 late in the 3rd quarter). *SIGH*

I still think there was serious intent to injure Barr on that play.... The wounded duck pass proved he couldn't go on... Got to give Ziv Gottlieb (it was Ziv who relieved?) all sorts of credit though....

AND Deltha O'neal dropped the game-sealing interception - took his eyes off the ball to see if he could get a TD Return ... :headbang

Washington went on to score the winning TD....

I was at the game and still feel heartbroken about it. It ranks with the 2004 USC game for bitter losses.

It was a beautiful day, one of the best and loudest Memorial Stadium crowds, and even an awesome halftime show. If we had scored a touchdown in that last drive, Coach Snyder said he would have went for two for the win.

Kerri McGonigal took over. I don't think he won us a game after that. It took Barr and Zomalt coming back in the Arizona game where we got our next win.

Of course, they also had 2 great tight ends on that roster in Aaron Pierce and Mark Bruener. Both played in the NFL and Bruener, who backed up Pierce in 1991, was a pretty good NFL player.

Yeah, Ziv (wearing #81) came in in 1994 after a series of QB injuries...
What I meant was that the QB did not single-handedly lose us the 1993 ballgame. He spent a good amount of time running for his life but we were still leading until the ignominious final 4 minutes....

But I vividly remember him dropping a sure interception to ice a game against Washington.....

Not quite. Billy Joe Hobert was the starter. Mark was projected the starter but was hurt before the start of the season.
