Prediction for this year?

Cal is a wildcard type team. Lots of questions, no known answers. Questions about virtually every unit on the team. The Defense looks good on paper, but despite last seasons overall ranking they had 4 very poor games.

I am hopeful about the offense. There are some players on that side of the ball. OL play and QB will be critical. I believe there is depth at RB and talent though unproven. The Bears have a guy in Keenan Allen that can be a star. If he becomes one this year it will be a big help to the teams fortunes. I believe the OL will be better. Maynard has some talent, but inexperience often results in mistakes and turnovers. Cal will be playing an inexperienced QB this season regardless, so I like his combo of passing skills and athletic ability. He could really surprise, if he does the Bears will be a tough opponent.

The conference is a little overrated IMO. I get how UO and Furd are strongly rated but both regress a little this season IMO. By seasons end a year those 2 were in the top 4 and Stanford was the conferences best by Jan. Both should be good, but both have a couple of questions.

ASU is getting way more love than they deserve IMO. Yes there are some good players in Tempe but they have been an underachieving group and I will need to see improvement before I put them into the conference title game. UW, OSU and Cal could all end 3rd through 5th. If UW gets good QB play from Price they could end up 3rd, but he is as much a questionmark as Maynard IMO. OSU lost Quizz and that will hurt a team that underperfomed a season ago. They have played Cal great over the years, but played poorly down the stretch last season.

IMO the conference is a questionmark. Every team, even the stronger ones have some questions. Cal has enough athletes to surprise, but enough inexperience at key spots to lose a game their talent suggests they should win. A strong start is essential IMO. They need to beat both FSU and Colorado. Those are games where they have a talent edge and need to win as the team gels. Presbeterian is a gimme so the Bears could be 3-0 going to UW. These games hold the key to a winning season IMO. FSU, Colorado, UW, Utah, OSU, UCLA and ASU. I am counting Presbeterian and WSU as wins so the Bears need a 4-3 record vs those other teams to get to 6-6. It is doable, but the team really needs to start fast. They open with winnable games.

6-6 is what I see, but a couple of games better or worse is certainly possible.

Utah doesn't have to play Stanford or Oregon, and 5 of their 9 pac-12 games are at home. ASU, UCLA, OSU and Washington will have to adjust to the altitude. Their schedule is about as favorable as they could hope for in their first Pac-12 season. @USC and @Cal could be their toughest conference games.

$C isn't post season eligible, right? ASU has to play at Oregon. Utah could be the favorite in the Pac-12 South.

Right, Utah has a very favorable schedule so they should have a good won-loss record. That said, we should beat them at home this year and their trip to Washington State late this year is a classic trap game for them right after they host an L.A. school for the first time in conference. I think they'll lose at the Pallouse (or is that the first time I've ever used my North Division homer goggles?).

Pasadena !

Figured I'd use the karma of the 1,000th post to wish the bears to the 12-pac title.

I say 6-6, but it could be the other way around.

Cal had a big play offense in the Marshawn, Desean, Jahvid years. We didn't have a great O-line or QB, so we couldn't control the ball and march up and down the field much. Still, when we got the big plays for touchdowns and forced turnovers we generally won against top teams, like Tennessee and Oregon.

Last year Shane and Keenan showed flashes, but weren't quite explosive enough and teams were able to focus on containing them. With Allen, Jones, Isi and Bigelow we have better big play potential between them all this year and containing three of them at once should be very tough.

It's been awhile since we could win games against the best conference teams with ball control. Aaron Rodgers could do it at and we had some pretty strong O-lines years ago. Having a dual threat quarterback should help us keep drives alive with 3rd down scrambles, and the defense should be among the best in the conference (and thus the country).

I'll go 9-3 with my prediction. We have enough big-play potential to get lucky and beat one of the teams that should be better than us: USC/Oregon/Furd. But we'll probably also get unlucky (or screwed by the refs) in one of the games where we're probably a little better than a tough opponent on the road: @ASU, @Washington, @UCLA. I'll hope that we're good enough that the rest of the games won't ever be in doubt.

That would be incredible in that with a PAC 12
championship and a bcs bowl game, we would have to play 14 games. Andilise, I will give you 10000 to 1 odds on 13-0.

Yes. Good point. But we must first be 13-0 before we can be 14-0!
It just got even better!

10000 to 1?

Vegas is at +9500 (win $9500 on a $100 bet, or 95:1) for Cal winning the 2011-12 BCS Championship.

Take a $10 bet?

When I was 14 my fanatical San Diego Chargers uncle accepted terms I'd laid out:
"There is no way Chargers can beat the Raiders Sunday.. NO WAY! In fact, if that happens I'll pay you $100, and if it don't you only owe me a box of jelly donuts."

Weelll, considering that the game was on Monday Night Football, figured I'd scored slam dunk trickeration.

Except not only didn't I get any donuts from him, he wouldn't even come back to our house for the next 6 months. Mom & Dad were really p*ssed!

RIP Uncle Thomas.

I mostly agree with YLS Bear, except I think we will beat OSU and lose to Utah.

Sep 3 Fresno State W
Sep 10 Colorado * W
Sep 17 Presbyterian W
Sep 24 @Washington L
Oct 1 BYE
Oct 6 @Oregon L
Oct 13 U$C L
Oct 22 Utah L
Oct 29 @UCLA W
Nov 5 WSU W
Nov 12 OSU W
Nov 19 @Stanford L
Nov 25 @ASU L

I also predict that we will win one game that we are supposed to lose, and lose one game that we are supposed to win. I also predict that we will lose our bowl game because without USC in the post-season, bubble teams will be pushed up into tougher PAC-12 tie-in bowl games.

Final record 6-7

10000 to 1 was for Cal to end with a 13-0 record which is impossible unless something miraculous/catastrophic happens in that we happen to not play one of our games and win all other games. Regular season = 12 games + PAC championship + BCS = 14 games. If you want to bet a final record of 13-0 including winning the bcs championship in the record then you have a bet

Seymore, that's a lot to ask out of this team. I mean Giorgio missing no field goals? Never??
Easy. Giorgio, warming up for the Fresno State game, is a late scratch. After the game we learn that he tore his hamstring and is out for the year.

(This may sound familiar...)

You guys can't fool me! I know all you guys really want Cal to be the number one over-rated team for the sixth year in a row.
